Unobody 17" Macbook Pro 9600M broken gfx card?

Has anyone else been getting some pretty bad issues with the graphics card in the new unibody 17" machines? I have been getting some pretty bad green lines down everything when I use the more powerful GFX card.

This machine is brand new.. the lines do seem to get worse as the card heats up...take a look..

Ran Cinebench on battery power with the LCD at full brightness, keyboard lights fully lit up. I messed up and ran the benchmark on the 9400M card but when I changed to the 9600M GT the problem returned.
Today must be a good day because usually it is a very random issue. But I ran the test a second time in the same way and when I switched to the 9600M card the issue showed up right away. Still more testing to do since the response I got from apple was "Wait for a software update."
I will try it again in a few hours.

Well, same story here, waiting for this issue to be solved before re-ordering (I cancelled my order).
If the fix comes as a software update, it will take some time, as Apple has to test and QA the patch.
If the SMC update theory flies, it might also fix the screen flickering issue at low light settings, it would boil down to improper power management throughout the system. It would makes sense to fix as much problems as possible out of the first batch of U-17s.
Anyway, a fix might already exist and run at Apple, but as eager as I am to see this fixed, I don't want Apple to cut corners on QA and do more harm than good... And QA takes time, it always does.
Time will tell.

Uhhh,

Ok, figure this one out.

I am in OSX right now, battery powere, 9600M, full brightness, full keyboard light.

I have a solid grey background and I am getting the artifacts the worst I have ever seen.

IF I plug in the external monitor, they disappear on both the LCD and the external monitor. If I unplug it, it comes back.

How does that make any sense?

WAIT!

I just put the mouse in the top corner (I have it set to blank the screen) and it's gone...I can't seem to get it to come back. Let me try a few more things.

I turned down the light and the keyboard and then put the mouse in the corner turning off the screen...the artifacts are back.

Hello everybody. I had ordered a MBP 17" and heard about this issue and got worried. I kept a close eye on the forum and seriously considered cancelling my order. For some reason I stuck it out, and my new 17" arrived last week. I have had it on "higher performance" mode since I've gotten it and have noticed none of the problems described above. I haven't used it for gaming or anything like that, but have been using CS4 pretty regularly each day. Still no problem, and everything seems to be running very smoothly (knock on wood).

Just thought I would chime in in case anyone was basing their decision to purchase on reading these forums. Seemingly not all machines have the problem.

Here's another update for everybody who's having the same issues.

Talked to apple again yesterday to find out if there's any news on this software update. After spending a couple of hours yet again with another Specialist. But this time, the guy that I talked to was more understanding of my situation. He was very helpful and after putting me on hold a couple of times checking with their engineering dept., they both agreed that the laptop was DOA. The engineer that he talked to told him that that this issue with the lines is NOT a driver issue. This is more of a GPU memory or the entire GPU is itself is bad. I guess it all depends on who you're talking too.

He was shocked that the last two specialist that I talked to told me to wait for a software fix. With all the trouble I've gone trough and not having a working unit since I got this replacement. Including the repairs and the wait time that I had to go through with my other laptop. Anyway to make a long story short, here I am again opting for ANOTHER replacement (who knows if this will be a good one or not, I hope) so I went for the advance replacement option so I can get it faster. Who know how long this will take again since I have a CTO machine. So here's hoping again.

BTW my laptop serial is W9101xxxxx so its Shanghai week 10. As far as I've seen around here, my laptops is pretty recent. So for those of you who have been told to wait for that software fix, you might want to think twice if you want to wait or make the call.

Just wanted to share that with you all. and Good luck to all of us.

Thanks John for posting this--really useful. Can I ask: were you having the problems on your MBPro LCD screen or on an external monitor? Because in my case, I only have issues on my 30" ACD (bad pixel noise) when I hook it up with the new Mini-DP to Dual DVI adapter, but the LCD seems to be fine. Can't decide whether deal with the hassle of replacing the MBPro or wait for an improved adapter. I too have a Shanghai week 10 model. Thx.

I picked up my MBP 17" (Antiglare diplay) yesterday in Germany. Ser.no. is W8911xxxxxx indicating that it was manufactured in Shanghai in week 11/2009, which is only one week ago.

I ran the following tests in high performance mode with monitoring temperature and fan speed:
1 Cinebench R10
2 Cinebench and HD Quicktime-Video (simultaneously)
3 World of Warcraft Trial

There have been no display artifacts so far. Maximum gfx temp was above 80 °C, but during test 2 the fan wound up above 4000 rpm and cooled it down below 70 °C.
