VoiceOver Installation Problems - ITunes unknown error (1701)

Is anyone having problems installing VoiceOver on their shuffle? I have set it up and restored a dozen times and after downloading VoiceOver, I get an unknown error (1701) that it cannot be installed on the shuffle.

I have had the shuffle for 2 says and no VoiceOver... 😟

Macbook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I've found that the VoiceOver kit would install, but the checkmark in the summary tab for the shuffle would erase itself after the install completed and i had no voiceover functionality (like another user here).

Seeing Toonz suggestion of looking for the .dll made me realize that i don't install itunes on my C: drive...so i looked and sure enough. Apple's install did not detect where my iTunes installation was...the voiceover.dll was on the C: not D: drive.

I moved the .dll to the root of my iTunes installation, restarted iTunes, and plugged in my Shuffle. Sure enough... it reported it was generating voiceover tags for the songs on the shuffle. I ejected the shuffle and sure enough....the pleasant voice of the Mac was replaced by the PC generated voice announcing the song. Success!

So if you don't install to the default C: directory, just move the iPodVoiceOver.dll to the root of your iTunes folder (no matter where that is)

Thank you Toonz!

Hi CM,

Since you did the steps above (the Terminal commands), what files do you have now in

/Library/Application Support/iTunes/iPodVoiceOver.framework/Versions/A/Resources

?

Also, is your iTunes.app in /Applications, or did you move it somewhere else?

It turns out that iTunes.app 8.1 must exist in /Applications in order for the VoiceOver Kit install to work on Mac!!

Yes, that's a bug in iTunes 8.1 (the error message is totally incorrect) -- you have to run the VoiceOver Kit uninstaller instead of deleting the .dll manually. Go to "Add or Remove Programs" in your Control Panel and remove "VoiceOver Kit".

Is your iTunes installed on the C: drive? Do you have iTunes.exe in

C:\Program Files\iTunes\

?
