I haven't done any extensive troubleshooting yet, but at a first glance, it appears that since the installation of iTunes 4.9, my iPod is no longer being recognized when it is connected via Firewire.
It does not mount on the desktop, cannot be seen by iTunes, and iPod updater does not see it as being connected.
I've done the usual maintenance, repaired permissions, deleted plists, etc... and nothing seemed to help.
I'll be playing around some more tonight, but I just wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything similar. I read a few posts here that were somewhat related, but most were USB issues, and not Firewire.
Friday morning (7/1/2005), I installed the latest updated on my iPod, and updated my Powerbook with iTunes 4.9. Believing everything to be fine (Apple is supposedly reliable), I went on a weekend vacation. iPod problems began immediately! An hour into my drive, my iPod CRASHED - with no apparent warning. ALL of my music (playlists, artists, etc) were erased. Needless to say, I spent the entire weekend with a broken iPod and some crappy CDs. I thought the iPod was reliable and functional - it proved to be worthless and frustrating.
Upon returning home this evening, I restored my iPod. While adding music to the restored iPod, it froze. After TEN separate iPod restores, it still freezes after a few minutes of powering on. Music cannot be added...I am seriously disappointed with these events. Frozen and disfunctional iPods do not positively reflect on Apple.
Apple - Please provide a fix to this problem!!! My situation does not sound unique. There are several people on this thread with similar frustrations about the new software updates for the iPod/iTunes. Thank you.
Has anyone else recieved the following error message:
"The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/iPodDriver.kext/Contents/Plugins/iPodFirewireTransp ortSupport.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor.
No iPod in iTunes. I can only see the iPod in Disk Utility. Then when I try to verify the iPod I receive the following: "The underlying task reported a failure on exit (-9972)." Any ideas?
I encountered the same problem you did. The iPod appeared to be connected to my PowerBook, but it wouldn't mount.
I ended up completely discharging my iPod, unplugging my PowerBook overnight, and then, upon seeing your System Profiler mention, I realized my iPod was connected, but not mounting. I went to ~Applications/Utilities/iPod Software Updater and just restored my iPod. It worked!
Z - thank you for your suggestions. After running through a few more checks, I decided to call Apple and put the extended care package to work. Spoke with a gentleman called Nick who did one thing and one thing only. Seeing as my iPod was recognized in Disk Utility, but would not mount, he had me open up the most recent iPod Updater and restore myPod to factory fresh settings. This erases everything from your iPod in case anyone is thinking about doing this. Make no mistake, if you do not have your music in iTunes, but only on your iPod, you will start from scratch. Fortunately, I kept all my songs in iTuns and on the iPod identical.
I restored myPod and in a matter of seconds, it mounted and showed up in iTunes. About 40 minutes later, all the music transferred as if nothing was wrong.
Obviously, there's a big problem with the iTunes 4.9 update and iPod. Mine (a 3rd generation 20GB version) is joining the list here as well. I have a combination of similar problems since updating, and have tried all the fixes offered here to no avail. Here's my list of problems thus far.
1. iPod is not mounting in either desktop or iTunes since updating last week. At first, that was the only problem but at least I could still recharge and play anything already loaded into iPod. Since then, each time I tried to connect, a different problem has been encountered.
2. iPod is recognized in the System profile, but not in the Disk Utility.
3. When connected to the USB cable, all I get is an Apple icon. I purchased the USB cable specifically for this problem, and although it worked yesterday, today I am back to square one.
4. When connected to the FW cable, iPod flips into a flashing disc mode, runs whatever it runs, then asks what language I'd like it to run in.
5. No matter what I have tried, I cannot restore settings because the iPod updater does not recognize the iPod.
I cannot spend another minute going around in circles trying to fix something that seems defy permanent fixing. Hello? Is anyone at Apple reading these posts?
My 40 gig iPod just joined the list, probably erasing about 6,000 songs. Immediately after installing the iPod update for 4.9 support, when the iPod rebooted, the OS (Mac) said a disk had been inserted that could not be read, giving the options to initialize, eject or ignore.
Does anyone know how I can at least get the music off the thing, or check if there's anything on it? All of the music should be in /iPod_control/Music/, but there's the problem of mounting the drive. Has anyone had any luck getting music off via the Apple stores?
Connect iPod and hold Command + Option. This will stop the iPod from auto syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
Then enable disk use for the iPod
Open terminal (its in Applications>Utilities) then type: cp -R '/Volumes/<Your iPod's Name>/iPod_Control/Music/' '/Users/<Your name of home folder>/Desktop/iPod Music' Note: if your iPod's name contains an apostrophe (') then do not include the first set of quotation marks (from /Volumes to Control/Music/), follow the command but place a \ key directly before any spaces or apostrophes, eg: cp -R /Volumes/Joe\ Blogg\'s\ iPod/iPod_Control/Music '/Users/Joe/Desktop/iPod Music'
Hit return
Sit back as the contents of your iPod's Library are copied into a new folder on your hard drive
Open iTunes preferences and under the advanced pane, make sure that 'Keep iTunes Music folder organized' and, 'Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library' are checked. The first option will fix up the filenames so that they appear normal, the second makes sure that the songs are somewhere safe that iTunes knows about.
Drag the new folder with your Music into the iTunes window to import your music.
You are having
kernel panic.
Make a
log of your kernel panic, then start a new topic, saying you get kernel panic when connecting iPod, and post the log.
I also recommend sending it to Apple through this
feedback form.
FWIW - Since installing the iTunes upgrade on June 28, I've wasted one entire week trying to decipher the many good hints and suggestions here... all to no avail. What finally worked for me (and it appears that any fixes offered in this discussion list are good for some, not for others, so be forewarned) was to open the iPod updater of 03-05-2005 from my utilities folder, click on "restore" then follow the directions from there. My FW cable and port are working again, everything copied into my iPod from my iTunes, and so far, all systems are working. Stay tuned....
Hello everybody! "Happy" to see I'm not alone with this problem... In my case, the sync doesn't work since I updated to iTunes 4.9 and to iPod 1.5. It start to sync and then - FREEZE!
I try everything: reboot, restore factory settings, it still freeze during the sync... THIS IS HORRIBLE 😟
I own a brave generation One 10Go iPod, which worked perfectly well until this update crash it. I don't even know if I could come back to iTunes 4.8 without loosing all my Library...
Thank you for your help. I contacted Apple Support last Sunday. The technician advised me to turn off my computer and restart in safe-mode. When I did that, my computer recognized my Ipod. I shut it off again and restarted it in "normal" and everything has been operating smoothly since.
All of these suggestions to reset the settings are missing one thing: What about the play list that I have created over time? Resetting the iPod will erase all of this and for me that is not a solution. Apple's tech support people need to correct the software problem and do it soon.
