Here is a similar issue... I cant get my ipod to show up, and I therefore can't update my music on my ipod. I tried resetting, but that didn't work, and then I tried downloading ipod updater but it says that "This software cannot be installed on this computer." Any idea what is going on. I have a G4 OSX

Do you see iPod on desktop?? Do you see it in the iTunes source list??

The iPod shows up on the desktop, but not in iTunes. I read all the tips and figure the best thing for me to do is simply restore it, but I cant open the updater. It is sitting there on my desktop but nothing happens when I open it. Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

You may be able to ressurect it by hooking up a USB cable, and then running the ipod update utility.

I tried the reset trick, no luck. Now, the iPod seems to have no music on it Isn't that odd?

Well, now I am trying to figure out a way to run down the battery so I can try that particular suggestion.

Any suggestions on how to quickly drain a BLANK iPod? This issue is a Joke.

I dug up my USB cable, that trick did not work for me. However, I did a COPR restart

(Command-Option-P-R) and reset the PRAM and was able to run the updater and regain control of my iPod. Dunno if this work for anyone here, but since it did for me, I wanted to post it.

Just seemed that there was something that was resetting when the iPod battery wore down to nothing... so a logical step to try. Good luck to all.

I wanted to add something to my solution.

This my seem basic to many of you, but I had a friend who was struggling with this. He did not have the updater installed. so he downloaded it from Apple.

Remember, you will download a disk image. From there, you will install the updater. YOU DO NOT INSTALL THIS DIRECTLY TO YOUR IPOD. You install the updater to your computer and then run the installer to update the ipod.

Again, I know to many of you this will be... "duh!" material, but there's a lot of new mac users out there, so I wanted to post it.

Again, the pram zap at startup has been a good solution for me. Hope it may be working for some of you as well.

I've been having this problem as well, even before the new iTunes install and with my old iPod as well. I run a really old Powerbook though, 10.2, so it may have something to do with it.

I unhooked the iPod from the craddle (it was flashing the "Do not disconnect") and put it on disk mode (reset, then previous and next pressed while the apple shows). Rebooted it again. Ran the iPod updater while I did that and switched Firewire terminals. Ran the updater, rebooted, dropped the iPod in the craddle. Lo and behold, it works again ^^

Huh? I have the orignial 5GB iPod, and AFAIK, they have always been firewire based. Of course, the new units with dock are technically either/or, is that what you mean?

Just looking for clarification on this, not trying to be a smartass.

I installed iLife '04 and iTunes appeared with a ? mark. I reinstalled iLife and now when I plugged in my iPod all of my songs are gone! They are not on the iPod or on iTunes. I am completely confused. As I type I am on the phone with support waiting. Tell me if anyone has a clue about my problem.

Your music should be in your home folder in Music>iTunes>iTunes Music.

Second, the question mark problem did not need a reinstall (it was a simple issue of fixing the alias in the dock)

For those following this in other threads, I fixed my iPod.

Following one of the Apple technotes, I tried a full Archive Install, which brought my iPod back to life.
