Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Another one!

I have the same problem as most of the other users of this thread.
Yesterday I bought the SnowLeopard DVD in order to do the update of my Mac OS.
Right after inserting the DVD in the drive (MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221) it started to have some problems with reading the DVD.
I tried several times, but the drive isn't able to read the DVD and now has the same problem with other CD-Roms and DVD.

I am very suprised (and angry) about it, especially because I hardly use the drive.

As a lot of other people are having the same problem, there seems to be a structural problem with the drive and I think that Apple has to clearify if they are planning to do something and what.

Yeah girlfriends 2007 MacBook has a bad optical drive as well. It reads out the directories, but if you want to open files it hangs. Repair cost: around 300€!!! Well, thats more than three times too expensive.

Well, Apple I thought this is a student's laptop. A new device will burn down her budget.

I called Apple Support in November-ish 2008, February 2009, and March 2009. The extended time between calls is because I almost NEVER use the drive. The final call is when they finally agreed that it was not user-error. At the time, I was living in Norway and was forced to call tech support in Norway... at an "800-number"... WHICH I FOUND OUT IS A CUSTOMER-SUPPORT TOLL NUMBER IN NORWAY, but only AFTER I received a $100 phone bill!!!

So I have had the right to get it replaced, theoretically, since March. But when I went to the local authorized AppleCare office, they told me that they would fix it and I would be charged some outrageous sum if it wasn´t an Apple-authorized error. So I never got it fixed. Then I tried to install Snow Leopard this weekend, and no luck. I had to buy an external drive to get it to work!

So will take it down today for them to fix it (2 week turn-around time!).

There should be better customer support for this in their service FAQs. :-/

Same problem for me on a MBP 17, last version before unibody and it showed up after the laptop was just over a year old. In my MPB 15-2.33 just fully serviced, the SD works the media my 17 will not. Obviously Apple needs a service order for this as many are affected including those without AppleCare (I have AppleCare).

Add one more to the list:

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N

Firmware Revision: AP12
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB

It doesn't recognize blank DVDs and burned discs just spins them for a while and ejects them doesn't matter what brand I try. No fixes worked so far I tried all ideas that I could find...

and another...
Just went to meet with Apple and they will not take this thread of 200 posts as proof that there is a problem here. He did install Snow Leopard for me but it did not correct the drive problem.
My extended service plan was purchased from RepairTech, which is now gone, bankrupt!, so I have a 1.5 yr old Macbook and no warranty 😟
I will be trying some DIY tricks from web crawling and let everyone know if I find anything out.
sigh.

Ff anyone wants to post some buy-it-yourself and install-it-yourself replacement instructions, I would be grateful!
