so how do you fix it??? any ideas?
I too am having this problem. This is ridiculous as it means I will have to write down the tracks I am listening to in shuffle mode so that I can delete them later.
This is occurring on a brand new iPod touch 2G, software version 2.1.1.

Here's a bothersome workaround for addressing this issue:
1) With the iPod touch connected to your computer, go to iTunes and create a smart playlist on the device comprised of recently played tracks (something like "Last Played" "is in the last" 2 "weeks").
2) Disconnect the iPod, and play some music.
3) When you are finished playing music untethered and are ready to reconnect the iPod to your computer, create a new On-The-Go playlist, navigate to your recently played tracks playlist (created in step 1), and manually add the songs listed in that playlist which you just listened to.
4) Reconnect the iPod. In iTunes, select all the tracks in your recently created On-The-Go playlist and advance the play count using Add or Subtract Play Count AppleScript ( http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=addorsubtractplaycount).

According to the Apple technical support employee I just spoke with, this is a known issue for an iPod touch set to manually manage music. An official response from Apple about fixing this in a future software update would be welcome.
I was told this was a known issue, and that the fix is to first try to reset all settings (on the iPod via Settings > General > Reset All Settings), and if that does not work do a complete restore of the iPod (in iTunes computer application).
Upon performing a complete restore of the iPod touch, play count began working once more for me. I just hope this extreme measure doesn't have to be performed on a regular basis.

I've confirmed that this issue is still not resolved with iPod touch software 2.2.
ya i have the new update for the ipod touch and it still dosnt work.... bummer
I have what may be another workaround, or perhaps not. I'm still testing it out.
Just before you reconnect your iPod to computer, jump to the previous track just listened to, rate it one star, then advance back to the track currently being listened to, pause, then connect.
It may be voodoo, but it seems to work most of the time. As a backup, I always add my currently listened to tracks to an On-The-Go playlist just before connecting, as I still frequently find that the list of tracks just listened to gets wiped upon connecting.
Please, Apple, fix this issue. This has been going on far too long. All issues related to music playback should be the first things fixed in the next iPod update, I can wait for copy and paste and other fixits.

After installing the 2.2.1 update, this workaround does not work. The problem covered in this thread still exists in the 2.2.1 update.
I'm eagerly awaiting another update to fix the issue.

Another workaround for this issue is to connect the iPod, perform a sync, wait until sync is finished, eject iPod, reconnect iPod, perform another sync. I'm pretty certain this isn't a foolproof workaround.
How do you check your play count on the ipod touch? I have been looking around on it and I can't even find those kind of stats such as most played and such.
Play count is a sort of metadata that doesn't have a direct display implementation on the iPod (well it isn't data that is actually saved to the file, but instead stored as a preference in the library database ). It's there, you just can't see it! The exception is if you use smart playlists (see my comment below), where you can use logic to sort tracks by play count into distinct playlists.
With your iPod connected to your computer, playing in iTunes, you can choose to display play count in your track listing. Select View > View Options…, then check the Play Count checkbox.
You can build smart playlists based upon play count and last played, which is a very powerful and handy feature for those who prefer to manually manage their iPod content, allowing you to create dynamic playlists that propagate based on your listening preferences (such as "play only tracks I haven't heard in a while" or "play only newly added tracks I haven't heard yet"). Create a smart playlist in iTunes by holding down the option key and clicking on the create playlist button. This is the solution for new iPod users who complain that their iPod playing in shuffle mode keeps playing the same tracks.
The main problem is that iPod touch does not always properly keep track of play count, something that iPod classic excels at. It's like using a calculator that has an inconsistent math error -- how can you trust it?

I'm running Touch with 2.2.1 via iTunes 8.0.2.20 on a PC (both fully up-to-date as of this posting) and this problem still isn't fixed. My Nano updates the play count just fine so it is probably a Touch firmware problem. That it has taken this long to fix is simply outrageous. It is a BUG and should be fixed by Apple, WITHOUT us having to resort to workarounds.

Has anyone heard from apple about when this bug would get fixed, or even confirming that they acknowledge it's existence?
Does anyone have any other solutions besides wiping my whole ipod (again!) and restoring it?
