30" HD Cinema Display with Mini Port to Dual Link DVI Adapter

In Using the new MacBook Pro 17", 2.93 GHz and 8GB of Ram the 30" HD Display gives me problems. The only issue seems to be that when displaying black, there are extremely visible horizontal flickering lines on the screen. I am running in performance mode but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

People have been waiting for years for Apple to come out with a new 30 inch Cinema Display so there's no telling how long a wait it would be for a new model with a Mini-DisplayPort. If you need one now, just buy it.

Do keep in mind that there are still a lot of stores with old adapter cables in their inventory. I bought mine about 1.5 weeks ago in Orlando and got one with the older firmware. I called Apple and they overnighted me a new replacement.

So I've got this same issue. However I do have a new adapter firmware 1.02. New Jun 2009 MBP and old (bought in) 2006 30in ACD.

Really it's just streaks/sparks/flickers in pure black only. Still it would be nice if they weren't there at all. I had this same problem with my old MBP (2006 1st Gen) and it turned out to be a bad ACD cable, so that got replace by Apple - no more flickers except when the MBP got really hot.

I always thought it was just a heat issue where the heat was causing signal distortion or something like that.

What I see now whenever there's some pure black on the screen is annoying but not horrible. I can live with it...

Have Adapter Firmware Version 1.02 on 30" Cinema Display with latest 15" unibody MacBook Pro (Intel 2.8 GHz, 4 GB Memory). Screen still flickers especially when viewing dark backgrounds. Pure black is worse with horizontal green lines. Have to turn monitor on and off and unplug adapter multiple times before a reasonable display shows. Very flaky.

Really frustrated as this setup is worse than my previous MacBook Pro. For $100 adapter I expect a lot more.

Apple - please help by fixing this!

I'm still having problems with my (second) display adapter hooked to a MBA. Both have been firmware 1.02. The first had (mostly green) noise in dark areas, and the occasional random flash to black. The second seemed much better, but very occasionally it will have a fit of several minutes of persistent flashing to black. Unplugging the cables will restore it to working order for a couple of days.

You can read my full report, and see a video of the problem at my blog:

Three weeks ago took delivery fully topped-out Mac Pro... within 10 minutes of warm up, my 30" Cinema HD display started flickering. The same monitor that's run for years on seven other Apples from Pros to Macbook Pros to Macbook Airs!

Buddy bought same system. We tried swapping video cards, swapping systems, everything to no avail. Bought mini-DV to dual HD adapter. When using the $99.00 adapter, monitor is almost perfect again, contrary to what some of you are experiencing.

Apple JUST replaced the entire system. It arrived yesterday, guess what, SAME problem. 5-10 minutes after the system warms up - lines across the screen.

Can't say Apple didn't try, but the monitor is driving me batty with the flickers. My business partner have tried everything we can think of.

If you own a 30" HD Cinema Display you KNOW how great they are. It's a shame we are all having this problem.

APPLE, PLEASE HELP US!

I had the same flickering issue with my 30" cinema display. After reading this post, I called Apple and ask for a replacement for my mini port to dual link DVI adapter (firmware 1.0.1). Apple was quit cooperative and the accepted my request. I received it the day after (with firmware 1.0.2) and guest what.. IT WORKED !!!. On the box, there is a minimum OSX version requirement (10.5.7). Good luck to all and thank you for helping me through this forum.
