Green and Orange flashing lights.. how many others effected?

I have a 1gb shuffle, apples web site tells me was registered on 18 April 2005 so i cant get comp support.

It worked fine until a few weeks ago when on hitting play I got no sound just the alternating flashing of the green and orange light. It had been standing a few days after a recharge from the front USB port of my Dual G5 Mac it was working when inserted and i pulled it out and put it aside fully charged until i needed to use it

I have read a number of threads on this topic not of which appear to have an answer to solve my problems

My iPod updater software is 4.4 although i also have 4.2
When i insert the iPod neither versions recognise the iPod as attached Ihave tested this on my G4 1.33 Al powerbook which has a lot older versions of the iPod updater and none of them confirm the iPod is connected.
Checking 'About this Mac', under the Apple menu the iPod is listed as attached to the fast USB port and gives a serial number 000A2700101BA8FE which is not the same as is written on the case.

I have been maintaining my 'software update' as current as is possible and I know I recently recall taking both upgrades to iTunes and an iPod updater which conicided with the nano and the video launch although i did not recall manually applying the new updater to the Shuffle but i believe with the shuffle iTunes may be able to manage upgrading shuffle firmware when it is connected without the users knowledge. It appears to have expired about the time these upgrades appeared. I am prepered to accept this may not be co-incidental.

Have Apple introduced a bug during the firmware upgrade to some or all iPod shuffles that kills them? Have Apple confirmed there is a problem? Will it be possible for a forthcoming firmware update to correct this issue? Has anyone had this problem arise during normal cycle of use without the shuffle being connected to its mother computer (mac or pc) immediatly prior to it first being a problem.

If anyone has experienced the same process and symptoms listed above occuring and killing their iPod Shuffle please drop you name here and any thing you noted. Likewise anyone who had these symptoms and found a way to force the shuffle to wake up and become visible to the computer any tips on this will be very welcome

thanks

i'm having the same issue. After the whole problem with iTunes 5.0 my shuffle just stopped one day in mid song and when i reset it and tried to play again i just got the alternating flashing green and orange lights. which means error so i tried reseting nothing. Windows can see it and installs it but i can't access it through explorer or iTunes. i downloaded the updater to do a restore and nothing. i've tried all of little help me things and i get nothing but a blinking orange light when it's hooked up to my computer. It's been a couple of months since i bought this(1 gig shuffle) and i'm kinda perterbed that it's probably gonna cost me money to fix.

The general customer service line is 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) but a better number is tech support 1-800-275-2273. Your Shuffle has a 1 year warranty. If it's within the first six months, they'll send you a free replacement w/ no shipping charge; you have to return the defective one as soon as you receive it or else they'll charge you. If it's within the last six months, they'll send you a replacement but you have to pay $30 somethin' dollars for shipping (likewise, return defective one). That's standard procedure anyway. In my opinion, this is an exception since Apple released defective software (new iTunes update). I'm in the last six months so I stood my ground and tech support forwarded me to a "product specialist" and they acknowledged that the problem was due to the new iTunes update and sent me a free replacement w/ no shipping charge. I registered it, ran the iPod 11-17 Update on it, and then used it in iTunes and it's workin' fine so far. I hope this is some help to any of you.

Thanks for the info. I burned up enough time with all the "fixes"
I guess I will be heading back to the apple store tommorrow. What a frustrating process. If they would just monitor the boards they could let people know what to do. I guess when you sell gazillions of these things it doesn't matter. If they would only help as fast as they take your cash!

Called Apple support today. Their advice was to try and format the iPod on a Windows machine, since it's recognized there - no avail, keep getting an I/O error.

So since all shuffles are less than a year old, everyone should get a replacement. Go to the store where you bought it. Or go to

http://depot.info.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

They'll send you a new shuffle, and you send them the defective one. I think the first thing you should do is run the latest iPod updater.

A side note: I asked if I could "upgrade" to a new iPod model - no way. They are phasing out the shuffles and obviously want to get rid of them. Seems that not so many people like the idea of listening in shuffle mode without knowing what they're listening to - and Steve was so enthusiastic about it!

I found that there was nothing wrong with my shuffle, it was the latest ITUNES that was the problem, 100%. This leads me to believe there is nothing wrong with anyone's Shuffle, we may have different OS platforms, but I bet everyone has updated to the newest ITUNES. I read some of the other posting for long drawn out solutions, but for now my temp solution is to use WINAMP with the MLPOD plugin. Sorry Mac users. I uninstalled ITUNES, ran WINAMP with my network share as the watch folder and was able to fill my Shuffle with no problem. This is a temporary solution, but WINAMP is a mighty fine program too!

Just an update to my earlier post...

I tried everything I could think of and then took my shuffle back to the apple store. The genius bar people fiddled around with it for a while and then gave me a brand new replacement. Bottom line is that there seems to be no fix. I brought the new one home plugged it in and it works just as it should. Yeah! Best part is that the new one has the full one year warranty also! The people at the store were great.

Oh, I also updated the shuffle when the screen asked me if I wanted to (I think this was 1.1.3) and it worked fine. Good luck with all of yours!
