Airport Extreme Website block..

Guess I was wrong about cPanel, here is the response I got to your suggestion:

"On our servers we run hsphere control panel and it does not has security firewall. IPs can be banned on router level only as on windows servers we do not have firewall at all. We have double check the issue from our end and may assure you that there are no blocks against your IP address not on our network router.

Kindly check the issue once again with your ISP."

I did mention to them that this affects all the domains for that account, not just bocafallsweather. Appreciate your help, do you have any other suggestions?

Changing DNS servers (from Comcast to OpenDNS) solved the problem for me.

Changing to OpenDNS did not work for me.

This has got to be one of the stranger network-related threads I've seen.

I've had NAS issues with my AEBS, but nothing like what's been posted here.

I've been using the same AEBS for 3 or 4 years, with Comcast, in two different cities in the Chicago area.

I've never had a problem like you guys are.

I've had a VPN nailed up, 24/7, for that whole time. The same Cisco 871w has been sitting behind my AEBS, bangin' away day and night, going to both the same static IPs and names requiring DNS without fail. I also work at home and spend a lot of time going to my employer website outside the VPN.

If it's a software issue, I don't see why rebooting it wouldn't fix it. If you have to replace the hardware, yeah, sounding like an outside interface related issue. I don't think the AEBS supports MAC spoofing, but that would be a solution.

Sorry to hear you guys are having such problems. It can be maddening when you can't track it down.

I finally through in the towel and went out and got a new Linksys E4200 router. Neither Comcast or my ISP (IXWebhosting) ever helped me solve it... we'll see, but I only had this problem once I installed the AEBS a few months ago.

Just recieved this same error only on our buiness domain for my boss.

did a traceroute - it never gets past the ip of the airport (local IP)

all the sepeculation that its the ISP or website/cPanel (at least in my case) have no bearing.

I have been experiencing the same problem with a site that I own and manage hosted with NameCheap.com. I couldn't get to the site via browser or FTP when using my AE, although email worked fine and I was able to ping it.

I called NameCheap and it turned out my IP was indeed blocked for the following reason:

Failed SMTP AUTH login from 24.160.34.58 (US/United States/-): 5 in the last 300 secs

so it looks like mail in concert with my AE caused it, although mail wasn't affected (I use Google Apps for my email server).

Anyone know of anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

After having bought and installed a new Netgear router, everything worked fine.

For about 2 months.

Then, same problem.

I called my web guy and he said we were not blocking IPs with the software you said we could find in Cpanel.

He emailed the hosting company, gave them my IP address, and they did something on their end to solve the problem.

In this case, Vodahost (Texas) was the host, and my router could not access my domains, my emails and other domains on that same hosting account.

So, the problem was definitely the host/server. But the problem seems to have been embedded deeper than Cpanel, and not correctable by user.

Hopefully this is the last of this issue for me. It's cost me days of time and a new router.

I hope this post assists others as well.

FYI, I had not engaged any QoS settings when I set up the new Netgear router. I saw no need for them as I'm not a gamer or excessively high bandwidth user. Perhaps this would have prevented the problem from recurring, as you suggest.

This is an unfixable issue with AE. It is NOT a hosting OR ISP issue. Don't waste your time fiddling around with settings.

The only thing you can do is try to beg Apple for your money back - and/or purchase a non Apple router. Trust me.

My issues ended up being with the ISP. I seems they blocked the request from their router (modem) due to what they thought was possible SMTP spam.

if you can move it to a new network and not have the same issues, it probably isn't the AE.

UPDATE:

It seems I may have this issue again with my new router. The only sites that seem to not work are my CPanel, and my site. I am stumped. Thinking it probably relates to my host and CPanel processes.

I just don't get it.

If you read back a few posts, I actually explained what is likely causing the issue (it is not Cpanel related per say, but related to a plugin that many host are installing with Cpanel called ConfigServer & Firewall). By default, you can be permanently banned from your server and sites if you:

1. Failed login to your email 10 times within 5 minutes

2. Failed login to smtp 10 times within 5 minutes

You can be temporarily blocked if you:

1. Failed login via SSH 10 times with 5 minutes

2. Failed login via the Cpanel web address 10 times within 5 minutes

The problem that most of you are experiencing is due to the first two listed (failed login to email 10 times with 5 minutes). If you try but fail to login to your email 10 times within a 5 minute block, CSF will permanently ban your IP address as the default behavior.

FYI... since I installed the Linksys E4200, I have not had a single problem.

If you fall into my category, the problem will most likely persist. My new Linkysy router is now experiencing the same issue AE had. I just emailed host the feedback on ConfigServer & Firewall and asked them to modify.
