Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter creates jumpy mouse cursor

I just got the new Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter. It works fine visually on my 30 inch Cinema HD display, but now my mouse cursor is jumpy. Every few seconds as I drag my mouse, the cursor jumps 5-10 inches, making it hard and frustrating to use.

I tried swapping out mice (external Microsoft USB mouse, both wired and wireless), downloading a new mouse driver, turning off airport, resetting parameter ram, and powering the cable via a USB port other than the computer, but the problem persists. I don't see this when the computer is plugged into a 24 inch monitor. So either it's the cable or the computer trying to drive 2560x1600.

The executive relations and tech people at Apple I've been working with closely for the past month on this issue emailed to tell me about this patch. When I emailed both to tell them the problems still remain (for me, when running Quicktime or iTunes), one of them called me back and left a message to the effect of "Our lead Engineer is surprised to hear that I am still having problems after applying this update."

I'm tired of working for free as their tech support. The fix was released to specifically to address the mouse cursor issue and frame rate issues. It's infuriating that it doesn't fulfill 50% of it's purpose.

It's like having a mechanic "fix" your car's non-responsive steering wheel, only to find the problem returns when you turn on your headlights.

I struggle to see how, with proper testing, they would release two updates (10.5.6 and the NVIDIA update) with such an effect.

Just picked up my new MBP 2.53 and connected to 30"only to experience what everyone here is saying - the mouse jumps. Took me a day or two to realize the problem.

I think I've found an interim solution. I'm using the new Apple keyboard and plug my MightyMouse into it. I removed mouse from keyboard and plugged in to 30" Cinema and the problem seems to be solved.

I didn't see where anyone else tried this but would love to know if it makes any difference to you guys. This has been an annoying issue and should never have existed.

Well, I just refunded everything.. Four months after I bought the laptop and still no solution. I don't care about it anymore... no more macbook for me and I wont ever get one until they decide to fix this problem (which they could easily do for non-Apple displays by providing a full-size Displayport cable).

When I plugged my laptop into their 30" display and their own adapter in-store, instead of the mouse jumping the screen would actually lose signal... was quite amusing...

The genius guy at the apple store was much more helpful than the 'Customer Relations' guys over the phone who never returned my calls. I actually had to get Fair Trading involved which probably helped to push my refund through. I wouldn't hold my breath for a solution though as it looks like it may be a hardware issue.

Sorry, I have posteed my solution for this problem in the wrong thread earlier. Here is what has solved the problem with the jerky mouse behaviour:

1) The problem is software, not hardware. I can reproduce that the jerky mouse behaviour is gone when the system is 10.5.5 - and it is there when I install 10.5.6.

2) The problem does show up on the brand new iMac9,1, Boot-ROM-Version: IM91.008D.B00; SMC Version: 1.37f3, too!

I have solved the problem on my MacBook 15" unibody AND on my iMac9,1 by installing system 10.5.5 (came along with the MacBook) and applying the patch "MacBookMacBookProSU1.2.dmg". I zapped the PRAM and connected the 30" Dell. Problems gone.

If you are googling for the installer "MacBookMacBookProSU1.2.dmg" you have to follow some threads of the forums which Apple probably does not want me to mention here. The installer is still out there and it is worth to search for - thats all what I can tell you about.

I still cannot believe that the solution to this problem make me bound to system 10.5.5 which does not allow installation of latest security patches.

Apple - this is a shame!

add me to the growing list.

Just bought a brand new Mac Mini to work with ACD 30" – Apple Store told me there had been an issue but it was fixed by software update.

Not true.

Now they want me to bring the entire rig to the Genius Bar to show them – but I think this would be a CWOT if they haven't even bothered to read the discussions threads, or indeed the comments on the product page.

Similar case to crunchyk9. I have an HP monitor (w2207, 1680x1200) and when I connect to it via mini displayport to DVI (single-link), I too see the mouse skipping. As soon as I unplug the adapter, the skipping/jumping goes away. It doesn't matter which video card I'm using. As soon as I unplug the adapter, the skipping stops. I don't see any jumping when I plug in using the VGA adapter.
