iPhone 3G Calling random people by itself

I find lately with my iPhone 3G that it calls people by itself. I was just driving down the road in the car with the phone beside me and all of a sudden i heard 'hello, hello' and low and behold there was my mother on the phone.

has anyone else experienced this? i was wondering if it was voice activated or if it was a bug or something?

I was simply saying it could be done, nothing is impervious to viri, if it was worth it, it could be done. Proof of concept proves that it could be done with some genius code work. You may be right that proof of concept doesn't mean it can be spread via macs, I'll concede to that, but certainly you agree that it could be done, I mean it's only code and any code can be hacked.

I agree, no OS is impervious, but what makes doing so worth it? Does a script kiddie or the scum that spend the majority of their time working on this get paid by someone, or is it worth it just for the fame that would be gained from their peers in the underground hacking world? I think it is the latter and as I already provided, what better way to gain fame in this regard than to be successful writing a virus for OS X. It would be all over the news wires and on the internet in a matter of hours if not minutes.

I didn't say it couldn't happen. I said it hasn't happened yet with OS X, which has been available for 8 years or so. 8 years is a lifetime in some regards in the computer industry. I don't buy into the security through obscurity talk and myth for if the only thing gained by doing so is fame and not fortune, I would think what a better way to gain fame? And it would be unique fame since no one else has done it - yet. I venture to say there are many working on this very thing and many more who have tried it and gave up.

I agree we should be careful about using an app that requires uploading contact information or any data to a developer's server, but installing such an app and doing so is by choice and a warning is provided. If this app makes you that uncomfortable, I would remove the app and quit using it, unless it performs a function that works without having to upload your iPhone's contact information to a server.

This is a separate issue, as I understand it. The issue that was resolved with the 2.2 update forced a call to any one of several set 900-numbers. It hardly seems like it would be advantageous to make the phone call random people in a user's contacts. Plus, I don't think SkyNet has taken over just yet. I'm not saying it's not possible, I guess. This is just starting to sound a bit like the lady who wanted to know if her husband's phone could really take a picture of his wang and mail it to random lady friends.

So a bunch of people in this discussion don't seem to believe you are experiencing this. Well, I can vouch for you, this is happening. Only its not just the G3 iPhone, it has happened on 3 separate occasions with my first gen iphone. Most recently my phone called my mom, while it was in my pocket, and she could overhear my entire conversation with my girlfriend. She called me back after she hung up to tell me that I had called her.

This has happened twice before, the second of which was while I was in an elevator (phone in pocket again) and after getting off the call a girl standing next to me said the same thing had happened to her with her iPhone.

So they can doubt you if they want, but I know exactly what you are experiencing.

Well Bryan, i posted this a few weeks ago and it seemed to go off topic very quick with a massive debate on viruses on mac. i am nearly positive it's not a virus and that only leaves a software bug. it's a relief to hear that other people are going through the same thing though. i haven't experienced any problems now mind you since i updated to 2.2. have you?

It's an old common problem (see thread Nov 07 in forums.macrumors.com). I just got my second iphone 3 months ago and it happens all the time, my dad at midnight, my kid's old Brownie Troop leader from 2 years ago, just random people from my address book! It also occasionally adds them to my favorites! I just deleted 4 new "favorites" that I didn't call...well I did call, but I didn't try and call! It never happened on my other phone (both 3Gs, but the first screen stopped working).

Just wanted to confirm that both my girlfriend and myself have had this issue on all models of the iPhone up to the 3G we have owned since they came out in the US. It was nearly a daily issue with her 3G iPhone until the 2.2 update. Not as often for me with 2.1.

One day I was looking down at my 3G iPhone and watched it go from dark screen to call mode dialing her! And, yes, I thought she was crazy after hearing her say it was happening all the time...In the week prior to 2.2 upgrade, her phone called me at least 5 times... 2 of which it was sitting alone on a table. Fortunately I was in the same room when my iPhone rang with her caller id info displayed. I walked over to the bar table where it was sitting and sure enough it was active with a connection to my number.

Doesn't seem to be isolated to last number dialed...

Thank god for other people experiencing the same problem as i seriously thought i was going crazy and i know for a fact that all my friends would snigger every-time i mentioned it so that's great to put that one to rest.

i haven't experienced any problems now since i upgraded to 2.2 so all is well on the calling front however i have noticed that every time i sync the phone with iTunes i get charged by my operator... O2 Ireland! Yes! i'm trying to get to the bottom of it before i reach a financial bottom!

I have the version 2.2 installed and my iphone does this as well. I was just at a conference and it called more then one of my contacts. Is there a way to prevent it from calling people by itself without turning it off every time done using it? This is driving me crazy. I tried moving my contact list to the 2nd page but it still does it. Obviously we are not all crazy. Is there a case out there that auto shuts off iphone from call mode? Are there any apps that can prevent this?

Well, count me as yet another victim of this bizarre behavior. I've had a friend's iPhone 3G call my iPhone 3G twice. And, this is using version 2.2 (on both phones).

When I answered the phone (both times), I could hear her at the checkout of a store carrying on a conversation (very creepy, indeed).

Not to be outdone, my iPhone called a colleague's Blackberry the other day, and I overheard quite a bit of the conversation he was having at lunch - without him every realizing his phone had rung.

In all cases, I spent an inordinate amount of time saying "HELLO!!!!" before finally hanging up bewildered.

I don't know what's going on, but my Sanyo phone never took on robotic characteristics 😉 Actually, it's kind of fun; but I hope Dick Cheney isn't listening to me when I don't know it!!!

This just happened to me. The random calls started at 5am to my sister. She received at least 10 calls from me (she was pretty upset). I went to sleep around 1am. The phone was plugged into the charger. I called her around 6pm the night before; she was the last phone call I made before the random calls started. Good thing it was her and not my boss or something...

Any ideas?

I have 2.2 firmware. Phone was bought on 1/1/09 from AT&T.

For those whose phone randomly called, does anyone have a bluetooth headset with the phone, and was it on? I think my bluetooth headset had something to do with it...it might have triggered the phone to call the last #. I was half asleep when I found the problem, but I believe the bluetooth screen was on. Also, I found my bluetooth flashing, like it had just made a call. But I'm not sure if the mysterious calls were due to something on the bluetooth end or the iPhone end (meaning, I don't know which device actually triggered the phone to call).

Ive been having the same problem lately, seems like ever since my iPhone 3G updated to the new software. I don't get bothered by stupid things like this but it called my grandpa while i was at a party at 12am and left him a 10minute message with people screaming in the background and loud music. Someone help, I'm going to try a complete restore on my phone but have heard that this isn't helping. P.s. i've only had this phone for about a month
