Unobody 17" Macbook Pro 9600M broken gfx card?

Has anyone else been getting some pretty bad issues with the graphics card in the new unibody 17" machines? I have been getting some pretty bad green lines down everything when I use the more powerful GFX card.

This machine is brand new.. the lines do seem to get worse as the card heats up...take a look..

I didn't accept the refund because at the end of the day, I upgraded to this machine because I needed it. If it was a faulty machine, I was going to push for the absolute minimal time possible being without a machine. Having a machine that occasionally has spasms, waiting for a new one to be built (Which by all indications seems to be quite some time) is preferable to me over accepting the refund and being without a computer for 1 - 2 months while I wait for a new one to be built. I can't imagine why they wouldn't agree to providing me with a new one if they were simply going to refund it. I guess it must be one of those 'This is what happens according to the book' when it comes to apple call centre policy?

They did say there would be no additional fees. But regardless, if their official position is now a driver fault, I can't imagine it's a relevant option to them anymore.

Made thousand tests for apple. Reinstalled OS and still happened after long time of use. (pixels flickering green - easier to see using some grayscale backgrounds)
Without request from apple, I made another test and now I'm really not sure if this is a graphic card issue (no idea). But I had the problem and just closed the notebook for 2sec (LCD switched off) and opened. When the screen switched on, the problem disappeared (no more flickering). For that reason I'm really not sure if this is a issue related to temperature of graphic card. Probably would require again long time to see, but already tired to make many other tests.
I believe that the issue may be related with the new 17" LED LCD from apple.... who knows....

I agree somewhat with you I don't believe it is a heat issue, probably more of a power issue. I think that the graphics cards is either not getting enough power when it is being stressed out or is getting to much power. Especially since when you do a SMC reset the problem goes away for a little while. I tested it one time by doing a smc reset it was perfectly fine I put it to sleep and then I woke it up to have the green pixel flicker.

So I would say it has to be a driver or power management issue. I'm not an engineer so I wouldn't be able to tell you which... Just food for thought.

Here is the problem....how do you replicate it?

I can't seem to get it to replicate with any kind of consistency. I have been trying to persuade people on this, and other forums to go though a set of standard steps, but no one seems to be able to do it.

For all intents and purposes it's completely random. I personally only see it in Vista, but there is nothing specific I am doing when it happens. Twice it was searching the net, and once it was playing Company of Heroes.

IF we could find some way to effectively replicate it then it would not only be a huge step in the right direction, but help me greatly as I have a "Genius" appointment on Friday.

It's really hard to reproduce.
I would suggest to use the black and white wallpaper from apple called PIER or WAVE.
With that, I mostly see the problems at the top left corner from screen.
I detected the issue only after few hours of use.

I contacted apple yesterday informing the tests done and that i still have the problem. Now they informed that since I reported it at the 11th day and not at the first 10 days, I would require to send to a store for repair and would not have the right to ask for a replacement. I checked again the delivery dates and my visit at apple store to report the problem and it was less than 10 days. Will see what will be the next excuse now from apple.
They informed me that the engineers are working at a firmware update and that I should maybe first wait for it.... really strange that still no exact information about that many issues that a lot of people have regards the new notebook.
I believe that many people buy the apple equipments not only because the OS, but because of quality of product, design, etc.... but the quality is already not more the strong side from apple...

hello,

i just found the handy little app to keep track of temp. the cool thing (bad pun) about it is that it can log your temps over time. anyway, hope that helps.

oh, some one was talking about keep the old machine while waiting for the new one. apple will let you do that. it is called advanced replacement. you need to sign an agreement, and give them your credit card info. apple will then order the new one, and you have 15 days to send back the old one. if you don't they bill you the full amount of the new unit.

all the best,
