iPhone 3G Calling random people by itself

I find lately with my iPhone 3G that it calls people by itself. I was just driving down the road in the car with the phone beside me and all of a sudden i heard 'hello, hello' and low and behold there was my mother on the phone.

has anyone else experienced this? i was wondering if it was voice activated or if it was a bug or something?

Happens to both my Mom and Dad with their iPhones. I've gotten calls from each of them once, but I have no idea how often it happens to call other people instead. Let's hope Apple can fix this in the next revision.

I know the iPhone isn't completely isolated in this quirk, as you can find forums on other brands doing the same thing. But it's annoying nonetheless, and one expects an Apple product to be better, since you pay more for it.

This just happened to me. The phone was on my desk, untouched. It called a person whom I had not called or heard from in months so it was not dialing a 'recent' inbound or outbound contact. It left a 2 minute voice message on the other end ... I was having a sensitive client discussion. I have version 2.2.1.

I called Apple support and "Danny" said he'd never heard of this problem. I suggested that he Google iPhone + random calls, and visit the forum. After being on hold off and on, he came back to tell me that it is not a known problem .... but that the best way to prevent it from happening is to use the passcode lock. o

Double-speak, anyone?

I am very concerned about this and hope to hear back about a resolution or the iPhone will have to go.

After seeing a commercial from Apple for an app called Loopt, I decided to "check it out". I signed up for a Loopt account. Within 5 minutes of opening the Loopt account, I received a call on my iPhone from a complete stranger. She said that I had just called her from my iPhone but before she could answer the phone, I had hung up. The last call in my call log was 2 hours prior to receiving her call. I figured that Loopt had some sort of bug in their software that had "broadcast" my number to other people on the service by "ringing" their phones with my cell number being displayed. I immediately closed the Loopt account. I send a message to the people at Loopt and they assured me that their service would never do anything like this. (my settings on Loopt were to share my location with no one). After reading other experiences here, I'm wondering if maybe I had blamed Loopt in error? Are other people having the "calls made by itself" problem with the iPhone also Loopt subscribers? Since calceling the account, I haven't received any other unexpected calls. I'd definitely be interested in hearing other people's experiences.

This has just now started happening to me. Yesterday, I was at the gym on the eliptical trainer, and the iphone suddenly rang. When I answered, my wife said I had called her. I thought it might be an Electro-Magnetic field generated by the trainer.

Today my wife has the phone, and my office phone rang. Caller ID showed it was the iphone. When I answered, my wife was not at the other end. I heard only background noises. Much like a kid who pressed a speed dial button on a land-line phone.

Anyway,. thought I'd share this with everyone. Gremlins, I guess.

Does anyone have any answers to this issue? My iphone spent most of yesterday calling my daughter's dentist office. They were finally able to get a hold of me toward the end of the day to let me know. They had called earlier in the day to remind me of an appointment. I'm thinking my phone decided to return their call of its own accord. Also, it just happened this morning with my girlfriend. She told me I had called her at 0650 which was almost exactly the time I unplugged it from the computer and headed to work. I remember unplugging it and locking it out before putting it into my pocket. I've now started deleting all my recent and favorites call lists to see if that will help. This problem is really a show-stopper if there isn't a fix or work-around.
As a side note, I do have my phone paired up to a bluetooth headset. This is due to another problem with my phone ear piece. It suddenly has problems with the ear piece volume being very difficult to hear on. I've seen a lot of people with the same ear piece problems too whilst searching discussion boards.
Does anyone else who has had the random calling problem have their phone linked up to some sort of blue tooth device?

My problem is similar - I will be speaking to someone, and suddenly the call is cut off and a new call is being made and someone from my call list has randomly been dialed. this has happened several times in the 10 days I have owned this phone. I am planning on going in to the apple store to have it checked. I also have a problem with the phone shutting down for several minutes after I end a call, which is ended by the other person hanging up on me, because my screen is completely black and unresponsive. If I happen to reach someone's voice mail, I am unable to end the call after leaving a message because my screen is totally black. I can hear the voice asking if I want to end the call, but can not respond. Is this the way its supposed to work?
