Green and Orange flashing lights.. how many others effected?

I have a 1gb shuffle, apples web site tells me was registered on 18 April 2005 so i cant get comp support.

It worked fine until a few weeks ago when on hitting play I got no sound just the alternating flashing of the green and orange light. It had been standing a few days after a recharge from the front USB port of my Dual G5 Mac it was working when inserted and i pulled it out and put it aside fully charged until i needed to use it

I have read a number of threads on this topic not of which appear to have an answer to solve my problems

My iPod updater software is 4.4 although i also have 4.2
When i insert the iPod neither versions recognise the iPod as attached Ihave tested this on my G4 1.33 Al powerbook which has a lot older versions of the iPod updater and none of them confirm the iPod is connected.
Checking 'About this Mac', under the Apple menu the iPod is listed as attached to the fast USB port and gives a serial number 000A2700101BA8FE which is not the same as is written on the case.

I have been maintaining my 'software update' as current as is possible and I know I recently recall taking both upgrades to iTunes and an iPod updater which conicided with the nano and the video launch although i did not recall manually applying the new updater to the Shuffle but i believe with the shuffle iTunes may be able to manage upgrading shuffle firmware when it is connected without the users knowledge. It appears to have expired about the time these upgrades appeared. I am prepered to accept this may not be co-incidental.

Have Apple introduced a bug during the firmware upgrade to some or all iPod shuffles that kills them? Have Apple confirmed there is a problem? Will it be possible for a forthcoming firmware update to correct this issue? Has anyone had this problem arise during normal cycle of use without the shuffle being connected to its mother computer (mac or pc) immediatly prior to it first being a problem.

If anyone has experienced the same process and symptoms listed above occuring and killing their iPod Shuffle please drop you name here and any thing you noted. Likewise anyone who had these symptoms and found a way to force the shuffle to wake up and become visible to the computer any tips on this will be very welcome

thanks

Same problem here shuffle was working fine and then stopped, I had problems with computer (two of them) recoginizing the shuffle was even there. Finally got it to see it and had to reformat it and it worked for a day and then quit again. Have the most current update and still can't get the computer to even recoginize that the shuffle is even there.

I got hit today with the blinky lights. Worked like a charm since April, now I'm down. Doesn't show up in Finder or in iTunes, I do show it in the System Profiler though.

Also plugged it into my WinXP machine and was able to check properties. Seems there's no Volume and the size of the disk is now 0kb. Interesting, like the internal memory just died or something?

I'm over warranty, so I'm stuck. Any advise?

There seems to be no fix. I'm not familiar with your warranty paragraphs over there (in Europe all Shuffles have a one-year warranty and are replaced withour further ado), but I could imagine that Apple replaces your Shuffle as a kind of courtesy policy. They seem to have tons of them on their shelves, since after the advent of the Nano no-one buys them any more and they will be phased out soon. And I may be repeating myself: They messed it up with their software updates!!

Add one from Singapore. A 1Gb model.

It worked fine for about 3 months, and just today, I hooked it up to a 3rd computer, and unplugged it after the computer had shut down. Next thing i know - traffic lights.

Off to the Apple Store tomorrow. See what they say :<

sigh. and I was so in love with the smallness.

No, really, you can stop trying all these fixes - people here have tried all sorts of things on all platforms. Since you can't "hard reset" the shuffle to factory settings, even going back to earlier versions of the software on your computer doesn't help. It's dead. Or at least in a coma from which you can probably only awake it by taking it apart and doing some kind of reset. Go and ask for a replacement! Aggressively, if necessary.

I had a worst-case. Completely dead iPod Shuffle. No recognition in: iTunes, iPod Updater (any flavor), on the desktop, in Disk Utility, nada (except System Profiler showed an iPod plugged in). Upon insertion I get a single flash of green, a pause, then a steady flashing amber.

This happened after a routine Software Update session which included Tiger 10.4.3 and iTunes 6.0.1 on a Mac Mini.

I called Apple Tech Support: 1-800-275-2273, and reached Sam.

Sam was very pleasant and asked me the standard questions. I told him I've tried all recovery avenues. He asked for my serial number and confirmed it was covered by 1-year warrantee (Shuffle bought in March '05). He suggested the online service page, but I told him they wanted to charge me since it was longer than six months, and I felt it was the iTunes update that caused my problem and wished not to be charged.

He offered to pass me on to a Product Specialist. So far so good (it gets better).

Product Specialist, Shawn, also pleasant and obviously knowledgeable, asked me a number of details about how my shuffle died. He indicated that APPLE WAS AWARE AND IS LOOKING INTO THIS PROBLEM. The detailed questions are an attempt to get to the root cause of the problem. Here's what he asked me to do:

• Leave the Shuffle alone, do not make any further attempts to restore it.
• Apple will send mailing labels to me for return shipment.
• The difference is: These labels are not to a normal return facility, but, he suspects, directly to Apple Engineering as they investigate this problem.
• After they receive my Shuffle, they promise to send me a new shuffle. (This is also different than the normal return procedure where people have received new product with labels to then return the old. I was not asked to provide credit card information.)

I haven't received the return labels yet, but wanted to relate my experience thus far. I will post a follow-up.

I give kudos to Apple for doing the right thing by seriously investigating this issue. I encourage you to contact Apple Support if you have a "Dead Shuffle", even if you are out of warrantee. If you are willing to describe your experience and send your dead unit to Apple—the Shuffle's dead anyway, so no harm there—it may help Apple solve this knotty technical problem. If you are within the 1-year warranty period you are likely to get a new Shuffle without extra charges.

Good Luck,

Mac Mini with 1GB iPod Shuffle Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Just as a followup:

I called applecare today and spoke with a rep about my issue. Told him that it was not working and that I get nothing when I plug it into my Mac or my PC. Went around and around a few minutes on performing the reset, restoring the software, etc. He walked me through trying to restore on my PC using the 11-17 update, and it actually froze my computer.

So he suggested I send in my Shuffle to have it replaced using the depot apple site. I asked if it would cost money to ship it, he said no it shouldn't since it was an internal problem, not something I did. (He later rambled on about how if Apple charged for iTunes they wouldn't have the problem of iPods getting broken, so his credibility is a bit sketchy).

Filled out the forms online and was told there will be a shipping charge, but I kept filling out the form. When it got to the point with the shipping charge and entering my CC info, it rang up as $0.00 for a total.

Believe it or not, a new shuffle is on the way to my house now with a box to send the broken one back to Apple.

I urge anyone with this issue to please call Apple to report it, warranty or not. I purchased my Shuffle in April, more than 8 months ago, and they're still covering it.

I've had my 512MB Shuffle for a few weeks and I just got the blinking green/orange lights when trying to play. iTunes is 6.0.1 and updated the Shuffle to 1.1.3 on day one. I've tried all the restore procedures, but like most, I can't see the Shuffle in iTunes, updater or in Windows Explorer.

I'll be stopping by the retail store after the holiday. If that fails, I'll definitely be calling tech support.
