iTunes 8.1 "Verifying iPod" bug?

Since 8.1 came out, pluggin in my IPod Touch results in iTunes freezing up and it unfreezes when it's unplugged. I left it plugged in anyway and after about 5 minutes iTunes unfroze and began "Verifying iPod." It takes way too long and no one is going to sit through this kind of delay every time you plug in your iPod. Is there any fix or workaround or explanation for this behaviour?

I have tried all of those steps. And the issue is present on two separate PCs that were both working before I updated to ITunes 8.1. I have

- uninstalled and reinstalled ITunes 8.1
- Turned off the automatic camera recognition in Windows XP
- Verified the device driver
- Double checked the service is running
- uninstalled and removed all registry references and preference files and then reinstalled
- Reset my Ipod touch (all files and settings)

Nothing resolves it. ITunes hangs when I connect my IPod touch but works fine if I do not.

This needs to be resolved as Apple has locked us into a specific interface for working with the device and now it does not function.

I had this same verification problem with my 160G Classic after upgrading to 8.1. By simply resetting the unit and restarting it in Disk Mode (hold centre+menu, as soon as apple appears hold centre and play/pause) I was able to reconnect it with iTunes. The same verification bs appears again but you are able to eject the iPod with little difficulty and upon reconnecting the iPod with your computer- while remaining in disk mode, restoring becomes possible (i wasn't able to previously and several error messages resulted when I tried). Now that the restore process has completed you are able to connect and sync with the horror that is iTunes 8.1.1. Hope this helps, I'm not sure of the relevance to Touch models but it's worth a shot since it worked for me.

Had exactly the same problem...takes hours to "verify" and then sync. I tried a simple reset of the sync history but this did not work. I had to do a complete restore of my Touch 2G followed by a restore from my latest back up...took hours but all working fine now. Question, if I reinstall iTunes, or upgrade to the latest 8.1.1, will I loose all the artwork in my library?

I have been having the same problem with the endless loop of 'verifying ipod' that lasts for hours. After reading through the answers posted for this topic, I tried many. The solution that worked for me was suggested by meldiron on April 2 at 4:05 am. I just wish I hadn't first taken the suggestion of cluesystems left on March 30 at 10:24pm to Reset Sync History - bad idea that cost me hours to reload 80G of music. Anyway, here's what worked:

During the endless 'verifying ipod', I ejected the ipod, getting the 'are you sure you want to disconnect while ipod is syncing?'. I responded 'yes', waited for the ipod to go back to the main menu, and then reconncected it and again got the 'verifying ipod'. I repeated the above steps, and was able to have the ipod recognized, and sync it to add my new tunes after 3 tries. I hope this helps anyone who has been as frustrated with this bug as I have been over the past week. Please fix this annoyance Apple!

Info: I have the 5th gen 80G ipod video model.

I have the same problem plus I get a pop up saying the ipod cannot back-up to the hard drive. I have searched the Apple Support page to email them direct and each time I come back to the discussions page. No disrespect to people that offer solutions, but I would like to see some response from Apple, after all we are the ones who are putting money into their bank accounts.
