Macbook Pro won't resume from sleep

Just got my new MBP, and I closed the lid at home, then opened it when I got to work, and it won't turn on. My previous version occasionally had this problem, and repeatedly closing and opening the lid and pressing the power button would remedy it. (It would eventually resume properly.) However on the new one, nothing works. I had to do a hard reset and restart the machine. Anyone know a fix or the cause? Thanks.

My new MBP has also done this on two occasions. I'm considering returning it - but now I wonder if this is a general problem with the new model. It's really frustrating to have to wait for a new machine, and I have to decide whether to return it in the next 6 days. Decisions, decisions...

I decided not to return the machine. I haven't had any more problems over the last week (and now, with the update, even the trackpad is working).

OK I have this problem, exactly the same you shut the lid on it, come to use it agin and you hear the computer sort of kick into action but actually nothing happens screen stays dull and the keyboard stays unlit, this stage you have to hard shut down the computer holding the power button for 7-8 seconds.

I had a look. I had a think, well I went into the system preferences and energy saver and then unchecked (Put hard disk to sleep when possible).

this seems to have not done anything may be others might want to check that out

Unfortunately, for me the same problem sometimes. Waking up, black screen. Computer seems to work though (heard the mail sound) but nothing helps to get the screen showing something.
I cannot track the problem, doesn't seem to be related to bluetooth or USB since I watched some Quicktime movies, bluetooth turned off for maximum batterylife, after reopening the lid, black screen.
Glad I'm not the only one, shame the problem even exists 😟

Add me to the list as well. I have a brand new MBP late 2008 model, 2.53 ghz C2D. I notice that the machine doesn't really go to sleep when I close the lid, but keeps running something that makes it hot, and uses a lot of battery power (obviously, if it gets hot). Only a start-button restart works.

I'm going to phone Apple tomorrow about this, and see what happens.

I have a MacBook 2.4GHz, OS 10.5.5, and I see this issue also.

My current theory points to connections to Windows networks (in my case, Samba running on an Ubuntu server) - if connections are open to network shares, and you close the lid, then the OS behaves very poorly on resume - just had the spinning beachball, no login window, forced reboot.

In the console log, many messages containing kernel[0]: smb iodreconnect: Retrying connection to <myserver>, followed by: PM notification timeout (pid 21, securityd) and (pid 16 mDNSResponder) and (pid 299, loginwindow).

count me in with this problem too. Not always, but often I open the lid and nothing. Just did it again to me which is why I finally logged on here to report it. The keyboard backlight comes on if it's dark, but the screen will not wake up. Putting it back to sleep and trying again makes no difference. A few times the screen actually did wake up for a fraction of a second and I saw my desktop before it switched off.

The only solution seems to be a forced reboot.

I just performed a reset of the SMU and we'll see if that makes any difference, but this seems a very common problem that will probably require an update.

once again

I am drawn to this site after my brand new late 2008 MBP (which has JUST BEEN replaced because of the unbalanced fan issue) exhibits the same nonsense behaviour as all of yours.

COME ON APPLE.

my PC friends laugh when i have to HARD REBOOT....they thought that macs are 'supposedly' known for their rock-solid stability!

this thing has crashed on me 4 times (with all the updates)

and my previous BRAND NEW mbp crashed on me over a dozen

over a span of a month

windows xp in comparison would crash about once every 3 months.

arg.....

I have a twist on this issue, my brand new MacBook Pro has the mysterious habit of restarting without notice. I am typing away and presto restart. I phoned Apple and the first type we reset the PRAM, the next time I phoned I did a clean install of the software and this worked for not even one day and the problems came back. I also have the problem of the sleep being erratic, sometimes it wakes up, other times it doesn't and we get that funny grey screen, that I only saw on my previous MacBook Pro only a few times in 2 1/2 years. Apple has indicated they will send me a new machine as it is within 30 days of purchase. They really need to fix this issue. Has anyone else had the problem with the restart issue?

Some more Problems here... (pram/smc reset didn't help)
- After waking up from sleep or deep sleep, sometimes only the beachball appears on a black background => hard reset.
- After waking up with external display (as the only used screen) connected, sometimes there are disturbances everywhere and green sprinkles. Removing external display leads to an errorfree internal display.
- Sometimes, after waking up, everything stays black.=> hard reset

Which of these issues are known and which only happen to me? thx
