Logic dropping MIDI OUT during a track

Running Logic 8 on a Macbook Pro for live performance. 98% of the time it's working very nicely, but have had a couple of instances where the MIDI info being sent to external processors and lighting controllers is being 'dropped'

There are a couple of additional Audio tracks (software instruments bounced to WAVs) which continue to run and no error message comes up... it just seems that the MIDI instructions stop being transmitted. MIDI IN still stays in operation as Superior Drummer keeps being triggered by the kit without missing a beat

All returns to normal on opening the next song (calling up the next song via OnStage does involve Logic being closed and re-opened with the next song then ready to go) and there's no need to reset anything else

This has happened on two different MIDI interfaces - first time on a USB Edirol UM-1 and second time on a Saffire Pro 40 via FW400, so that would indicate it's not an external hardward issue and with the Logic 'reboot', it would appear to be a software problem

Is this a known issue..?

Hi Erik.... I've looked at the activity monitor but i don't really know what to look for... There's lots of active process constantly changing... The following seem to be active all the time:

One thing to check...

In "System Preferences" Under Accounts (your user account) see if anything is listed under "Login Items".

Mine is empty, the less junk running in the background the better.

Also, and it may not be a problem but why is "Universal Access App" running on your system, is there something there you need?

Hi Pancentre....

In My account - Login items... i have the following. iTunesHelper (Application)

To delete this do i just HIDE them?
Or do you think i need this to be running.

With my problem seem to be happening every 60 mins could it be that MacBooks pro search for upgrades of do some kind of clean up every 60 mins.
I've gone through my macbook pro with a fine tooth-comb and turn off any kind of automatic option.

Cheers

If you don't have Time Machine on your Mac then it has done its job -- you have been transported back in time to the Pleistocene era of computing. You must now travel on foot to the south, and in about 3 days time you'll run into a codgy old Australopithecan named Brack who has a magic abacus that can help bring you back.

This is why I suggest that people downgrade to Tiger...

look under: System Preferences

Its backup software but like many things in Leopard, it assumes too much.

10.4.11 runs much better on this G5 but I now have 10.5.4 running pretty well and think it does a better job supporting both processors.

If Panther supported all my software I'd be running that, it was about twice as efficient as Leopard.

Pete

Time Machine automatically makes back ups of all the changing data on your machine so you can simply 'go back in time' and get it if you delete it or it gets corrupted etc. It does this every 60 minutes, that's what triggered the thought

However, I remember now that you're running an older system, so it's not that either!

Hi all,

I just thought I'd chip in here to add that I'm experiencing a very similar problem. I have a logic project consisting of audio tracks and MIDI program changes which are routed to a Max/MSP patch running on the same machine. The track is 10 mins long, and is looped. Inconsistently, but annoyingly frequently, Logic stops sending MIDI control messages to Max. Pausing and re-starting the Logic playback kicks the MIDI back into life. I've had this setup running for periods of up to 7 hours, and sometimes I get no drop-outs at all, but at other times the drop-out occurs after an hour or so. I'm using internal, software 'virtual' MIDI ports so it can't be a hardware problem. Max continues to respond to other MIDI commands even after Logic stops sending them. I'm using a little automation to control levels of the audio tracks, but only 10 MIDI control messages (no notes, control, sysex etc at all) in 10 minutes so it surely can't be 'overloading'.

I'm sorry I'm not offering any insight into the cause of the problem, but wanted to add my experience to the forum in case it helps anyone work out what's going on!

Thanks,

Tom

Hi.... I've now tried running my show at home on my Mac Pro and the same thing happens. It's as if after around 60/70 mins, midi stops been sent.
I'm starting to think it's a problem within Logic.
Does Logic automatically make backups every 60 mins or so, or does it check for updates. Or anything that could distract the midi from working. My mate has exactly the same set up as me (Midi interface, MacBook, Lighting controller) except he uses ProTools to run his live shows and he'd never encounter this problem

I'm going to upgrade my OS today to see if that makes any difference

Cheers

this happen only in one song???
logic is a MIDI bug free apps

Logic is capable to control virtually infinite number of MIDI channel!

I suggest to:
Delete or drag the logic.plist by exporting your Key commands

if this not solve the issue

try to mute that track that caused the issue with a new track with same channel and copy the object...

if the problem persist...
re-record the MIDI track

*Important check for MIDI cables and interferences!*

if... anything works... the Logic song is corrupted, so you need to open a new one and drag all tracks and settings!
