Airport Extreme Website block..

OK, I've got one for somebody smarter than me out there ( a lot i'm sure).
I have an airport extreme (n) and there is one particular website that I cannot access through the extreme, but if I pull the airport out and hook up directly to the cable modem I can get to this website. What gives? I get a warning like this:
Access Denied

You don't have permission to access "http://www.choicehotels.com/?" on this server.
Reference #18.72b1208.1234794491.13f1c1a

I went through earthlink and we determined it has to do with the airport..

Oh, the website is www.choicehotels.com

I have been able to access this up until about 3 weeks ago..

any helpful ideas?

Thanks

This is also happening with my wireless router which is a 2wire Gateway from AT&T using U-verse internet.

I cannot get on https://www.arbitersports.com, the website I need to work. Not sure what to do now, especially after 2hrs with AT&T's tech support who offered no help whatsoever. The arbitersports website will not work with my iMac or PC either, or any browser(Firefox, Safari, Chrome or IE). Can only pull it up on on my iPhone 4 when I cut off my home WiFi & use 3G.Every other website, I use, works. Frustrating to say the least..

Arbitersports was also working fine just a few days ago. My iMac Firefox Browser updated itself & then I cleared the cache, history & cookies, because it was running a little slow, & a couple days later, arbitersports will not work anymore.

Any ideas?

CSF (not CFS) isn't a plugin for Cpanel. It's something that is installed directly on the server. Depending on the version, it could have a plugin into Cpanel, but it doesn't have to be inside of Cpanel itself. Tell your host to check to see if you have a directory on your server called /etc/csf. If you do, then CSF is installed. Also, CSF is just one of several different programs (CSF is the most common). There is also APF and BFD that can do the exact same thing.

I had the same problem guys. I work on a website that is hosted by a isp for me. I actually have many sites. In the middle of editing it, I lose connection. I no longer can access it back. So I usally have to turn the route off for 2 hours and it resolves it, but this time I contacted the host and to my luck they found my ip banned for all their servers in their firewall. So I asked them to please not ban them and he said they put the range in. But either way, dunno why this is happening but it needs to stop or I am throwing away this airport extreme.

Tezgno, on page 7.

First, the issue isn't necessarily the AEBS, although it is apart of the problem. What is actually happening here is that you are being blocked by the site, not the other way around. Specifically, your IP address is being "banned" by the site in question (in some cases, temporarily, in others, more permanently). Issues like these are hard to diagnose because most people troubleshoot the issue by unplugging their router, plugging their computer straight into the modem, and then realizing that the issue is gone. Likewise, many people take their routers (in this case, AEBS) to Apple, plug it in, and it starts to work as well. So, let's break this into two parts and address the problem first and why it is happening.

This was the Solution for me. Thank You very much for your post. I initially talked to bluehost.com and let them know that my airport extreme was being banned from connecting to a specific domian. They told me that it was not banned. After chasing my tail around, dealing with tech support with ISP, and running my own ping tests. I took this post back to the domain host (bluehost) and they put me through to tier 3 support. I was quickly removed from the ban list..

Your post was extremely helpfull, and gave me the infomation that i needed to go back to bluehost and get to the root of the problem.

I have submitted a support ticket with them with hopes that this will save many other from running out to replace an airport extreme that isn't broken.

Likewise, Tezgno's explanations made the most sense. Your AE isn't broken, you just need to either a) get unblocked by the offending host or b) get yourself a new IP address. Five minutes with my DSL modem and router unplugged, plugged back in and was issued a new dynamic IP, and my problem was resolved. Could it happen again? Yes. But I've got a solution.

I am failing to understand Tezgno's explanation on new IP address.

Here is what I have tried and it still fails.

1) Unplug modem and AEBS for about 30 mins and than replug it back my modem public IP was same as it was earlier some how it didn't give me a new IP strange but that's what my ISP choosen to provide me with

Plug modem into router and try to surf website no luck.

Unplug router and plug cable directly into laptop just works. Mind you i still have th same public IP so I can easily eliminate any blocking happening at the server end.

2) Is my nated IP and issue well I changed my LAP IP range from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.10.0 end result still the same I can't access that particular website.

So there is something definetely going on AEBS which is not letting through this website. If anyone have got any other directions / solution to the problem would be happy to try out as this have become annoying i have to keep on disabling wifi on my iPHone even at home in order to receive emails from my mail server 😟

thanks in advance

The IP address from your ISP is associated with your devices MAC address. So, unplugging your router and plugging it in 30 minutes later is going to give you the exact same IP address. However, when you plug in your laptop, which has a completely different MAC address, your modem will assign it a new IP. You can easily see this happen by plugging in your router, going to Google, and typing in "what is my IP address". Google will show you what your IP is. Then, unplug the modem and router and plug straight into the modem from your laptop and repeat. You will then notice that you will have a different IP address altogether. The only way that both your laptop and router get the exact same IP address is if your modem is also a router (such as FiOS or U-verse). In those cases, both devices would get the same address. However, in cases like that, you generally would not be using an AEBS.

Hi. My problem seems to have something in common, and after a couple days, I still don't get it...

I'm using airport express 802.11g, and mac mail (OSX 10.7.4).

Last week it just stops sending emails from one of the server providers i use (dreamhost).

I'd already tried everything...reseting, creating new mail accounts, changing, repairing permissions, restarts and so on...

what I find out:

1. if I plug the ethernet cable, it works

2. when using mail over wifi/airport, the 'send' works for @hotmail, @gmail...but doesn't work for my other server emails

3. even thou, if I try to check emails using my server webmail, it works!

4, receiving emails works perfect

5. even when trying the wifi over my iphone, it doesn't send either.

weird!

but it's been days I've been trying to find out what is going on, and no clue!

I hope someone could help me!

it used to work just perfect, but...

thks

paulo.

Tezgno,

Thank you SO MUCH for you detailed explanation (page 7). After hours and hours of support discussions over the period of a month or more, to no avail, I copy-pasted this post and some of your other explanations after this one, and submitted a formal support ticket to my web hosting provider (Bluehost).

Over the course of that month, I talked to:

  • • my webhost (Bluehost)
  • • my internet service provider (Shaw), and
  • • Apple support techs

Everyone said it was somebody else's issue. The fact that I could access my websites, CPanel, email, webmail etc. from any internet access point except via my AEBS wifi eventually led everyone to point their fingers at my hardware, but full-on system/hardware checks that came up completely clean, and factory default reboots (etc etc etc) didn't solve it, either. I was beginning to feel desperate, especially as the AEBS is just over a year old, and this issue affected everyone on the network, regardless of device.

I think it is important to note that the Bluehost Chat Support person was unable to help, even when I copy-pasted the key points (not all of this!) to him. He could only look at what I could look at. He couldn't go any deeper than my File Manager, which wasn't deep enough to see the blacklist issue. Not even the IP Blacklist Tool in my CPanel provided the information. It was deeper into the system than that.

Here is what the technician who responded to my Support Ticket said in response to my very lengthy copy-paste message (including the one Bluehost customer later on in this thread who said they were able to help him/her with this info, too):

"Seems the IP itself was in fact blacklisted, I've just gotten a report back from the admins that it has in fact been cleared. You shouldn't have any further problems. Let us know however if you do."

Again, Tezgno, thank you. Thank you.

(I hope you see this!)

Tezgno solved my problem for me. Thank you so much.

I was completely flummoxed all day yesterday trying to figure this out. Deleted mail accounts on 3 different machines, 2 ipads and an iPhone. Isolated it down to my AEBS. Did a hard reset and that didn't fix the problem.

To be clear, I went into cPanel and looked at IP Deny Manager and there were no blocks listed.

I then opened a support ticket at my host (Sitegound). In the automated process of describing the problem, their automated system reported that there was an IP block, and then automatically removed it for me. Problem fixed.

So, it wasn't accessible in my cPanel. I had to contact them. But they had an automated fix for it.

Isn't it nice when everything works? ;-)

I had a problem that seems similar. Can't find the server only on machines that are connected to my AE. Potential temporary fix for people who can't get to their site and absolutely need to

1. Go to a site that gives you the ip address of a website: http://www.site24x7.com/find-ip-address-of-web-site.html and copy it

2. add domain to point to this ip via your hosts file

a. open terminal

b. type sudo vi /private/etc/hosts

c. add new line: ip.ad.re.ss domain.com

3. hit escape type :wq

4. hard refresh browser.
