I'm having the same problem. My CD burner works well with other programs like Nero and Windows Media Player, but not with my Mixmeister software. Within iTunes, the CD drive does read an audio CD, retrieves the song info, and rips the songs OK, just no burning.

I understand that both iTunes and Mixmeister rely on a burning program called GEAR CD/DVD Engine, so maybe _iTunes 8.1 is creating a problem/conflict with this GEAR program_.

http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.phphttp://www.gearsoftware.com/suppo rt/drivers.php

From their website:
+"The gearsec.exe driver (and associated GEAR Security service) were part of GEAR Software's older driver set which allows the GEAR CD/DVD Engine to recognize and work with CD and DVD drives on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.The GEAR CD/DVD Engine is not only used in GEAR Software's products, but _also in many 3rd party applications such as Apple's iTunes for Windows, Cakewalk's Pyro, Audible's AudibleManager and DiscWelder by Minnetonka Audio, to name a few._ So, even if you do not have a GEAR Software application on your system, there may be other software applications that rely on the GEAR CD / DVD Engine, and the GEAR drivers. A list of programs which use GEARS is found on this page:

I went to their website and downloaded a new GEAR driver but no luck yet.

I also tried performing an iTunes repair, but no success. I am thinking of doing a total restore to a date prior to the iTunes 8.1 update (using Norton's Save and Restore) and see if I can regain the CD burning capability...

same problem here nothing wrong before updating to 8.1 and next day can't find burner. The stupid thing is that in the cd/dvd test of iTunes (i never used that before) the program tells me that there is no reader/burner but when i put a audiocd in iTunes detects it and looks up the cd text online.
Lucky is still have Nero to burn my .m4a but i do hope the problem is solved with a new update because i do have a lot of .m4p on my computer so i do like to burn those a well.

Hello all,

Thanks to everyone who has sent in their iTunes Diagnostics output. It looks like we may be dealing with a filter conflict between the GEAR driver included in iTunes and some other CD software. To test this theory, please follow the steps in our device filter troubleshooting article for your OS:
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
iTunes for Windows Vista: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters

If you emailed me your iTunes Diagnostics output already, and you are able to follow these steps, please email me back to let me know whether or not following these steps resolved the issue.

I just finished doing the steps and it started to recognized the cds but when I got to burning it went straight to writing, and then skipped the burning process and then finished. My computer cannot detect audio cds which it could before but now.

Alright...I followed all the steps that Roy suggested for filters to remove the lower filter, etc. but it unfortunately did not fix the problem. Still can't burn anything in iTunes! I ended up sending a playlist to RealPlayer today so I could burn it. Hopefully this problem will be fixed by apple soon, as it is DEFINITELY a problem with iTunes. The CD I burned in RealPlayer was the same drive iTunes claims to have problems with!

Actually i called a friend of a friend and he tried to help me out and I noticed that for the default settings for itunes the itl wasn't checked off so with that I checked and turned off my genius it actually started reading audio cds and and burning them. THe burning process is still not the same it goes straight to writing and then goes to burning/finalizing but without the status /progress next to each one while it burns. but here are my diagnostics again since everytime i try to email you from the forums it tells me no connection.

Roy,
I followed the steps in the link you showed twice to eliminate conflicts with device filters and nothing changed at all. My cd text preference remains grayed out and can't be changed and when I attempt to burn I get the message "can't find burner device or software". I sent you my diagnostics yesterday.
