clicking sound and rainbow wheel

My MacBook has recently been slowing down. I have started to hear a clicking sound and I see a rainbow wheel as the computer is "thinking". I have been reading some discussions and have done a few things....such as ...I have downloaded smart reporter........when I check it, it indicates the below info:

**2008-12-26 23:05:01.694 SMARTReporter[85] Drive: 'ST980811AS (Macintosh HD | 5RL00HHF | disk0)' Status: SMARTOK (S.M.A.R.T. condition not exceeded, drive OK)**

one individual advised another person having the same difficulties to check their console....when I check mine it indicates the below info:

Hi Brenda,

Welcome to Apple Discussions. I take it you've copied an excerpt from the system.log? What are you doing when this log file is being appended? Having just a snap shot of a log file without knowing exactly what the machine is doing or what else is running/installed makes a proper diagnosis very difficult.

When you say your computer is 'slowing down' can you elaborate? What are you doing? What does Activity Monitor look like when the sluggishness occurs? How much RAM does the system have? How much is in use / available when the sluggishness occurs? Is re-produceable on demand? Is it limited to a specific application? Any software updates recently? Any applications downloaded/installed/deleted recently?

Thanks so much for answering my question! I will try to answer the questions you have asked me. The info I copied above was from the console log....the only thing going on when I copied it was that I was online.......

The slowdown on the computer happens when I'm opening the internet or the internet is transferring between sites.........it is slow only when I'm on the internet. In the beginning.....it happened only when I opened the internet up first thing in the morning......now it seems to happen any time during the day....it is less likely to happen the longer I am on the internet........hmmmm Activity Monitor....what does it look like? I'm not sure what to look for.....I know how to find it......all I see are programs and some stuff jumping around?????

Ok......so sorry I am a bit computer illiterate.....lol....RAMS...does this answer the question - Space Utilized = 26.98 GB Space Free 47.23 GB .......total GB = 74.21......also.......I copied this....does this help any:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB21.00A5.B07
SMC Version: 1.17f0
Serial Number: W87257L3YA2
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

......as far as how much is in use/available when the sluggishness occurs.............I will try to remember to look at that the next time.........nope.....it's not reproduceable on demand........but it's pretty predictable in that it happens mainly in the beginning when I open the internet.....it's starting to get worse though and will happen while having the internet open. It is limited only to when I have Safari open...............The last software update was about the middle of December......I think it was happening before that.......I did download "OpenOffice.org" .....I hate to say this...but, I can't remember if it was happening when I before or after I did that.....it might have............

does that help any? Are there any other questions I can answer....the other thing is usually I only have one application open at the same time.....so, when Safari is open.....and the internet is slow.....there are no other applications open......

thanks so very very much for your help!!!!!

Hi Brenda,

So with only Safari open that's what the breakdown looks like on Activity Monitor? There's definitely something afoot, there's no way that (just) Safari should be consuming that much resources.

Let's try this... let's make a new user and see if anything changes. Are you familiar with how to do that? Go to System Preferences > Accounts. Click on the padlock at the bottom and it'll prompt for a password. Click the "+" sign and proceed to make a new administrator account. Once that's done, go ahead and log out and log in as the new user.

Once in the new user, go ahead and just browse around on the Internet as you normally would do. Don't download, install, update anything and report your findings.

Bummer.........so sorry it has taken me so long to get back......I wanted to give it time to see how it reacted......the first couple of days into creating a new profile, it was doing great.....I almost emailed you back that my problem was solved......however, it started doing the same thing the other profile was doing....rainbow wheel, clicking and slow down on the internet.......again, the only time I notice it is when i'm on the internet....hmmmm

I created the new profile and didn't download anything.....as you said.....you said to report my findings......is there any particular numbers or info I could give you that would help?

thanks again for your help!

Brenda,

My next steps were with the new user to see if the issue was user specific or system wide. The fact that the issue is occurring in the new user as well, would lead me to believe that the issue is system wide. Does the sluggishness occur outside of Safari, ever? Like if you're typing a word document or composing an email?

Now comes "isolation" to the specific application or to the entire OS. If necessary we can delete and reinstall Safari, versus pursuing an Archive & Install right away.

You know.....as I think of it.....the only other things we use on this laptop is a game I play....not on the internet and OpenOfffice.org .......it's rare that I use the OpenOffice.org program either.....it's also possible the problems started ocuring after I downloaded that program .....but can't be certain ........I have been playing around with the game and the office program.....and have found no problems at all on them.....just safari.....we also have foxfire......I haven't tried to use that lately to see if the slowdown happens on it too. So........the only place I have had slowdowns is on Safari.....I will try foxfire and see if I have the same problems.....I don't know if it's taking up a lot of space having foxfire and safari....only had both b/c I was trying to watch something that said I needed foxfire....but I can get rid of both and start over with safari if you think that is better.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something here. I apologize if that's the case.

To eliminate the internet connection itself as part of the issue, do the speedtest at this website:
http://www.speedtest.net/

and post the results here.

Once the website is loaded, just click the Yellow Pyramid and wait for the test to finish.

If your connection is slow that may be part of your problem.

I copied this from my console last night......please forgive me if it's way too much info.......however, one of the things I keep seeing throughout it constantly is this sentence.....it seems to be consistent and it seems to refer to the Safari connection.....oh another thing.....the clicking noise starts up as soon as I open my laptop......it goes away after awhile.......the rainbow wheel is only when I'm on the internet....ok......here is the repetitive note I seem to see on my console log:

The console messages seem to indicate that your Safari application is corrupted. Try downloading and reinstalling Safari.

The clicking and slow disk response may imply a hard disk problem, including maybe an event which corrupted Safari. Run Disk Utility, and do a Verify Disk (not to be confused with Verify Permissions). If it shows errors and says disk needs repair, run Disk Utility from your OS X install disk and click on Repair Disk.
