30" HD Cinema Display with Mini Port to Dual Link DVI Adapter

In Using the new MacBook Pro 17", 2.93 GHz and 8GB of Ram the 30" HD Display gives me problems. The only issue seems to be that when displaying black, there are extremely visible horizontal flickering lines on the screen. I am running in performance mode but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Usually this is due to a faulty Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI Adapter.

I had the same problem with my new new MacBook Pro 17", 3.06 GHz with 8GB of RAM when connected to my 30" HD Apple Cinema Display. I saw visible horizontal flickering lines on the ACD screen, especially in black backgrounds. At other times I would see bizarre green lines. Refreshing the ACD at various resolutions etc did not fix the problem. I went to the Genius Bar and we tried a new Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI Adapter to connect my MacBook Pro to a 30" HD Apple Cinema Display at the Apple Store and it worked perfectly. Apple replaced the Adapter without any fuss and I have had no problems since with my MacBook Pro connected to my 30" ACD.

I had the same problem when connecting to my new Mac Mini with the $100 Dual Link adapter.

I would get the vertical white snowy lines with red and green striped, and the fix was to check the resolution. This occured after I was in sleep mode after watching my Elgato Eye TV video.

Your choices for native resolution are: 2460 x 1600, 2048 X 1280 or 1920 X 1200.

hi everyone, I am getting the following as well as flickering sometimes:

1/ Bluetooth disconnects and it won't connect without a restart
2/ kernal panic
3/ bluetooth mouse goes craze, move mouse to right adn cursor goes left! basically opposite happens
4/ as point 3 above, but nothing is clickable, as if its frozen but the mouse kind of works
5/ everything freezes

I am getting the feeling that when its not connected to my new macbook pro unibody, and just running the laptop on its own, all is fine, testing it now........

Maybe I spoke too soon.
I've been having the stripes problem (intermittently)for several weeks.

I went to the Apple Store and they replaced the Dual-Link adapter since although photos with my digital camera showed the stripes with red, green, black lines, dual cursors, and difficulty in reading the menu bar, I also was able to launch Utilities->Grab and took a screen shot which did NOT show any problems on the screen.

This behavior occurs randomly, sometimes not for a day or two, sometimes 3 times in a day.
It has been cleared up by Restart.

This always occurs after I used a Hot Corner -> Sleep Display.

Although I was there today, I have to bring back the Mini, Dual-Link adapter, and the 30" ACD.

I'll probably have to leave the computer for a couple of days as they try to figure it out.

So, IMHO, they don't know what this quirk is all about.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem with my brand new 2.66GHz Unibody 15" Macbook Pro and my 4-year old 30" Apple Cinema HD Display. The Dual-link DVI adapter firmware is v. 1.02

The problem is the same with 9400M and 9600 GT display cards: Any large black area on the 30" screen has horizontal errors in it. Opening a black web page like MobileMe gallery will immediately result to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuU5ztJOZEg (I just shot the video using my iPhone.)

I think zapping the PRAM and/or resetting the SMC took it away for a short while, but it always comes back.

Doesn't matter if the Macbook Pro is connected to a power outlet or not, or does it have any external devices connected to it. It always happens.

Any news about solving this issue?

Plussa,

I looked at your you tube video, and had to reply. I have exactly the same problem, but it is with a 30" apple monitor hooked up to one of the first intel mac pro's. I've tried everything to fix it, new brick transformers, different cables etc, and it's still there. I was just so amazed that someone out there has precisely the same issue. I've been on to apple about this but because the screen is four years old and I live in the UK where apple have a policy of 'no serviceable parts' to these screens I was basically told to go out and buy a new one. Shame on you Apple. I'll just have to live with it for now but just wanted to let you know that it's not confined to the macbooks. Personally I think its a manufacturing fault with these screens. If enough of us got together with our serial numbers and went en masse to apple perhaps we could get a result.

Regards
