iTunes store unavailable?

Anyone else having trouble connecting to iTunes Store? For the last hour (2 pm EDT - 3 pm EDT) I've been attempting to connect to the iTunes Store and iTunes keeps telling me, "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store, Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

Obviously my network connection is okay (I posted this).

I updated to iTunes 8.1 earlier today if only... if only I had seen this thread first! #@%&!!!

Well, after hanging on startup I got the wonderful message my library was damaged, fortunately I had backed up the XML file after spending an inordinate amount of time synching my iPod to my library after an earlier disruption so I did the quick fix (replace the XML file, renaming it and trashing the new library and restoring the old one). Got it to launch with all my stuff still intact and felt rather pleased with myself until I tried to log in to my store account.

Now I can't play any of my downloaded music because it won't authorize the computer and I can't listen to previews of music on the store either although I can browse through it. I keep getting an error message:

We could not complete your iTunes Store request. A required iTunes component was not installed. (-42403)

I'm running 10.4.10 on a dual G4. I just want to know if it's the system or the Apple store although reading through I have a feeling it might be the latter.

Yes, after updating iTunes to 8.1 - oh why did I do this? My 14 downloads are now unavailable in perpetuity All I get is "Unable to check for available downloads. The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. This problem began at 12 a.m. 3/12/09 and has continued to 10:20 p.m. 3/13/09 - Still no response from Apple - All Apple fixes do not work - changing permissions on the iTunes folder does not work. Going through the terminal does not work as per below:

Use the Finder

1. Log in using an administrator account.
2. Locate your iTunes Music folder. If you are not sure where your iTunes Music folder is located, launch iTunes, open Preferences from the iTunes Menu and click Advanced. This will show you where the iTunes Music Folder is located.
3. Select the iTunes Music folder.
4. From the File menu, choose Get Info.
5. Click the disclosure triangle to open the Ownership and Permissions section of the Info window.
6. Set the permissions as follows (you may be prompted to enter an administrator account password):
* Owner: access Read & Write
* Group: access Read Only
* Others: access Read Only
7. Click the "Apply to enclosed items" button.
8. Close the Get Info window.

Advanced: Use Terminal

1. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities). Warning: This step involves modifying permission settings by entering commands in the Terminal application. Users unfamiliar with Terminal and UNIX-like environments should proceed with caution. The entry of incorrect commands may result in data loss or unusable system software. Improper alteration of permissions can result in reduced system security or exposure of private data.
2. Type the following command followed by a space:
* sudo chmod -R 700 (Do not press Return until after the next step.)
3. Drag the iTunes Music folder's icon into the Terminal window to automatically enter the file's pathname. The result should be similar to this:
* sudo chmod -R 700 /Users/[username]/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music
4. Press Return.
5. Enter your administrator account password when prompted, then press Return.
6. Quit Terminal
