What is causing Safari crashes?

<edited by host> It would help to know if the specific configuration of a specific iPhone with specific applets affects the crashing.

When freshly reset, my first-generation 8-gig iPhone running the current softerware revision can sometimes (not always) browse web pages with normal concentrations of pop-ups for up to 15-20 minutes before crashing. That period diminishes over the space of a few hours to less than one minute.

The crashes in my case are nearly always characterized by Safari exiting to the home page.

Have my mail, calendars and contacts set to synchrinze with an Exchange server. I have more than one mailbox configured but only one turned on. I have a VPN connector configured but normally turned off. I have about a dozen randam applets.

SAME HERE!!!!!!!

Mine crashes every 5-10 min, usually while I am typing a reply in a forum. It'll be very sloooooow, then BOOM. Of course, I lose everything so I have to retype the entire post which is a pain in the azz.

I started having this problem with the 1.x firmware also but it got far worse with the 2.0 update. Then the 2.1 temporarly fixed it, but after a week, it started up again. Now it's just unbearable.

I often clear the cache and reboot but it doesn't seem to help. It also seems to happen far more frequently when the battery gets hot.

I am praying that the 2.2 will fix this but if it doesn't I may throw my iphone in to the ocean.

Most Javascript caused crash to Safari. If you disable it, the page never, crash try with that site: http://www.apple.com/iphone/appstore/

Although it is not a iphone hardware problem. It is same as both iphone2G and iphone3G. And also, try to browse this with iphone developer kit iphone simulator on PC, it is same there it again crashes and give the same error: (so it is Firmware 2.1 problem)

I am literally losing my mind and patience with this problem. Safari on the iPhone is now the worse piece of software period. Just about every other app works find, but Safari CRASHES, CRASHES, CRASHES,.. Done restore, no 3rd apps. Clean iPhone OS and this piece of garbage keeps crashing. Even here on Apple own site and forum. Reporting it to the feedback does no good, no one answers back period! FIX THIS APPLE!

Hello,

So we all figured out that safari is the problem,I dont even surf forums and stuff on my iphone, its unbearable. Quick question just kinda throwing it out there...If Safari is the problem, would downloading another web browswer from third party like myFox(firefox) or any other browswer app there is fix the problem? Or does it just kinda work from the same things just different logos??

My safari on 3g iPhone crashes almost on every use. I use it to goto news.yahoo.com. It seems if I try to scroll down the page before the complete pages is loaded. It crashes. Also seems to crash if I change the phone orientation to view page horizontally before page is finish loading.
Some times it crashes when I try to click on a page link.

I clear my Safari cache and still safari crashes most every time while I am viewing news.yahoo.com.

I do notice it crash much more on my 3G than my 2G ever did. The crashes are almost to the point of making Safari browsing unusable on the phone or at least very very frustrating to restart a session after the crash.

I have 2 first generation Iphones, one is 8gb and other 16gb, both were restored to 2.1, with nothing else done to them, i open safari goes to apple.com, surf for about 15 seconds and safari simply shutsdown, exiting completely.
I have 3 friends with 3G iphone and they all have the same problem.
I've not found a pattern to the crashes, but its often, sometimes after 5 seconds and other times 15min but it is inevitable, safari will crash one way or the other if you use it long enough to browse the web.

at first I thought I was websites with certain content.
if the iphone crashes while surfing apple.com, then I have to conclude its not the website because I find it hard to believe that apple's own website would not be iphone friendly.

I've tried various websites, some silly simple and other with flash content, result is the same, safari crashes.

I've had this problem ever since 2.1

This Safari problem is unacceptable. I have a new (2.1) 3G 15G iphone and have tried uninstalling apps and resetting. Safari even crashes on the apple web app page which is a default bookmark. This is my first apple product since 1995 other than ipod and I can not believe that the browser crashes all the time. The browser and interface was the main reason I switched from Wince. At least on Windows Mobile when a site would not load in Pocket Internet Explorer I could switch to skyfire (a proxy browser) or opera. It was sluggish and the screen sucked but at least I knew that if I had enough time to tolerate the interface I would not need to bring my laptop everywhere. Now that I have also lost the ability to tether I am wonder if I should return the iphone. The absence of flash was tolerable but the browser must be stable!!

yeah, sadly the web browser is not stable in 2.1
you might wanna wait till 2.2 comes out as it might silently fix the problem.
apple will not claim or say there is a problem as their policy is to quietly fix things and never publicly state something is wrong because that would mean they have made a mistake, or the is a problem, ont he iphone and apple does nto admit to mistakes or problems.

you can call customer support but they will not be able to fix the problem

i went into an apple store yesterday, picked up one on demo, with the apple genius guy beside me I showed him the problem.
he said he never seen of heard of this problem before and said it must be a bad device.
so i went to the next one beside, same exact thing!!
he was dumbfounded and claimed the device have been abused by ppl that walk in and hence was not a fair test.
in the end the problem was obvious btu he could do nothing to fix it, and I did not expect them to but I wanted to show them that the problem is very real.

until apple releases a 2.2 fix for it thre is nothing that anyone can do to fix this because the problem is in the firmware. for some reason firmware 2.1 broke safari's ability to surf the web.
I', hoping someone at apple is aware of it and are going to implement a fix for 2.2 when it comes out

until then there is nothing you can but wait for 2.2
this problem happens on edge, 3g and wifi, also happens on various websites, almost any website you go to is prone to the crash. somestimes it comes quick other times after a few minutes but seems easy to reproduce IMO.
