Firmware 2.2 - Apple Lossless Still Skips

Really disappointed after applying firmware 2.2 that the 2G iPod Touch still skips when playing apple lossless while screen is off.

glad I stumbled across this thread. I was wondering what was going on with the recent lossless files I made and was listening to on my iPod Touch 2g 32gb. I hope this error gets fixed.

You can--just rip cd's using lossless codec and then select them all and convert them to whatever you want. It's a simple matter to select either type of music files and put them into a playlist or even move them to another iTunes library. It's NOT that big a deal, other than the fact it will take many hours to convert thousands of songs from one format to another, but iTunes can do it while you are doing something else. I've got stereo rips, and mono songs on my ipod because I'm deaf in one ear. That way I can play the stereo files from my laptop to our home music system and listen with headphones to my mono files on my ipods. A benefit of mono files is they are 1/2 the size of stereo files of the same bit rate.

I'm not sure what would be good to convert to. I've always felt VBR sounded good, but it seems you want to rip with a LAME encoder, and I'm not too familiar with how to go about using that.

I too am confounded by this, as the difference to me in audio quality between 320 and lossless is not subtle; hence all my library is lossless. But with the screen asleep, skips every 1 minute or so. Must be fixed or I will just keep trading in my 32GB (hopelessly, fix-wise, of course) just to get their attention. My first Apple product since the 80's and this happens!

I agree with you there, i to do hear the difference when listening to lossless against compressed music even when it is at 320 bps, a lot of people say they do not hear the difference, but i suppose not everyone has the same level of hearing, too much wax! or not good enough headphones to get the detail to come through. Personally i am currently using either Shure E530's or my new Sennhieser EI8's which sound different but as good as the 530's.

This was my first Apple and to be honest, i am dissapointed by the sound quality even in wav (which even though eating up more memory, is what i am having to use until the Apple lossless is sorted out) and to be honest wished for the sake of not having a fancy touch screen that has wi-fi connection with those application's stuck with the far superior sound quality of a Sony, but have now gone over to a Cowon D2 which sounds even better than the Sony's and if you can live without the wifi and app's, Cowon have just brought out their version of the "Touch" called the S9.

I am not prepared aftr spending £280 to wait for Apple incapability to sort out a problem with their own hardware/software which quite frankly you do not see other manufacturer's bringing out partially working player's.

It make's you wonder how good Apple's Q.A. & R&D teams are if this has slipped through the net, how stringent is their testing of a product? how comes it has never been caught at any of the stage's before going live (into production and making retail outlet's)? and why is there no swift response to solving the problem as apparently there has been one, maybe two firmware download's since this problem came about, and has not been resolved on them firmwares.

Sorry Apple, until you can make a player that sound's above average and has better sound option's than current and is bug free, which is not to much to ask for when paying £280 for a portable player i will stick with the make's that know how to make these thing's properly, all be it, i will miss the touch screen with wi-fi and app's but at the end of the day, priority has to be sound quality and reliability - You fail on that Apple, if your listening that is?

Hey guys. I've been having this same problem with my 32 gig iPod Touch 2g, and it really is quite frustrating; there is, however, a temporary solution for the time being. Apple definitely needs to fix this problem, but I found some stuff online that might be helpful.

First off, the issue is with the software, not the hardware, so don't go out and replace/exchange your Touch just yet. The Touch only skips when screen goes off, or when it "auto-locks."

That said, the temporary solution is quite simple: from your iPod's home screen, select "Settings", then "General", then "Auto-Lock", then choose "Never". This prevents the screen from ever turning itself off, and your Lossless files will stop skipping.

Now, doing this does tend to burn through the battery much more quickly. So it's definitely a temporary solution. That said, I've done this and all my Lossless files have been playing flawlessly so far, so if battery life is not a huge issue, this works great.

Hope this helps!
