Font Substitution_ArialMS

I recently purchased one of the new iMacs. This updated my version of iWeb 08, operating in system 10.4.11, to iWeb 09 in 10.5.6. When I began to update my website I encountered numerous error notifications stating, The font ArialMS" was substituted for the missing font "ArialMT". The warning also included substitution for the bold version of these fonts. To my knowledge, I've never used either of these type faces on my site. I found a discussion group post relating to this same problem from May 2006. The solution was to open the index.html.gz file, do a find/replace for the missing fonts in text edit. Save, then delete the original index.html.gz. I tried this but neither font was detected in the file, so this didn't work for me. These fonts are not in my system. I've tried to find them online with no success. Anyone have any ideas? This is an art site, and is huge. The thought of recreating each of the many effected pages is overwhelming. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I'm having the same problem with iWeb '09. When I open iWeb, I get a dropdown box with two error messages. This error comes up when I open and edit every page of my site which is distracting and takes time and I'd really like to correct this.
"The following errors occurred while trying to open this document. Error type: Substituted Font Description: The font ArialMS was substituted for the font ArialMT and the font Arial-BoldMS was substituted for the the font Arial-BoldMT"
"To include missing fonts, add them to your Fonts folder, then quit and reopen iWeb"

I also tried the suggestion from the May 2006 post and neither font was detected in the file, it was actually index.xml.gz in my username/library/application support/iweb/domain.sites/package contents.

1. Does anyone know where or how I can include the missing fonts so this message stops?
2. Which is missing ArialMS or ArialMT?
3. Is this because my Arial font version is old and needs to be updated?
A quick web search shows that I can purchase this font, but I'm not even using Arial anywhere in my site - I just want to stop the dropdown box and message.

I'm running OSX 10.5.6 on a Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 and iLife '09 which was very recently installed.

Thanks for any help I would really appreciate anyone's expertise

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You might try using Pacifist to look for the font's you need on the system install disk that came with your computer and have it extract and install it. You might also download the 10.5.6 Combo installer and let Pacifist look at it to see if any of the fonts you need are in it.

The only Arial MT font I have is the Arial-Rounded MT Bold. Don't know where that came from.

There are a couple of sites where you can download the font. One is: ArialMT Free fonts | Download fonts.

I am also having exactly the same problem as jnhgallery and espie.
I have also tried advice from the other forum mentioned re: opening the domain file in text edit and doing a find/replace for Arial MS with exactly the same result - no instances of the 'missing fonts' found. I also tried saving page by page that was offered as a solution on another thread, also to no avail. Neither can I find the missing fonts 'ArialMS and Arial BoldMS on any backup I made prior to upgrading my system to OSX 5.6 and iLife '09 (or in any OS9 font folders). What I did find though was that when I booted my computer up from a partition containing Tiger and ilife '08. I did not get the messages in iWeb so it definitely is a problem caused by either the last system upgrade (OSX 5.5 - 5.6) or iLife '09 or both.
I rang Apple tech support this morning and although he was not familiar with the problem he suggested my fonts were not installed correctly and suggested I carry out an 'archive and install' from my Leopard disc. Personally i'm not so sure about this because i remember iWeb '09 needed a system upgrade to OSX 10.5.6 in order to operate. So an archive and install would take me back to 10.5. and if i didn't update then to 10.5.6 iweb '09 wouldn't work and I would have to remove ilife '09 presumably which starts to feel messy. I have a feeling that if I archive and install and then upgrade the system to 5.6 exactly the same problem will occur, because by the looks of it I think it is a bug in OSX 10.5.6 and/or iLife'09, which if it is, hopefully Apple will iron out eventually.
I agree with everyone here, it is very annoying and if anyone reading this has a solution or comments on what I have written, please post.

Thanks in advance

Thanks OT,

I downloaded the ArialMT from Free fonts, but unfortunately it didn't include the Arial-BoldMT.

I've done some poking around and it looks to me like the "ArialMT" font "suitcase" was a PostScript Type 1 font that came included in Adobe Reader 5.0. I'm pretty sure Adobe Reader 5.0 was installed on my computer when I bought it back in 2004. The suitcase included regular, italic, bold, bold italic, etc. The files are still on my computer - including one called ArialBolMT but it won't install. I believe I'm missing a piece of the font "suitcase" that needs to be present in order for the font to function.

To anyone else, I could suggest looking in:
HD>System Folder>Application Support>Adobe>PDFL>5.0>Fonts>
ArialMT
ArialBolItaMT
ArialBolMT
ArialItalMT
It's worth a try to double click the above files and see if the Arial-BoldMT will install.

Anyway, since I don't have an Adobe Reader 5.0 disc, I'm going to try your suggestion and put in the original system install disc and see if Adobe Reader 5.0 is on there, extract it and see if I can get the whole font suitcase again, AND get it to work with Leopard.

Thanks again OT!

I encountered the same problem. I've been using Linotype FontExplorer X to manage fonts. It's free and a great program with a ton of features. Do a search on Arial. Get info on one of the Arial versions and look at all the info you get. The PostScript name is likely causing the conflict. Fonts have Names, Postscript names, Family names, Unique names ( I have no idea what a unique name does ) and these names aren't displayed or referenced consistently by the programs that use them.

In the search box there's an easy to miss drop-down so you can search by postscript name. Activate one of the search results. Linotype also gives you dates as to when the font was designed or released. I chose the later date thinking some new useful code has been worked into the font. I wish this forum interface allowed a screen shot.

I haven't bought it yet but Lynda.com sells a DVD or online-viewing on font management. It's probably worth getting. Font Management with: Ted LoCascio

Hi,

I suddenly started getting messages in iWeb that said the Font "ArialMT" is substituted for the missing font "Arial".. But it was only happening on new pages I had created.. Can't say what had changed much on my system for this to occur.. But had me baffled because FontBook HAD Arial and NO ArialMT..

Anyway to cut a long story short.. I didn't want Arial as the font anyway as we're changing over to Verdana.. It didn't matter if I selected all on the webpage and changed it all to Verdana, i'd still get the error message regarding ArialMT and Arial..

So my fix was to navigate to: ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
1. Copy the file "Domain" somewhere else as a backup (desktop is good)
2. Right click on the "Domain" file inside ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/ and Show Package Contents

Now this is where many people say open index.xml.gz and look for the problem fonts.. Well in my experience index.xml doesn't have any code regarding fonts.. SO another folder caught my attention inside "Domain" called "domain-0B29016B-4545-4DC4-9DDB-74AA1E25AJ34.. If you have this folder it will probably have a different string of letters and numbers to mine..

3. Go into your "domain-xxx etc" folder and navigate down to the first compressed xml file you can fint.. I had like 30 because I have almost 30 blog type pages in my site (just the way its designed I guess).. Anyway if you uncompress the .xml.gz file you've found and open that in text edit you'll probably be able to find font information in there.

As I had many to have to find and replace on I found it easier, to select all the .gz files and open them all together which mass uncompressed them in their relative locations.. Then I had to go through and delete the original .gz files otherwise iWeb won't save and publish the code changes you make. In otherwords, you need to have ONLY .xml files left over and iWeb will recompress them when you save in iWeb next.. I also used dreamweaver to mass find and replace the code, but textedit can do it one by one.

Hope this helps anyone having this issue..
I know if I went and made a brand new page in iWeb it will get this font issue again on the new page.. So my next task is to find the original template files and change the font instances in it so new pages don't cause headaches..

I've read all the posts. Very good info, thanks. I am using iWeb09 and just started to get the same "ArialMS substituted for the missing Arial MT font" subsitution error yesterday, in the middle of building a site. I had nevere gotten it before. I have not used any Arial font in ANY of my pages, and i DO have Arial MT in both my system font folder and my user font folder. This error came out of nowhere last night while working. Nothing in my system has changed. Anyone find a definitive fix? Thanks.
