iPod restore error (14)

A few weeks ago my ipod(8GB) said i was using about 4gig in "other" i deleted all my apps and it still didnt go down, so i clicked restore and update, my ipod updated however since then has been in "recovery mode."

When trying to restore I get the following message:
+The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)+

The ipod screen displays a picture of iTunes symbol with the usb cable arrowing towards it.

i have tried using a different computer(also windows xp), using a different usb, holding down home button and on/off button aswell as reinstalling itunes and none of these have worked.

I am having the same problem with my ipod - I have now sent my ipod away for service - didn't want to. I was sure it was a software error but as my ipod wouldn't restore - I had no option but to send it away. Apple says they have not heard of the problem and were no help other than to give me the name of a service person. If it is software related, I have to pay and this is so unfair as I have done everything I can to fix the problem. Software issues should be covered in Apple protection plan as it is their software we are using to upgrade our ipods. Could you give me the exact name of the file you used to fix your ipod. I have done a search but can't find it. Thank you.

Here are the exact file names:

iPod1,1 2.2_5G77Restore.ipsw
iPod1,1 2.1_5F137Restore.ipsw
iPod1,1 2.0_5A347Restore.ipsw
iPod1,1 2.0.2_5C1Restore.ipsw
iPod1,1 2.0.1_5B108Restore.ipsw
iPod1,1 1.1.4_4A102Restore.ipsw
iPod1,1 1.1.3_4A93Restore.ipsw
iPod1,1 1.1.2_3B48bRestore.ipsw

As you can see there are various versions in my folder that correspond to the various updates I had done.

Thank you for your reply. I have sent my iPod to have it checked to see what the problem is. I cannot even restore it so it had to be sent away. My problem is, if it is a software issue, which is not covered by warranty, how do I ever get it to sync on either of my two computers??? What is wrong with my computers that has caused this problem? I have followed every step listed in this forum and still I cannot sync the ipod. The only step I haven't taken is to re-install Windows which I don't know how to do. I would love someone from Apple to help.

Thank you very much for your info - it certainly has helped me. I got a brand new replacement ipod touch from Apple and as it had the very earliest software on it, I was asked if I wanted to update and without thinking I clicked yes and my new ipod was given the dreaded 2.2.1 update and could not be restored!!! I remembered the info you gave and I selected a restore from way back and now my iPod is fine. The only problem I have now is to get it back to the update just before the last one as many of my apps won't work. There seems to be a problem with this latest update at least on some of the ipods. Can you tell me the name of the update before 2.2.1? Once again thank you.

IT WORKED. I succesfully restored back to the 2.2 version.

I have tried to get out of the error 14 loop for a week. It is stunning that Apple has not acknowledged the issue here.

I have never seen the shift-restore button search for file documented anywhere. It works in XP as well as Vista.

Also, if you are using XP the file you need to restore to is in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

For people who haven't solved this problem yet, PLEASE use the method that Ben has devised. It is flawless. Also after a restore, *DO NOT UPDATE* UNTIL NOTIFIED THAT IT IS SAFE. For people who do not have the restore file for their iPod Touch, try searching Google for its exact name and file download. If all has failed, you may contact me on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and I would gladly send you my restore file. I cannot guarantee that I can be online or at the computer 24/7. If I receive enough messages from those who need the file, I will upload it onto a hosting site and post the link on this thread.

As DJ Coffee stated, Ben's method works perfectly.

For users with Mac hardware, I was able to duplicate Ben's steps, the only difference being 1) that I held down the Option key when clicking "restore"
and 2) the restore files are located here:

(yourharddrivename)/(youradminusername)/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates

i used a restore file called "iPod1,1 2.2_5G77Restore.ipsw"

Good Night, and Good Luck!

I have got the same problem. I was restoring the iPod to 2.2.1 and it got stuck in recovery mode. I have tried using a different computer (including Windows XP), different cable, restarting the computer, and updating the iTunes software. Now my warranty for the iPod is up so I cant get a new one... Does anyone know what to do? I have an ipod that does not work and no warranty. I didn't jailbreak it either.d What should I do?
