Firmware 2.2 - Apple Lossless Still Skips

Really disappointed after applying firmware 2.2 that the 2G iPod Touch still skips when playing apple lossless while screen is off.

Bump

2nd gen Touch 16gb, running 2.2. Returned once for WPA problem, fixed that and was told the skipping would go away with 2.2 at that time. I'm sitting here now hearing skips every 45-60sec on Apple Lossless. Its a very cool product, but it's performance leaves much to be desired if it can't play its manufacturers own proprietary audio codec!

Someone fix this please! It will be the last Apple product I return if this keeps up. Why so secretive Mr. Jobs?

There is an irony in that krekavhts, Apple having problems with it's own codec.

It would be nice if Apple actually acknowledged the issue and just clarified they accept it is an issue and that they are looking in to resolving it (if is software issue, a future, next update?)

I am just transferring my cd's into Wav at the moment and all seem's to be okay apart for the less memory available now due to bigger files.

Have any of you in this thread listened to 320kps ripped CD's? They sound pretty good to me. I don't see the practical (space, synch time, issues with skipping and battery life...) reasons for using lossless, quite frankly. I've tried all the various codecs and 320 AAC seems to be the best "bang for the buck". Just a thought...I don't want to start an encoding format war!

It's what I'd call a "workaround". What if Apple doesn't fix this issue for many months, or ever? Are you all going to simply continue to listen to skipping music? iTunes can convert all your files to another format by choosing it in menu option, Edit, Preference, General, import settings. Then, select all music, right click, and "Create [x] Version". It might take all day long for several thousand files, but it's a "hands-free" operation. What I'm trying to say, is why buck city hall. If you want to hear music without interruptions, convert your files. Otherwise, remain frustrated that lossless doesnt work correctly at this point.

I think it is more a case of principal than anything David is what other people are saying when you pay £290 rrp/srp for a portable player that cannot even cope with it's own codec format.

At the end of the day it comes down to subjective opinion on what make's a good codec for your player, some people have $/£30 earphone's, some have $/£250 pair of earphone's to listen on.

Then everyone has different levels of hearing to each other and some people can heat the difference between 320kps and say wav, flac or apple lossless and then on the other hand some cannot. If you can great, people who do will gladly sacrifice the low flash storage memory that is available today to accomodate ultimate sound quality and for the one's that cannot, great they will get more song's out of that 8,16 or 32gb player.

But unfortunetly it does not sort out the original issue of this thread which is Apple lack of technical know how or oversight somewhere along the line in development (do they test there players before going live!) with their own codec.
It is not been helped by the lack of no information from Apple, which it would ne nice at least for them to hold their hand's up and say yeah, we know there is a slight technical issue guy's & girls but we are working in on x,y & z. So at least everyone is content they are at least dealing with the problem and trying to resolve the issue.

Me, personally after much listening between 320kps to wav files can hear a differnce using a pair of Shire E530's and prefer lossless which i why when i got my first Ipod thet Apple's lossless would save some space whilst not comprimising on sound quality.

If it was not for Sony having small flash memory currenlty i would of stuck with my A818 which sounded subjectivley better than the "Touch" and in recent light of this went out and got a Cowon D2 which despite not been as desirable and lack of wifi feature's with various application's this player is again a better sounding machine than the "touch" and i can only get the impression from my first week with a "touch" it is trying to be all singing all dancing short of an i-phone that it has forgotten to be a dedicated music player (my two cent's anyway).

Don't get me wrong the "touch" still sound's relatively good and i love the app's and touch screen, but the ipod could be so much better i feel and after ignoring ipods since they came out the first on ei get has a techincial issue with it's own software!

Let's just hope it is software curiable and will come out in a early 2.3 update?

Sorry for long winded post, get carried away!, just trying to explain to all you good folk having difference of opinion on the subject that it is all subjective opinions and telling a lossless fan that trying 320kps is not going to make them content, after all Apple are not going to say that to their customer's after paying £290 for it! It is down to them to patch their own problem they have caused.

All enjoy the music out there without skipping! 🙂

Wow! I've had my iTouch for 1 year this Christmas and was very satisfied until I began encountering problems upgrading the software. This fall I upgraded to 1. something and could never use the machine again. I sent it in and it was replaced (was not clear if a new machine or refurbished). Tried to upgrade to 2.0 and again the installation stalled. Sent in the "new" machine and it was sent back without a diagnosis (no issues--2.1 installed). Today I bit the bullet and tried to install 2.2 (what was I thinking????). Have been stalled on the "verifying updated iPod software for > 1 hour. If this doesn't resolve overnight, I will again be left with a machine that will not function at all.

Because the year of warranty is soon up, just spent ~$55 on an extended warranty. I guess I will be sending this unit back again.

Please...anyone else having problems such as this? The "contact us" on the apple.com website just gives the run around. Customer no service at it's best. Very disappointing.

Blah. This was the first thing I noticed and it really bothers me. Please fix this Apple!

All of my imported music is in Apple Lossless. I really don't care to reimport all of my CDs again to a lesser format, since I tend to here a digital oscillation in the background and some of the subtleties that I can here with Apple Lossless or when listening to the CD get stripped away.

Does anyone know why Apple removed the 320 option from AAC? I was going to import a few of my favorite CDs to this format as a compromise, but only 256 is available now with the newer version of iTunes.

I was going to try AIFF, since that's the CDs native format, but I read that it still causes skipping and then there's the extra space required to store it.

Granted, everyone has their own tolerance for what constitutes acceptable sound from audio equipment. I own a number of iPods, and each model has it's own distinctive sound qualities. To my ear, the Touch is the 3rd best sounding of the models that I own--there is FAR more difference in sound characteristics between models (to MY ear) than there is between lossless and 320. I quite frankly am disappointed in the sound quality of the Touch. My 2nd Gen Nano is clearly my second favorite model, just behind my 4th Gen iPod. The shuffle is at the bottom of the list, but that doesn't stop me from using it often, as it's a handy little devil, being so small. I once thought I'd never be satisfied with an MP3 player of any type as I'm one of those picky audiophile types. 🙂 At some point, I decided iPods are "good enough" for me to thoroughly enjoy the convenience of all my favorite music being available in the palm of my hand. Long live the iPod!! 🙂
