VoiceOver Installation Problems - ITunes unknown error (1701)

Is anyone having problems installing VoiceOver on their shuffle? I have set it up and restored a dozen times and after downloading VoiceOver, I get an unknown error (1701) that it cannot be installed on the shuffle.

I have had the shuffle for 2 says and no VoiceOver... 😟

Thanks for the info. I corrected the problem based on information received in this discussion group. I moved iTunes back to my applications folder after noting that iTunes had to be in the "Applications" directory for "VoiceOver" to install correctly. After moving iTunes v8.1 back there, VoiceOver installed and works perfectly. OK....I'll be back to my Apple store this weekend to purchase one more shuffle for my daughter!

I must admit that I just skimmed the Shuffle instructions when I installed on the first go around and missed the fact iTunes needs to be in the Apllications directory to install properly. If it is not there, perhaps Apple should make it clear. Thanks also to Apple who contacted me regarding my problem after reading about it here in the discussion area!

To summarize, for iTunes on Windows:

It seems the installation of iPodVoiceOver.dll is ehh... a little simple-minded. Apple does not seem to make quality in iTunes for Windows a priority.

If you have prompted a download and installation of VoiceOver (e.g. by checking it in settings for you Shuffle 3G in iTunes) and it still does not work:

0. Shut down iTunes. (I was extra thorough and ended anything related with task manager, which is probably not needed).
1. Locate the iPodVoiceOver.dll (here it ended up in C:\Program\iTunes\iPodVoiceOver.dll even though iTunes is in C:\Program\Media\iTunes)
2. Copy iPodVoiceOver.dll to the folder where iTunes.exe can be found.
3. Start iTunes and try again. Here it have worked just as I expected ever since.

I was having the same problem, except error 1601. I found that my Windows Installer Service was set to manual, and wouldn't start up to install Voiceover. Here is how I reset it:

1. Click Start
Collapse this imageExpand this image
Start button
, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.

Collapse this imageExpand this image
User Access Control permission
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. In the console tree, click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
3. In the details pane, right-click Windows Installer, and then click Start.

In my case, "Start" could not be selected, so I selected "more options" and set it to "automatic". Then restart the computer, go to iTunes, install voiceover. Works perfectly.
