Macbook Pro won't resume from sleep

Just got my new MBP, and I closed the lid at home, then opened it when I got to work, and it won't turn on. My previous version occasionally had this problem, and repeatedly closing and opening the lid and pressing the power button would remedy it. (It would eventually resume properly.) However on the new one, nothing works. I had to do a hard reset and restart the machine. Anyone know a fix or the cause? Thanks.

This is one of the most problematic of the problems with the new MBP. About 90% of the time when I try to wake the computer from sleep, the machine just doesn't respond. It might be related to bluetooth and/or connecting an external monitor. This machine is fast becoming unusable, since every time it goes to sleep and doesn't wake up, I have to restart the machine by holding down the power button until it reboots, causing me to lose my work.

Well i have also ran into this problem, at first I was quite disappointed because you often here of this with new machines and then later on some upgrade comes along and fixes it. But then i started noticing that the new MBP has a different wakeup procedure then i am used to, it has this bar showing (a lot like the one when you turn your speakers up). Is this something new?
Back to the problem, I could not wake it up from sleep and wonted to hard restart the machine, after holding down the start button for a second or two I could hear the hardisk reacting and the bar showed up and it woke up right after. I am guessing if I had held it down longer it would have shut down but in my case, letting go after i heard the disk kick in worked like a charm.

Mine is actually the opposite. Also frustrating. When I close the lid, it will sleep for about a minute and wake up, when I see the Apple glowing I open the lip, enter the password and it will got back to sleep... then I close the lid and guess what... it's awake again!

I'm at work today, this happened again, so I disconnected everything thinking that it was the USB mouse causing the wake, and it did it again... the lid was already open, so it woke up wanting to know the password, I let it sit there for a while and the screen saver came on after it wanted my frick'n password. The screen started flickering and I stopped it. Then the login screen was displayed behind the login panel and was still flickering the screen saver behind it, I then entered my password.... it wasn't letting my select the field for my password... then it locked up. I waiting and it sat there w/ the spinning beach ball of death.

Ultimately I was forced to do a hard shutdown. This is a normal thing now. For whatever reason I cannot get it to stay asleep when I need it to. It will sleep sometimes though, but it's usually when I don't need it to, and I'm sure my need for it to stay asleep isn't linked to it's actions.

My new MBP has also done this on two occasions. I'm considering returning it - but now I wonder if this is a general problem with the new model. It's really frustrating to have to wait for a new machine, and I have to decide whether to return it in the next 6 days. Decisions, decisions...

I looked in /var/log/system.log, and the machine seems to have been awake, but the screen was completely black. Interestingly, this is one of the last messages after the wake but before I restarted the machine with the power button:

Hi there,

first of all, I'm currently staring at a black screen on my MBP, whilst my external screen, a 23" ACD, works.
Only when I unplug my external screen will my MBP screen turn back on.

At the moment there are about 3 maybe more discussions going on about problems similar to yours.

They all have in commen:

A) computer not working after waking from sleep
B) external display starting to flicker after waking from sleep

I also have one other problem. After waking from sleep, my BT mouse and keyboard don't function and my computer goes back to sleep mode. Does anybody else have this problem.

I'm getting kinda worried that the new MBP's either have a serious GPU driver problem. Or the Hardware is seriously buggy/flawed. Lets hope NVIDIA didn't screw up this one as well, just like they did with the M8600GT.

I have the exact same problem as described in the thread - the computer would not come back from standby. But I think I formed a theory in my case - I think this is related to the Bluetooth devices - as long as I had the mouse and kbd (both a bluetooth devices) connected I was experiencing this "black-screen-on-resume" problem. But this would not happen all the time so there must be another variable in play here. Now I turned off bluetooh services and I see the computer behaving correctly every time.

Is there a system log that I can enable/visualize to try to get a better handle on what is going on? What are the debugging steps one should follow?

Thank you,
Silvian

Any updates on this? I got a new MBP recently and exchanged it because it was sleeping and not waking. I just received my new one and it's doing the same thing. Since I transfered all of my data from the first one to the second one, a Mac Genius told me it was a software thing and that I should do a reinstallation of the OS. Has anyone tried this?

I have the "older" macbook pro and have had this problem since I bought it in late 2007, through all the updates. So its not exclusive to the new hardware. Its BS because Ive done a number of hard resets because of this problem over the course of 2008 and it probably has shortened the lifespan of my product - and I am no further to a solution than I was in January. Please help, Apple!!!
