Macbook Pro won't resume from sleep

Just got my new MBP, and I closed the lid at home, then opened it when I got to work, and it won't turn on. My previous version occasionally had this problem, and repeatedly closing and opening the lid and pressing the power button would remedy it. (It would eventually resume properly.) However on the new one, nothing works. I had to do a hard reset and restart the machine. Anyone know a fix or the cause? Thanks.

I have a twist on this issue, my brand new MacBook Pro has the mysterious habit of restarting without notice. I am typing away and presto restart. I phoned Apple and the first type we reset the PRAM, the next time I phoned I did a clean install of the software and this worked for not even one day and the problems came back. I also have the problem of the sleep being erratic, sometimes it wakes up, other times it doesn't and we get that funny grey screen, that I only saw on my previous MacBook Pro only a few times in 2 1/2 years. Apple has indicated they will send me a new machine as it is within 30 days of purchase. They really need to fix this issue. Has anyone else had the problem with the restart issue?

This sounds like a bad main board or bad memory. No need to try anything else than a new machine (since you've already tried a clean install).

Are you sure you need a hard reset here? I've seen this on a number occasions with my previous MBP (nov 2006 Core 2 version). I think it's related to the fact that I have set the computer to require a password when waking from sleep or screen saver. When I experience this, I can almost always fix it by putting the machine to sleep again (by closing the lid), wait until I'm sure it's sleeping and then open the lid again.

- After waking up with external display (as the only used screen) connected, sometimes there are disturbances everywhere and green sprinkles. Removing external display leads to an errorfree internal display.

My boss has a 13" MB and sometimes sees disturbances on the external display when waking from sleep. It is always fixed by disconnecting and reconnecting the mini display port adapter.

- Sometimes, after waking up, everything stays black.=> hard reset

Which of these issues are known and which only happen to me?

The last issue is what we discuss here. In my case it has happened 3 times over the 3 weeks I've had the new machine, that's too often, but at the same time rare enough for me to be patient and hope that it will be fixed in software.

I have the same issue. Sometimes my MBP wakes up fine from sleep like my Late 2006 MacBook, other times it appears to be waking up from hibernation, with the screen dim and a progress bar at the bottom. Sometimes it doesn't wake up at all and needs to reboot. The wake up from hibernation only happens on my MacBook if the battery goes dead or I swap out the battery. I worry about losing work if I let it fall asleep. This issue is really annoying because the wake up sequence seems to be completely random.

Sure hope Apple gets a fix out soon. Sounds like it is common among the new machines.

I also had the problem that it would not wake when opening the lid, I did a PRAM and NVRAM reset and that problem is gone.

To reset PRAM and NVRAM
Turn on the computer AND press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Hope it helps.

I just experienced this issue too. My first Mac and this is day 1. So not a good first experience Apple.

So far since setting the laptop up today I have run Software Update (twice, so it's fully patched), installed Firefox (and Foxmarks extension), switched to Firefox as default browser. And I setup the trackpad to register taps as button presses (because pressing the trackpad button sounds like I'm banging the chassis with a teaspoon, Apple, really?). I used Firefox to download Entourage (a 240mb download) which completed fine. I left the Macbook Pro for a few minutes and it had gone into sleep mode by the time I returned. The screen lid was still open and it was still plugged into the mains fully charged.

I pressed a key to wake it back up. The CD drive made its clunky noise and the keyboard lit up. So appeared to be on but the screen remained off. Tried closing/reopening the lid but no luck. Had to hold the power button until it hard rebooted.

Booted back up with no issues. So I rebooted it and reset the PRAM. Will see if this issue happens again. Incidentally the macbook pro had gone to sleep two times previously and it woke up fine. I did change the setting to take 15 mins until sleep instead of 10 mins, I think it is. Whether that triggered the issue I don't know. I've done nothing funky. Pretty basic so far.

One more thing to note. It appears it is setup to use the slower graphics chip by default. Both the battery and mains setting are set to "Better Battery Life". I haven't tried changing this yet so at no point has the 9600m GT been used yet. Though I intend to switch eventually and keep it on 9600m GT because I run an OpenGL app alot.

2 more times since I wrote this 😟

The last two times were 5 days ago and today. On both occasions, the machine woke up but seemed to fail to wake up the screen.

When it fails to wake the screen, it always logs something like this in /var/log/system.log:
NVDA::setPowerState(0x7482c00, 0 -> 2) timed out after 76320 ms

Any news on this issue?

I thought I'd add a bit to this thread. I've had the same problem with the Mac not waking from sleep. It exhibits the same problem as everyone describes. When it wakes up I just get a black screen but it sounds as if it has restored itself.

I've tried a couple of things to diagnose the issue and it seems reseting the PRAM gives me some respite for about 3 days then the issues start again. I logged a call with Apple support and they suggested the following until a fix has been released:

1) Use power management to disable computer sleeping after a period of time
2) Some customers have reported disconnecting and reconnecting the external monitor has worked
3) Reset your SMC

So I reset the SMC again and everything was fine for a couple of days. This morning it started the problem again so I tried disconnecting the monitor and reconnecting.. it actually worked. Although I did get a very strange display on the external monitor. It was like looking at a television with no signal for a couple of seconds then the log in prompt appeared.

Originally I thought this was related to waking the laptop from sleep via bluetooth. To discount this I've been using a USB keyboard and mouse for the last couple of days with bluetooth completely turned off unfortunately the error is still present.

I also thought it could have been something to do with the use of secure virtual memory during wake up. Looking at the link below it covers changing sleep modes and checking the current mode you are in. I noticed that when I was using secure virtual memory my sleep mode was on 3 when it should have been 7.

http://www.macworld.com/article/53471/2006/10/sleepmode.html

This didn't help unfortunately so I'm going to be stuck disconnecting and reconnecting my monitor to get access back to my screen whenever this happens. At least I don't have to hard reset anymore and potentially loose the documents I've been working on.

Exactly. If you look in /var/log/system.log, you'll see that the machine has been doing a few things since wakeup, and you may find an entry related to the nvidia driver.

I've tried a couple of things to diagnose the issue and it seems reseting the PRAM gives me some respite for about 3 days then the issues start again.

My problems are less frequent, my last three crashes were on Nov 14th, Dec 2nd and Dec 7th. I tried a PRAM zap after then Dec 2nd crash, can't say that has helped...

1) Use power management to disable computer sleeping after a period of time
2) Some customers have reported disconnecting and reconnecting the external monitor has worked

I don't use an external monitor and I only put the machine to sleep by closing the lid, so this doesn't help at all.

3) Reset your SMC
So I reset the SMC again and everything was fine for a couple of days.

Hmm. I could try resetting the SMC, but I'm not convinced.

To your other points:
I'm not using bluetooth mice or keyboards.
I'm also puzzled that the sleep mode is set to 3 when it should have been 7.
But anyway, given the error messages I find, I'm 99% sure that this bug is related to the machine in some way having trouble with reinitializing the graphics card after wakeup. I've also noticed that sometimes when it works, the screen get immediately to the screensaver login prompt (I've turned on asking for password when waking from sleep), but sometimes it gets blue first, as if the graphics system is doing some kind of full reinitialize.

OT RANT: Is it possible to turn off the stupid control-P shortcut to the preview in this interface? It drives me insane, I always use the emacs shortcuts in cocoa programs, and if I type control-P fast a couple of times, the whole preview thing just hangs and I have to recompose my whole message!
