Green and Orange flashing lights.. how many others effected?

I have a 1gb shuffle, apples web site tells me was registered on 18 April 2005 so i cant get comp support.

It worked fine until a few weeks ago when on hitting play I got no sound just the alternating flashing of the green and orange light. It had been standing a few days after a recharge from the front USB port of my Dual G5 Mac it was working when inserted and i pulled it out and put it aside fully charged until i needed to use it

I have read a number of threads on this topic not of which appear to have an answer to solve my problems

My iPod updater software is 4.4 although i also have 4.2
When i insert the iPod neither versions recognise the iPod as attached Ihave tested this on my G4 1.33 Al powerbook which has a lot older versions of the iPod updater and none of them confirm the iPod is connected.
Checking 'About this Mac', under the Apple menu the iPod is listed as attached to the fast USB port and gives a serial number 000A2700101BA8FE which is not the same as is written on the case.

I have been maintaining my 'software update' as current as is possible and I know I recently recall taking both upgrades to iTunes and an iPod updater which conicided with the nano and the video launch although i did not recall manually applying the new updater to the Shuffle but i believe with the shuffle iTunes may be able to manage upgrading shuffle firmware when it is connected without the users knowledge. It appears to have expired about the time these upgrades appeared. I am prepered to accept this may not be co-incidental.

Have Apple introduced a bug during the firmware upgrade to some or all iPod shuffles that kills them? Have Apple confirmed there is a problem? Will it be possible for a forthcoming firmware update to correct this issue? Has anyone had this problem arise during normal cycle of use without the shuffle being connected to its mother computer (mac or pc) immediatly prior to it first being a problem.

If anyone has experienced the same process and symptoms listed above occuring and killing their iPod Shuffle please drop you name here and any thing you noted. Likewise anyone who had these symptoms and found a way to force the shuffle to wake up and become visible to the computer any tips on this will be very welcome

thanks

Same problems with me.

I spent two hours on the phone with Apple, mostly because I was continually DISCONNECTED while waiting on hold to be transferred to supervisors or specialists. I STRONGLY suggest warning any tech support people with whom you are talking that you have been disconnected while waiting on hold to be transferred. Request that he or she wait to ensure that the transfer is successful. "Mike" was very helpful, especially with transferring me to Tech Support. He took my phone number so that he could call back if I was disconnected. After listening to my explanation of the problem, he went ahead of the cue, told the specialist my problem, and waited to see that I was successfully transferred. Also, he mentioned to me that this is a "recognized issue" with "some" but not all Shuffles. He asked some questions, and he directed me to "Allan" in Tech Support. Allan asked a number of questions about my issue. He then referred me to the Apple Service Request on their website.

I suggest not calling Apple but going directly to the Service Request web page at: http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/.

You will be required to use a credit card for collateral. I tried (to no avail) to get out of this. I requested that Apple send me a mailer for my Ipod, and that they send me a new (or fixed) Shuffle upon receiving my defective one. I told Mike and Allan that having customers use their credit card for collateral is an unfair burden to the customer for a problem Apple created. Unfortunately, they would not change this "policy" for me.

Just got back from a Christmas trip with the family and found a new shuffle waiting at the door with a return envelope for my defective one. I'll send it back in the morning and should be done with this mess.

If anything changes I'll post a followup. I believe Apple knows there's a problem and is not against replacing the defective shuffles, regardless of warranty. Go to http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/ and fill out the form, put your CC number down and return your defective shuffle as soon as the new one arrives.

I checked the Apple Product Replacement Status website and it said that my Shuffle replacement was shipped yesterday via DHL Next Day. A DHL tracking link shows that it's shipping from Elk Grove, CA (Sacramento area) and that it should indeed be here day!

On the Apple Status website, below my replacement status, it also shows that I need to return my defective Shuffle by 1/10/06. A DHL tracking link is also displayed for when I do return the Shuffle.

Just went through the whole online process, only to be told that my 8 month old shuffle is out of warranty and therefore there is a £26 charge! Also, my fault was not in the list (nothing about dead iPod).

£26!! Why? It is a substandard, faulty product that is less than a year old! Poor...

Well it happend to me while replacing one play list with another. The dreaded green and orange light syndrome.
After reloading everything but the kitchen sink, I visited my local Genuis at the Apple Store. The Genuis plugged it into a Mac, said the light patterns were based upon the fact that their were no songs on the Shuffle. She downloaded the software that I couldn't from my Windows machine and it worked perfectly. I was told I should switch to an Apple computer to make my iPod work properly. I don't think so! You folks that are having the green-orange light problem maybe should find a friend with a Mac.
