Up until yesterday my iPhone (Canada carrier = FIDO) was working perfectly. Now every time I try to sync it iTunes crashes. I have not changed anything - same computer same settins. The last app I updated was Air Sharing. A restore using the back-up option did not work and neither did a full restore without a back-up. I have completely reset and entered in all of my settings for networks, email etc. It is still not working.
Delete Air Sharing from iTunes on your Mac - or any free application that you have selected to be installed on your iPhone and re-download the application.
Try syncing again.
If iTunes still crashes, purchase a song from the iTunes store, or download a free song that is available for download, followed by syncing.
This is some DRM problem, and deleting/re-downloading a single app that is being transferred to your iPhone should resolve it.
I was experiencing the same, and after deleting and re-downloading an app from the App Store that is being transferred to my iPhone resolved it - I also purchased a song from the iTunes store, but this may not be required.
Unfortunately, it did not work. Itunes crashes when I try to sync music only, it crashes when I try to sync videos only, it crashes when I try to sync photos only& it crashes when I try and sync apps only. Even syncing 1 app at a time crashes iTunes. The app I was trying to sync shows up on my iPhone after the crash, but subsequent syncs cause the same crash.
Is there a chance that the recent update to iPhone are the cause?
I experienced the same last night. I could transfer a movie that I ripped from a DVD, and I could transfer photos from iPhoto, but when syncing music that includes DRM protection - even just my 25 most recently played playlist, syncing would get hung up on one song - usually after more than half the songs in the playlist had been transferred followed by iTunes crashing - which hasn't crashed on me once in over 3 years since I purchased my PB new.
I pulled out my Leopard install disk and ran DFA on my hard drive with no problems reported. I also repaired disk permissions for the heck of it with no change.
I deauthorized my Mac with iTunes followed by reauthorizing it with no change, but my Apple TV was resynced with iTunes no problem.
I even restored my iPhone as a new iPhone with no change.
Did a Google search for this and ended up deleting a free application from my iTunes library followed by redownloading the app. I was able to reinstall selected apps on my iPhone via the iTunes sync process after doing this. For the heck of it, I purchased 5 songs from the iTunes store which I had placed in my shopping cart a couple of weeks ago but had not purchased yet. I could transfer all selected iTunes content to my iPhone including movies and tv shows purchased from the iTunes store after doing so, and no iTunes crashing since, which has never crashed on me with any Mac up until last night.
Did you remove the application from your iPhone followed by deleting the application from the iTunes library on your computer followed by re-downloading the application from the iTunes store with iTunes on your computer and then reinstalling the app on your iPhone via the iTunes sync process?
This seemed to have resolved it for me, and I didn't delete any music. All I did was purchase and download some music purchased from the iTunes store which was already in my iTunes shopping cart - it was 5 songs. Syncing returned to normal for apps after what I did with a 3rd party app, so I purchased 5 songs from the iTunes store for good measure and syncing returned to normal for me.
Not a problem - as long as you are using the same iTunes account to re-download an app, you can re-download any purchased app without being charged again.
Give my instructions a try - it worked for me, and the same may work for you.
The redownloading apps trick worked for me. I was having the same problem with iTunes crashing on sync. I restored my iphone and then redownloaded some apps and they synced fine. I then started adding music & video back to the sync and they all went fine - no crashing of iTunes. I didn't re-buy any music or video. I haven't finished syncing everything yet but so far so good. Either Apple fixed the DRM problem or this fix works.

PS redownloading apps doesn't result in a re-charge
I have experienced a similar issue, which began after I upgraded to iTunes Plus. In addition, I experienced a greatly prolonged download of a rented movie for Apple TV the night before iPhone sync began crashing iTunes (iTunes unexpectedly quit). Then my nightmare began- 3 1/2 hours on the phone with AppleCare Tech Support immediately followed by 2 1/2 hours at the Genius Bar/Apple Store. None of the trained support specialists could identify or fix this issue. This actually ended up with them switching out my iPhone 3G for a new one and reinstalling Leopard on my MacBook Pro! Syncing iPhone would still crash iTunes! Unbelievable....
My case has received a lot of attention at Apple apparently. Several of the techs are working on this now. I have been assured that the engineers have been notified.
I took your advice tonight and I am now able to sync without receiving the iTunes quit unexpectedly error message. Here is all I did:
(note: I have a new iPhone and manually re-downloaded all 26 of my apps directly onto the iPhone. I don't know if this was really necessary to do, though).
1. Using iTunes on the Mac, I deleted one free app (Remote). I then "re-purchased" this free app from the iTunes Store via my computer.
2. Using iTunes on the Mac, I purchased one new song.
3. After disabling automatic syncing, I performed a sync of each area of content individually (Contacts, Calendars, Music, Photos, Apps). I actually disconnected and re-connected the iPhone each time (may not be necessary).
I was able to successfully perform a sync each time. I am now going back to set up MobileMe once again, since I am using a newly installed version of iTunes.
I will post again here if I learn of anything new from Apple.
Thanks to Allan's suggestions I solved the crashing problem by re-downloading the Apple Remote app after deleting it from iTunes and my iPhone.
I found that by making a back-up on my desktop of the all the Apps (Mobile Applications Folder inside the iTunes folder in Music) and deleting all the apps from iTunes that I could reimport them into iTunes and sync as a batch instead of one at time.
I am having the same issues. I re-installed itunes, restored the iPhone. This did help in preventing my iTunes from crashing once I connect the iPhone. However, now when I try to sync apps back onto my phone, iTunes crashes after each app synced. I tried removing a free app off the phone and iTunes and then download again and then sync to iPhone but no go. Any ideas on this? It is extremely frustrating trying to put apps back on my phone with iTunes crashing after each app.
I'm having exactly the same problem. I did a full restore of the iPhone, and was then able to sync everything BUT apps. As soon as I try to sync an app, iTunes dies after the sync is done. VERY frustrating. I've tried all the delete the app, redownload, etc. steps above - all to no avail.
Anyone else have any success? Any tips appreciated.
All I can say is wow......thought I was the only one, but apparently not. I have several macs and my "big mac" is an 8 core Mac Pro. I started experiencing the EXACT SAME ISSUE as previously stated by others. iTunes for Mac crashes as soon as any of my many ipod or iphone devices is connected. Have followed all tech support suggestions and spent nearly 5 cumulative hours on the phone with them with no luck. Finally stepped back when they wanted me to do a full operating system re-install which could really screw up video editing stuff which would take me 4-5 days to get re-installed and all set back up. In the middle of a video project and don't have time for that.
Unfortunately, the beauty of the Mac, everything connected is also apparently the Achilles heel here. Tech support said it was a Sync Services problem, another support person said it was an iTunes library rebuild is all that was needed to fix it, another had me re-install iTunes completely, still no fix. I came here, read the other folks' problem and exact same thing. I'm guessing there is either a DRM problem or iTunes account database / permission problem because HERE'S THE KICKER.........IT IS NOW DOING THE SAME THING ON MY MACBOOK PRO LAPTOP!!!!! I thought it was somehow connected to my recent install of the new iWork or iLife 09 versions, but I haven't installed either one on this particular laptop and am having the exact same issue! iTunes crashes when you try to sync ANY apple device.......iPod 160 gig, iPhone 16 gig, iPod touch 8 gig, Nano 8 gig, and now Apple TV.
One tech was trying to help and assumed it must be a device issue and sent me a return box for my son's new iPod touch to return it, however all devices were working absolutely fine, synched up great, then none of them would sync.
Now that I've followed all the other suggestions, am still in the same boat, now on 2 Macs out of the 4 here at the house, and I'm terrified to see what happens when I get to the office and touch the Macs there. I tried the delete app, then re-download. I do not use this laptop for much in the way of music, just a few dozen songs (vs. thousands on the big system) and a couple (like literally 2 episodes) of tv shows. I tried upgrading all few dozen songs on the laptop to iTunes plus, paid the fee, even that didn't work! Tried downloading a new app, restarted iTunes once it downloaded, did sync, then it crashed again. Tried purchasing a couple new songs, they downloaded fine, did synch trying 2 different Apple devices, both caused a crash.
Apple, I think there might be a little problem with your uber-cool stuff, could you maybe assign a couple folks to look at it from another perspective than "silly customer, you must have screwed up our perfect machine".......if this is happening on 2 unaffiliated machines, one of which has had no new software (other than updates from Apple of course) since the last version of iWork 08, there might be something to this little problem.
Any help from Apple here would be greatly appreciated as I suspect this is becoming a topic of conversation over at Apple support.
Here's the neat error log generated by the crash........have sent it probably 20 times to Apple, figured maybe there's a genius here who'd like to see it and can make sense of it. Looks the same on both machines giving me the error and wife just came in from the other room while I'm working on this and tells me she is having the same problem with her MacBook Pro and iPhone. Again, we do NOT share files or accounts between these computers, nor do we share iPods or iPhones between the devices.
