Application (Civ 4) won't launch

Hi, strangely (and frustratingly) Civ 4 suddenly won't launch for me; no error message, nothing, it just bounces a few times in the dock and stops. I've never had any problems before. I found a few similar threads here, and followed the advice there, but nothing seems to help. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program, I've verified that I have the latest software updates, and have repaired permissions (twice, once in safe mode). Not sure what else to do. I'm a relative mac newbie, so advice for dummies would be appreciated!

I have a MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2.2 GHz Intel processor, with 4 GB of RAM and 35 GB of free memory. Never had any similar problems, this just popped up out of the blue, and only seems to affect this one application. Thanks for any help, David

Great tip. Worked for me too. Did you then upgrade again to 7.5.5?

I have yet to be so brave. It's working with QT 7.3.1, and I'm reluctant to mess with it. I do get warnings from iTunes that I won't have this or that functionality without the upgrade to 7.5.5, but the quality of life has not been noticeably diminished without the upgrade.

I had no problems with OS X 10.4.11 and QT 7.6 running Civ IV 1.74 and Warlords 2.13 (the latest of both). Things ran fine for several weeks. I am now having the startup crashes (on both) when the image is loading (according to crash log) after installing the Security Update 2009-001 this morning. Perhaps it is not either but something that Software Update is doing wrong? I did repair permissions both before and after the update.

Hi, everyone. I came here because I have the same problem W/Civ on 10.4.11. I don't always play CivWarlords, so I don't know when it stopped working, but it has. I am going to try the QT downgrade and see if that works for me.

But I have a side question on what I thought was the problem for you guys, if you can tell me you have the same conditions I would be interested. I looked at all the Civ folders and found that many of the files are set to Graphics Converter ownership. Some were owned by a different Aspyr game. I had thought that was the problem and had reset/rebuilt Launch Services, used Onyx several times as well as repair disk/permissions, ran Disk Warrior, all to no avail. Those files are still owned by other applications. Anyone know if this is normal?

If Civ 4 is an Aspyr game, then it's probably not going to work again no matter what you do... unless you downgrade from the latest QuickTime update. This is a known issue that is causing mass problems with Aspyr games. Aspyr has a note about it posted on their website, and they have sent email replies to everyone who files bug reports with them.. saying they're working on resolving the problem. The same thing happened to me, only with Sims 2. The icon bounces in the dock a few times, vanishes, and never opens. So, you're probably out of luck for now... keep checking Aspyr's page for updates about what's going on as they look to fix the problem.

Also, for more on how the latest QuickTime update screwed a bunch of people's computers (almost exclusively Tiger users), read this thread:
