MacBook Battery Won't Charge...Get "Not Charging"

Hi all...did an SMC Reset...didn't work...reseated the batter, etc. When I plug in the mag, it is constantly green but the laptop cannot run without power cable and I get the "Not Charging" near the top.

Anyone have new info on this...frustrated...battery is just over a year old.

Ok I'm in the same situation as a lot of guys here

Battery is just refusing to charge

I have even bought a new battery and this one is refusing to charge too, and a worrying looking bulge has appeared on the new battery.

Im thinking the worse, its a logic board issue right?

I'd like to provide something far more constructive than the usual "take it to a genius" line that's used a lot around here.

Fault:

After power drain from standby after a week of no use resulted with the laptop not powering on with the charger plugged in (green indication light) and from battery. Basically echoing what everyone else here has said.

Battery Cycle count: 297

What I tried regain life to the unit:

I did the SMC reset suggested in most of the posts here a few times (Remove battery, hold down power button for five seconds, insert the charger, re-insert the battery, press power button) nothing. As it is a work laptop I couldn't care less what the outcome was going to be....

However this time I did something different.

a) I left the charger plugged in to the mains power and the latop (still displaying a green light, not red)

b) left the laptop open (as if I were sitting in front of it looking at the screen)

c) device still lifeless.

About 20 minutes later the laptop rawed into life turning itself on. It booted up as normal and the green "charged" indicator light changed to the red "charging" light.

From here I checked the battery stats. It showed 96% which was obviously incorrect, it remained at this value until it increased to 100% after some time (1 hour or so). Then I rebooted the device, disconnected the charger and it was working again from the battery as it normally would.

By no means is this a fix, just a run down on what I did to get it working again. I've given it two days before posting here and all is well.

Cheers

We bought a new battery and the light on the power adapter is still green and the battery charge display shows "Battery Is Not Charging." The battery itself is stil the factory-provided charge.

I tried the SMC reset and that did not work either. It really sounds like Apple needs to recall MacBooks and replace/repair hardware. From what I read in other message boards, it sounds like it is a logic board issue.

Some even gave theories that this is a static electricity issue and using a magnetic screwdriver on the L bracket where the RAM is to discharge the static electricity. This didn't work either. Here's the hardware info. If serial number is needed, I'll post if asked.

SUCCESS!

So, my issue was I left my 17" Macbook Pro (2008) in sleep mode, and it obviously drained the battery and eventually shut off completely. I plugged in my charger, connected the MagSafe, and nothing happened. The MagSafe stayed green, and the battery indicator light was flashing when I pressed the indicator button.

I left it plugged in for about an hour hoping it would revive itself, but nothing happened. Finally, after removing the battery a couple times, trying an unsuccessful reset, and pushing the power button a couple hundred times, I came up with an idea to FORCE the battery back to life.

I removed the battery, plugged the charger in, connected the MagSafe and made sure it was glowing. Then I slammed in the battery and it immediately began the slow blink with the MagSafe having turned orange. 🙂

It's been 10 minutes, and it's still charging successfully. Hope this helps some of you, probably won't work for all.

I'm currently having a similar issue with the charging of my battery. I purchased my Macbook from Best Buy in 2009 and I was able to get a new battery and charger in July. Everything was fine until now. The new items worked properly. Now I'm plugging in the charger and I'm getting the plug signal showing that it's plugged in but the information says "Battery Not Charging" Power Source: "Power Adapter" Here is my battery and charger information:

Some help would be appreciated, I can't afford to take it to an Apple store right now.

My battery is 'dead' too.

I have a macbook4,1 which was working fine until some weeks ago. I recently bought a new MBP, so I haven't used the old one a lot. It has been a few times that the battery went completely empty while in sleep mode (the macbook was just sitting there, unopened for 10 days). Connecting the magsafe would charge the battery and everything worked just fine, no loss in battery autonomy, it was still doing a couple of hours surfing.

Until last week, suddenly the macbook only works when the magsafe is connected. It says the battery is not changing. The green lights don't even flash when I press the button, so it must be completely empty.

I have tried several things already but none work. I refuse to believe that the battery died, it was doing just fine until last week!

I'm having the same problem right now. A couple of weeks ago I noticed something unusual... it showed "not charging" in the indicator instead of a percentage... I just never seen it show up like that but it was shown that way at 93%...so I wasn't too worried. I was told to callebrate my battery. Before I callebrated my battery I let it drop down to 85% and it wouldn't recharge at all. I can't remember but I dropped it down a bit more and it did start to charge although slowly and not consistently (went from green to orange). Then I let it drain all the way and it recharged up fine and showed the steady orange. I noticed when I would use it since then it'd never show it recharging back up like it used to ("trickle")... but when I put my computer to sleep and woke it up I noticed it had recharged and whatnot. Maybe I didn't callebrate it right? I don't think I let it sleep for 5 hours. But I'm not sure if that will even fix the problem. I cleaned the magsafe adapter and the connector just in case but I don't think a dirty adapter is the case. Something makes me think something's wrong with the logic board or battery? Am I jumping to conclusions? I didn't touch the computer after last Sunday and when I woke the computer up on Wednesday it showed "Not Charging" at 82%...I let it drop to 75% and it still says not charging with a green light. Great. 😟 I don't know what to do...I think mine is a built in battery MBP so I don't even know how to check it. I've only had this computer for 17 months. Should I trust local repairs to look at my computer? I don't really have a lot to spend... I have never been mobile with it so it's fine as a desktop but it really *****, especially if you were to lose it if you were working on it. I've already tried the SMC and it did nothing...unless I didn't do it right...

I'm SO dissapointed ...

What can we do if Apple Will not do anything about it ... ??????

I havent got the money to be buying over £100 of battery

I am having this exact same problem but it only started doing this when I replaced my battery. The last battery this computer had ran for about 700 cycles without a problem and I bought a spare battery from a friend of mine for $30. It's an original Apple battery that he bought brand new and rarely used (as you can see below, the battery only has 17 CYCLES) but, upon inserting it into the computer, the battery does not charge at all. I've tried the zapping the PRAM, doing the SMC reset several times and just plain letting the battery stay connected on the off chance that it will start charging on its own and I still got nothing.

Hey everyone.

I had the same problem about 6 months ago. I called Apple and the guy told me my battery was "worn out" or something and I needed a new one. I didn't want to spend the $130 but after two weeks of thinking about it, I gave in and bought a new battery.

When the new one came in I made sure never to put it on sleep mode, I always shut it down. Maybe 3 days later the same problem occurred. "not charging" I was more then upset but I didnt feel like dealing with it again so i stuck it out thinking it was the charger...bought a new charger...that didn't fix the issue either. Now, i've spent over $200 trying to fix a four year old computer with no luck.

here is my info for the "new" battery
