Green and Orange flashing lights.. how many others effected?

I have a 1gb shuffle, apples web site tells me was registered on 18 April 2005 so i cant get comp support.

It worked fine until a few weeks ago when on hitting play I got no sound just the alternating flashing of the green and orange light. It had been standing a few days after a recharge from the front USB port of my Dual G5 Mac it was working when inserted and i pulled it out and put it aside fully charged until i needed to use it

I have read a number of threads on this topic not of which appear to have an answer to solve my problems

My iPod updater software is 4.4 although i also have 4.2
When i insert the iPod neither versions recognise the iPod as attached Ihave tested this on my G4 1.33 Al powerbook which has a lot older versions of the iPod updater and none of them confirm the iPod is connected.
Checking 'About this Mac', under the Apple menu the iPod is listed as attached to the fast USB port and gives a serial number 000A2700101BA8FE which is not the same as is written on the case.

I have been maintaining my 'software update' as current as is possible and I know I recently recall taking both upgrades to iTunes and an iPod updater which conicided with the nano and the video launch although i did not recall manually applying the new updater to the Shuffle but i believe with the shuffle iTunes may be able to manage upgrading shuffle firmware when it is connected without the users knowledge. It appears to have expired about the time these upgrades appeared. I am prepered to accept this may not be co-incidental.

Have Apple introduced a bug during the firmware upgrade to some or all iPod shuffles that kills them? Have Apple confirmed there is a problem? Will it be possible for a forthcoming firmware update to correct this issue? Has anyone had this problem arise during normal cycle of use without the shuffle being connected to its mother computer (mac or pc) immediatly prior to it first being a problem.

If anyone has experienced the same process and symptoms listed above occuring and killing their iPod Shuffle please drop you name here and any thing you noted. Likewise anyone who had these symptoms and found a way to force the shuffle to wake up and become visible to the computer any tips on this will be very welcome

thanks

Yeah...have the same problem. Didnt realise so many others did..i posted my own topic earlier but woah..seems im not alone.
I autofilled my iPod, took it out the computer: Orange and Green lights since.
Can't restore or update because of an "internal iPod error", iTunes doesnt recognise my iPod, windows does recognise it but wont let me into it.

Omg..... Just adding to the numbers.
I got my original shuffle last march as a b-day present.
Around august i think? It went through the wash... we took it to apple sometime mid september and they just gave me a new one. I used it normally for about 3 weeks... then sometime in october i hooked it up to my comp one day... and one i pulled it back out 3 hrs later it didnt work... gave me the green orange lights. I didnthave 6.0.1, i dont kno what version i had at the time. This is really frustrating, and we should BOYCOTT apple!!

It makes no sense that Apple puts it head in the sand and refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem with the most recent updater which rendered thousands of Shuffles useless pieces of junk. I have bought 2 ipod minis, 1 nano and a shuffle for my family, along with an 1 ibook and a G4. And this is from a family that uses mostly PCs. I support, or at least, used to support Apple. NEVER again will I ever spend my hard earned money with Apple. Their refusal to support this mess, at least publically, is inexcusable and downright piggy.[/quote]

I posted this on a different thread but I too would like to add my name to the many ticked off shuffle users who feel they have been ripped off by Apple denying a problem exists and charging for replacement of a product less than one year old.

Actually Apple doesn't charge to replace it. They will send you a new one mostly no charge (shipping maybe but most likely not), they just take your credit card number in the event that you don't send the old one back. It seemed more than fair to me when I did it. Its a precaution since they try to keep everyone happy by sending the new one before they receive the malfunctioning shuffle.

I had the same problem and I had to call apple tech support and they had me do all the trouble shooting steps. Once all the steps were exhausted they told me that sometimes if you update the itunes to the newest version, this problem occurs with the ipod shuffle. So I had to have mine sent back and had to get a replacement. Hope this helps!!!

I have the same problem. My 1GB iPod shuffle, after 8 months of use has caught the green-orange syndrome...

This is a shame. I don´t understand why Apple -which is supposed to differentiate from other companies by its design and services- has not yet delivered a solution.

It´s a shame I have to pay shipping costs.

I will seriously doubt I will be buying anything from Apple...

Okay, I have absolutely no technical abilities but somehow my orange-and-green-light dilemma just mysteriously corrected itself. After despondently reading and rereading all of your postings I was convinced the best thing to do was add a sharp point to the end of the this little gem and make it a $100 replacement for the dart I lost several months ago. Anyway, I restarted my computer, logged out and logged back into iTunes. It finally recognized this computer and told me I had three of the five systems allowed for this account. Suddenly it let me move songs from my playlist onto the shuffle icon.

I have no other suggestions or advice on what to do if you have tried all of this already since I'm really not sure what just happened but maybe this will help one in a million of you. Good luck!

Same problem here.

A few months ago, I turned in my 1GB shuffle into the Apple Store for troubleshooting, and they gave me a replacement (most likely a refurbished) after failing to fix the problem.

Now, the replacement shuffle has succumbed to the green-orange blinking lights as well as the fact it cannot mount anywhere on a Mac or a PC. I'm beginning to think this might have to do with firmware or the fact I use my shuffle as a flash drive.
