clicking sound and rainbow wheel

My MacBook has recently been slowing down. I have started to hear a clicking sound and I see a rainbow wheel as the computer is "thinking". I have been reading some discussions and have done a few things....such as ...I have downloaded smart reporter........when I check it, it indicates the below info:

You all are such a huge help.....teaching me about my system....I didn't realize there was so many helpful tools on my macbook.....ok.....I ran the verify disk from my disk utility.....I think the message it is giving me is that everything is ok.....here is the info it gave me:

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.

Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.

so, I think that is good news........the clicking almost sounds like someone tapping their fingernails on a desk.....not loud and not long.....maybe five seconds and then goes away.....comes back every once in awhile........so, I guess the next thing is to take safari off this computer and download it again........any chance you could walk me through that???? also........do I need to take the foxfire off too?

The output from Disk Utility indicates that it thinks your disk is fine.

To reinstall Safari:

1. Download it (the Tiger version) from here: http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
2. When it finishes downloading the dmg file, double click on it to mount the disk image. A window will open, showing the installer pkg file.
3. Double-click on the pkg file to start the installer. Follow the instructions.

If this is the idle click you are talking about there are countless people with the same problem me included. The theory is that it is an overaggressive power saving strategy by the OS to park the drive head in addition to the sudden motion sensor parking the head to prevent HDD damage.

so...it sounds as if the clicking is probably ok then......? It is something that came on a year and a half after I bought the computer......

the rainbow wheel continues to be a problem.......in fact trying to type this sentence....every fourth word, the rainbow comes on and delays me typing the sentence. I downloaded Safari again as the individual above suggested.....I used their link....the question I have also...is do I need to get rid of the other Safari and Firefox.....if the problem is that the Safari is taking up too much memory? The next thing I am going to do is to take it to my sisters house....I believe that was suggested above.......and see if it's my connection and if the problem still exists at her house. I have a PC also.........the PC doesn't have any connection problems at all.....the internet comes on quickly.

I had to actually turn the computer off this morning and restart it.......the internet was stuck in perpetual rainbow wheel mode.........also.......the rainbow wheel is on turning when I'm on the internet......I have a game I play on my computer.......no problems with it then. I don't have a lot of stuff on my computer........maybe about 15 pictures.........two games......I mainly use the laptop for internet use.

Last thing..........the rainbow wheel seems to be less of a problem the longer I am on the internet...like right now.......no rainbow wheel...........the main problems is the very beginning.....and sometimes going between sites........

If you have a way to back up your information and do an erase and install of your system that might help to see if that fixes the problem.

I tried to download the SpeedUpMyPC 3 site you gave me.....the sucky thing is that when I try to open it...it goes to the game Big Bang that was on my computer when I bought it....this has been a problem on and off for me......I can download most things.....some things ....when I try to open the download it takes me right into my Big Bang game......one I'd LOVE to get rid of!!!! I'm not sure how to delete applications off of my MacBook.

Also.....I'm at my sisters home........the internet is running better....however.......new problems are cropping up........no more clicking.....however........if I turn my computer off and try to turn it back on.......it is really, really, really, really slow......I look at a blue sreen for a long time......so, I'm wondering if it's going past the internet now......wonder if I have a virus.

There is not a lot of stuff on my computer.......so I'm having a hard time wondering why it's so slow......not many pics.....maybe 10 at the most......not a lot of apps.

bummer...nix that last post.....i took the computer to my sisters to see if it was the internet connection......it was doing great the first two times i took it from start up.......the third time it was just as slow.....so lots of rainbow wheel time going....still wondering why my download trial.....for the speed test automatically takes me to my bigbang game....can't download the speed test
