iPhone restarts when plugged into computer.

Having the same problem.

Mainly happens to me if i sync the iphone then remove it then sync it again a few minutes later.

I think its a pc problem sending some sort of weird signal to the iphone, cos if i restart the pc after every sync the problem does nto seem to happen .

When you say the iPhone isn't running, does this mean it is powered off when plugged in?

If so, an iPhone that is powered off will power on when plugged into a power source - with a USB port on your computer or when connected to the wall charger.

If you want the iPhone off when being charged, you need to power the iPhone off after being plugged in.

No I have the phone on when I plug it in. The green glowing battery shows up, then switches to the apple logo and it reboots.

It will also reboot my phone if it's plugged in when I restart my computer.

I've tried resetting the phone several times because of this problem, but then it still continues.

Since an iPhone reset has not resolved it, have you also tried restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup and if no change after that, restoring your iPhone as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup?

If so with no change, time to give AppleCare a call at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

I'm also having the very same problem. Plug in the iPhone, get the green battery, then the screen blacks out and I get the white apple and the phone proceeds to reset. Obviously, iTunes doesn't see the iPhone at all during this time.

Once the iPhone reboots everything is fine, but honestly it's pretty annoying. Can't think of anything I've done or changed recently that could have brought this one, but it has been happening consistently (read: EVERY time I plug the phone in). I've tried reboots, resets, restores, and even different cables. No luck.

I'm having similar issues, but only 1 in 5 times.

So far, it seems that it properly syncs every time and there doesn't seem to be any other side-effects.

My only thought is that it has something to do with static discharge. I don't notice any, but it wouldn't need to be very big.

Same problem here, I've been expereincing iPhone reboots every time it's plugged into a USB connection to either my Mac or my PC. It doesn't reboot when plugged into the AC wall charger. It's been happening since 2.2 and wasn't cleared up with 2.1.

It looks like my dock connector plug is slightly askew inside the body of the iPhone, cord plugs have a very slight angle when they plug into the iPhone. The left side of the plug is slightly further away from the body of the iPhone. Might be a short in the connector.

Hi, I'm having the same problem : when I plug my iPhone on my PC, it starts launching iTunes and reboot (apple logo).
Then it does a proper sync.

This isn't a critical issue, but it's quite annying !

I to have this issue with 2.2.1. Interestingly, I never had this issue with my original phone running 2.2.1, but had to swap it do to it no longer taking a charge. The phone I received after the swap did this the first time I plugged it into my computer when I got home. I did a full restore and it rebooted again during the restore. I finally got the restore to work and then it rebooted about 1/8 times I plugged it into my computer. I finally gave up and Apple swapped it again. My new phone is doing the same thing. I thought it was my computer with the original replacement which was doing this, so I did a clean install of OS 10.5 on an external HD, but the issue persisted. I also tried my iPod Touch's USB cable and that has not helped. I have tried both USB ports with no change either. Not sure that this adds much, but I just find it very odd that my original phone running 2.2.1 never had this problem.

Mine reboots 75% time when plugged into PC (XP), doesn't when plugged into outlet, Mac, any Linux server, or different XP. I'm kinda sure it started occurring ever since iTunes was installed on the XP. Have you all tried a different computer to see if behavior is different?

I too have been experiencing the same problem recently. It probably started about a week ago and it happens almost every time when my iphone 3G 16gig 2.2.1 is connected to my macbook pro (OSX 10.5.6). I wonder if it could be caused by a 3rd party app...

I'd like to chime in that I've started having this problem too.

My previous 3G was working fine, but a physical defect prompted me to swap it. The replacement I got wouldn't restore, or sync or anything - plugging in into the USB gave it the white screen. So I swapped it again.

At first the new one seemed perfect, but now I get random restarts when I plug into into my MacBook. Very annoying, and I hope I'm not wrecking the phone or anything. I'm always starting to suspect the MacBook (13" aluminum, Nov 2008) ...

Im having the same exact problem.

I have only noticed this problem since I upgraded to 2.2.1

This and the 'battery always full' issue seem to be two of the new features added in 2.2.1

I too have only noticed this problem since upgrading my original (not 3g) iPhone to 2.2.1. It is really annoying. I've considered down-grading to 2.2.
