Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.

There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

I've had this problem for some time with three different Macs. All of them eventually refused to read any DVDs, though CDs were sometimes fine. Burning is unpredictable even for CDs and rarely works at all for DVD media. Its not the media that is the problem as the machines can read all my problem disks from external DVD drives (I have a LaCie with an NEC mechanism).

Started with a powerpc mac mini, then an intel imac and an intel mac mini. All the drives were Matshitas (the intel Imac is a MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 firmware: FB2U ); I'm not sure of the models on the Mac Minis, but both were Matshitas. The iMac had its drive replaced under warranty, but the same problem occurred again in less than a year (obviously after the applecare had expired).

I keep searching for fixes but have found none. It is a worrying problem that will put me off upgrading to any other machine with a slot-loading drive until resolved. Is it firmware or hardware? Are apple drives just too fussy compared to others?

Glad to hear I am not just going crazier thinking that I was again out of luck because out of warrantee my DVD drive was not working for sometime now.. Just read on appleinsider about this issue and guess what my macbook pro has the # mentioned in their article..
I had to install latest OS by booting from a firewire drive....
lets hope apple replace them now for free even if computers are out of warrantee period

I had the same issue last night with Toast. I went through 9 cd-r's before it accepted one. Later I tried to burn a dvd-r and it told me that it could not calibrate the power level properly or something like that. My drive is used often to read and burn discs, although this is the first time I have tried to burn a disc since Snow Leopard came out. I know it worked before Snow Leopard, but now it seems to have all sorts of errors. It seems like a OS issue to me.

+1 for this problem. My DVD drive is HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N, and is actually the second DVD drive that has been installed on this computer (the first one wouldn't burn dual layer DVDs).

I put a DVD in, it hums for a second or several, then spits it out; sometimes it spits it out immediately. Occasionally I can get it to finally read the DVD by re-inserting it anywhere from 5-20 times.

I can also confirm that this issue was present BEFORE I installed Snow Leopard, although it wasn't as bad (could usually get it to read the DVD after a couple tries). While installing Snow Leopard, the SL disc read fine on first try, then in the middle of installation, when the computer restarted, it rejected the DVD. Putting it back in several times worked, and installation resumed.

At this point, I cannot use DVDs, no matter how many times I try putting them in the drive. They get rejected EVERY time. I'm on a long waiting list at my local apple-authorized repair center to get this fixed. (Guess they have a lot of them to replace.)
