How do I transfer iTunes purchases to another apple ID (Account)

My daughter has been purchasing iTunes content using my Apple ID (account) for many years. I now have 5 macs for myself and she has a new laptop. This puts us over the 5 authorized computer limit. I have set up a new, separate apple ID (Account) for her to purchase new music. I would like to transfer the music that she has purchased under my account to her new account so I can de-authorize her computer from my account.
Is there a way to transfer the Apple ID (Ownership) of the iTunes content to another Apple ID (Account)

Multiple, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I don't believe there is a way to transfer authorization to another user.
However, you can always burn purchased tracks out to an audio CD which now becomes like any other audio CD which she can then play on her own computer or do anything else you normally do with a normal Audio CD.

I was getting a divorce, and over the course of a decade, my ex-husband and I spent about $1k on itunes purchases. What to do now that we weren't sharing an apple ID? We each needed to create new itunes ids. It was exasperating to go to the apple store with the dilemna of how to keep those legally purchased songs. Sour apple geniuses would say to me, "can you just ask your ex-husband for the itunes account?" It was a ridiculous conversation, and it for me, magnified the problem of attaching something as personal as a music collection to a corporation. Anyway, here's how I transferred the purchased songs to a new apple id:

1. In the old apple id, view your songs by purchase date, so you can establish a playlist of purchased songs.

2. make a playlist of purchased songs. (Unfortunately, you can't get this list as a text file to test later, but I took screenshots, by going to apple account online, and "viewing purchases." In this way, I could have a master list of the purchased songs.)

3. burn the songs on cd as mp3s. It's important not to burn the songs as data! (In my case, no matter what I did, I could not get the song names/album info to transfer, but there's a fix for that.)

4. if your music collection is anything like mine, be prepared to save a lot of songs on a lot of cds.

5. I tested the cds on a different computer. Then I deleted all the purchased songs, just to keep things pristine.

6. Start a new itunes id. All the purchased songs are gone. Worry not.

7. import music from the burned cds into your new itunes account. The DRM should be washed out.

8. Use Tuneup to update the song names and stuff. It's an inelegant app, and not very intuitive, but it works. In my case, I needed to rebuild my itunes library before it could churn out the "cleaned" songs. And it took several attempts, but it worked.

Select the playlist then File > Export playlist and export as text.

You cannot burn an MP3 CD with iTunes purchases

iTunes purchases are not MP3 and when you select Burn as MP3, the ONLY files that will be burned are songs that are already in MP3 format. iTunes purchases are AAC.

You mean select burn the playlist as an audio CD. Note that when you reRIP the CD,the songs will be a lower quality than the original.

Anyway, here's how I transferred the purchased songs to a new apple id:

Songs are not transferred to new AppleID. They are simply files. The original AppleID can still redownload these files as iTunes purchases are always tied to that AppleID they are purchased with.

They are put into a new iTunes library (which is not an iTunes account).

3. burn the songs on cd as mp3s. It's important not to burn the songs as data! (In my case, no matter what I did, I could not get the song names/album info to transfer, but there's a fix for that.)

The track info was not there because you burned and AudioCD, which does not have track info. An MP3 would retain all of the data.

4. if your music collection is anything like mine, be prepared to save a lot of songs on a lot of cds

You can put ~100-120 songs on an MP3 disc.

I'm going to bump this useful (if tedious) thread yet again. kookla143, as we know, did not burn MP3 discs; therefore, your response to 4 may be misleading to future readers/bumpers. Since she burned audio CDs, she burned much fewer tracks per CD. That's going to be a ton of CDs (and time) for a large library.

kooka143 has removed the need to authorize using her ex's account, so this is a solution—for music only. There is a slight loss of audio quality. It's easy enough to do a one-CD test to see if the new tracks will be acceptable to anyone thinking about doing this.

However, kookla142 wrote specifically; "3. burn the songs on cd as mp3s"

I followed up by suggesting she did actually burn audio CDs (but there was no reply from her).

My response was to her incorrect statements. Doing exactly as she suggested will not work and some may get confused when it doesn't.

I may have over looked a post as I skimmed through here. So let me give my scenario and see if it can be answered (with a step by step process) if possible:

My kids have always purchased movies/apps on my itunes account........they are older now and I believe that are responsible enough to manage thier own accounts. They have created their own Apple ID's on a old PC and now I wish to transfer/give access/put thier movies and apps in thier own ITunes so they can sync them to thier new phones........any help would be greatful.

I have an iTunes account which I setup with my very first iPhone, way back in 2009, before iCloud. When iCloud came out, I signed up for an account but wanted access to an email account so I signed up with the same username as the iTunes account (ie, I had firstpart@live.com, so I made an iCloud account firstpart@me.com). I've managed, keeping the two separate but now I want it all (app purchases, music, movies, rentals etc) on the iCloud account. I use iTunes match, (meaning I could effectively keep the songs) but that doesn't help with the other purchases.

I'm assuming there's no way (even difficult) to do this. Am I right?

Quite a long thread here, but no answers to the actual original question. Or rather, the answer to whether one can transfer the official ownership of a song/movie/whatever from one apple ID to another so that the items that appear in the "Purchases" section, are removed from the original account and then appear as Purchases of the new account is "No, you can't." Despite several legitimate reasons for this. For example:

  • Dependant children grow up and set up their own accounts (I see a generation from now wondering why Grandma Alice has all of dad's death-metal on her account).
  • Separated spouses wish to isolate their collections.
  • Still together spouses who shared accounts initially (i.e. in the first few years of marriage and didn't have a reason to have separate accounts since the didn't have iPhones), wish to isolate their collections due to differings tasts (my situation).

This all becomes especially annoying when my wife has had to update to ios7, or perform iCloud backups, which apparantly re-downloads purchases in the process, forcing her to remove them again. Not sure if this is a formal policy of Apple's, but it's clearly not sustainable in the long run.

Please, no more explanations on how to move song data from installation of iTunes to another. This does not solve the originally stated problem and any one of us can likely figure this out through a simple google search.

Although I am certain that Apple will do nothing about this for at least the next several years, I would like to make this a feature request if possible, I don't post on these forums often, so I am uncertain if they operate this way.

You cannot transfer purchases to a new AppleID.

Alright, I'm sorry, but I've gone through this entire thread twice, and I don't see an answer to what I want to know. I'm not smart. This talk of ownership and different types of audio files goes right over my head. Would somebody please, in layman's terms, answer my question?

I've got over 800 songs, 15 movies, and nearly 50 TV show episodes that I have, over the past many years, accumulated on my dad's account. All of the songs and most of the movies and TV episodes are on my Mac, which is also linked to his account. I would like to make my own account. Additionally, in the next few months, I'll be getting an iPhone that I will want to link to my own account.

1. Can I make this new account and keep the music, movies, and TV shows that are on my Mac? I do not care about ownership or anything like that, but will I be able to mix songs from the old account and new account on the same iPhone?

2. If not, I have an iPod Nano that has all of the songs. Could I use that and transfer those purchases onto my new account?

Thank you for your time.
