Shuffle doesn't play all songs

Hi. I just came back from vaction where I took my ipod shuffle with me. But after listening for a while, my ipod started replaying the same songs while it hadn't played others at all. Tried resetting it and various other click and hold options, but I couldn't get it to play all the songs I loaded on. It must have only played about 60 or so songs. How can I get it to play everything?

Robert: I don't mean to speak for "pbeaudet", but I think you're missing the point. Maybe if we listened to our ipods for 6 hours without a break, we'd hear most of the songs. But in reality no one does this. We listen in half-hour snatches. In my experience (and yes, I've restored and reloaded numerous times) it seems that each time I turn the ipod on/off, it goes back to the beginning of the cycle (which means I'm hearing the same old songs in shuffle mode).

Are you not experiencing this problem? As I said above, I'm finding that triple-clicking the play button seems to reshuffle the songs.

I have seldom had this problem. When i think I am in one of those "loops" i switch to "sequential" mode for three or four songs then back to "shuffle" mode. that usually breaks the pattern. i have also found during long drives in the car that the pattern will break by itself if given enough time. A similar pattern also occurs in shuffle mode in iTunes.

The difficukty in addressing a problem like this is that there are many different things that can cause the problem and it is not possible to look over your shoulder every step of the way. Thus the simple answer gets suggested first. I realize that people who come here already frustrated do not like to hear things like "operator error". 🙂 🙂

So, in no particular order:

1. Make sure the shuffle is restored to factory settings. This means you will asked to rename it.

2. Make sure all the songs will play on the shuffle. Might be possible that it is skipping unplayable songs.

3. If you have sat 30 songs that play over and over, take them off and see if the problem continues with a differentset of songs.

4. Pay attention to how you turn the shuffle on and off. If you hit the pause then turn it off, it should restart where it left off. When you turn it back on you should only have to hit the pause button once, unless it has been off for a while. Then you hit the button a second time AFTER the green light goes out. If you turn the shuffle on and hit the button rapidly you may freeze up or start it back at the beginning.

%. It is possible that the updater software is corrupt. Obtain a new copy and restore with that.

5. Has your shuffle been sitting in a hot/cold car? I have had erratic behavior after that.

6. Set your playcounts to zero and let the shuffle play for 24 hours (you don't have to listent to it :)). See how bad the problem really is.

7. Remember that all computer devices are inhabited by gremlins. be nice to them.
