Green and Orange flashing lights.. how many others effected?

I have a 1gb shuffle, apples web site tells me was registered on 18 April 2005 so i cant get comp support.

It worked fine until a few weeks ago when on hitting play I got no sound just the alternating flashing of the green and orange light. It had been standing a few days after a recharge from the front USB port of my Dual G5 Mac it was working when inserted and i pulled it out and put it aside fully charged until i needed to use it

I have read a number of threads on this topic not of which appear to have an answer to solve my problems

My iPod updater software is 4.4 although i also have 4.2
When i insert the iPod neither versions recognise the iPod as attached Ihave tested this on my G4 1.33 Al powerbook which has a lot older versions of the iPod updater and none of them confirm the iPod is connected.
Checking 'About this Mac', under the Apple menu the iPod is listed as attached to the fast USB port and gives a serial number 000A2700101BA8FE which is not the same as is written on the case.

I have been maintaining my 'software update' as current as is possible and I know I recently recall taking both upgrades to iTunes and an iPod updater which conicided with the nano and the video launch although i did not recall manually applying the new updater to the Shuffle but i believe with the shuffle iTunes may be able to manage upgrading shuffle firmware when it is connected without the users knowledge. It appears to have expired about the time these upgrades appeared. I am prepered to accept this may not be co-incidental.

Have Apple introduced a bug during the firmware upgrade to some or all iPod shuffles that kills them? Have Apple confirmed there is a problem? Will it be possible for a forthcoming firmware update to correct this issue? Has anyone had this problem arise during normal cycle of use without the shuffle being connected to its mother computer (mac or pc) immediatly prior to it first being a problem.

If anyone has experienced the same process and symptoms listed above occuring and killing their iPod Shuffle please drop you name here and any thing you noted. Likewise anyone who had these symptoms and found a way to force the shuffle to wake up and become visible to the computer any tips on this will be very welcome

thanks

Ditto on the disco lights.

Thanks to those that have gone before me and provided helpful info.

I started the process of filing an online support request. Once I entered my iPod serial number I was informed that my warranty was up and it had been over six months since I purchased my iPod. Even when I took my shoes off to help with the math I couldn't come up with 6 months between July and December.

The next day I called tech support and got "Steven". I axed the Stever if he ever read these forums. He said that he didn't, but who new some Apple tech doods that do. I recemmended he try it. ; )

The Steve found that the date of purchase was not on record - thus explaining why the web site just assumed I purchased my iPod before they were available for purchase. Sure, I follow that. (roll eyes)

The Steve put me on hold twice, for quite a while. He appologized and told him it was fine by me, since he was making every effort to help me. He never admitted that he had heard of the issue, but then he never gave me any hassle - he just pretty much went straight to getting a replacement in the works.

In the end, the Steve got the correct date entered into their system and had started the process of getting me a new iPod. I had to fax a copy of my receipt, which was fine by me.

Now, keep in mind, so far I have nuttin, but there appears to be cause for hope that I will see a replacement sometime in my lifetime.

Good luck to y'all gettin 'er done!

I also notice that after madonnas latest download on my ipod shuffle the ipod cuts off on me and i Must re-set the ipod by turning it off.

I've had the same problem with my 512MB shuffle. It appears to be a problem with the "Get Together" track from Madonna's "Confessions On a Dance Floor (Deluxe Version)." At the end of this song I hear a few clicks (one pretty loud) and then my shuffle stops working until I reset it. Removing "Get Together" from the album mix seems to solve the problem (but this particular song does appear to be defective).

Oh God! Add me to the list of crazy blinking lights on my less than 6 month old Chuffle.

After reading some promising posts regarding taking the Chuffle to the iPod store, ill be making a trek to the Austin, Tx store. Hopefully they will just give me a **** chuffle so i can GTFO quick.

I was considering a Nano, but now im "S"cared 😟

make sure you are using only acc files on the shuffle , it will not work with lossless files. i hope this works for you it did for me. i started using acc files but when i got used to the thing and after reading the lossless was better i started loading all my cd's lossless and convert all the one's that i had before updated the software and then it was not working. then tryed everything twice before trying acc files and wam it works now. even did the drive letter thing in the fourm info. only changing files to acc worked.

I have the exact same problem. Press the button and green and orange light blinks. Connect to Windows Xp and it is recognized as a mass storage drive but cannot be accessed. iTunes cannot recognize it. It is a 3 weeks new 512M Shuffle as a gift. The firt time I own an Apple product, and the last time I own an Apple product.

i have had the same problem as everyone else. nice to be a part of the club. anyway i have called apple support and they say to pay a 30.00 charge to have them look at it. this is unreal. if so many peopleare having this problem why doesnt apple address it.... i will not be sending money to fix a problem that noone has the solution for. any suggestions on how to get a new one by contacting apple?

I hope this works for everyone else - it did for me. I had the exact same error everyone is talking about; and my shuffle would only intermittently work on a PC. Strangely enough, when I brought it to my local Apple Store it appeared to work... Since it was intermittent I thought I was the problem. I'd updated it several times and it was always flaky. It seemed to function better on a USB 2 connection and always required me to jostle it a bit to get it recognized by the host computer when plugging it in. The dreaded yellow & green lights means the shuffle thinks it was unplugged without being ejected properly - but if the connection is bad you can't help it! Well, I recently downloaded the newest iPod updater (that even said it had shuffle bug fixes) and updated my software... and was about to remove it when I thought the updater was done - that may be where I created the problem a long time ago - it has to finish and launch iTunes. Voila! no bliking lights and it works great (finally)!

I sadly join this grim group of Shuffle-owners, whose music player went dead just after the latest iPod-updater. The blinking green and orange lights are the only sign of life on my 1 Gt Shuffle (purchased in April 05). And no mac or pc lets me use iPod Updater to restore the factory-settings, cause Shuffle is not visible to the software.
