Yes. An iTunes account is used to purchase from iTunes store.
and keep the music, movies, and TV shows that are on my Mac?
Yes. They will be on your computer but they will still be linked to your Dad's iTunes account.
You will simply need to authorize your computer with his AppleID & password.
I do not care about ownership or anything like that, but will I be able to mix songs from the old account and new account on the same iPhone?
Yes. I have iTunes purchase from 3 different accounts (me & 2 daughters) on my iPhone/computer.
2. If not, I have an iPod Nano that has all of the songs. Could I use that and transfer those purchases onto my new account?
As previously stated, you can transfer them to your computer but you cannot transfer them to your iTunes account.
iTunes library = all the items in iTunes on your computer
iTunes account = used to purchase items from iTunes store. iTunes purchases are permanently linked to the iTunes account used to purchase. (in iTunes select an item, right click - get info. Click the Summary tab and it will show the iTunes account used to purchase)
I don't think you can transfer purchases, but you can change your Apple ID: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

Yes, this question was answered almost 5 years ago in this very thread... 😮
Chris,
I had the same question as the original and I totally understand your responses. Libraries are on computers, accounts used for purchases, etc. It seems to me that the library would be associated with a specific device. So how do other devices fit into this? What I mean is, if my daughter has a library with songs from my apple ID on her computer, will she be able to listen to those songs on her iPhone which has her own (new) apple ID?

To be correct, a device is sync'd to a specific library, ie. you cannot sync an iPhone to multiple libraries/computers.

If the songs are on her computer and she can listen to them, they can sync to her iPhone (even if they are from a differnt iTunes account).
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks.
Things change! They might have updated their system... I know you couldn't change your Apple ID for years until very recently.

Your post is in response to what?
I know you couldn't change your Apple ID for years until very recently.
If 6-7 years is "very recently", then you are correct.
I've been trying to change my Apple ID for 6 years with no success

Like many people are in this same situation, I know this is an old thread but I am finding myself here too. I purchased songs and apps under one Apple ID that I initially created that points to one large iTunes library. My library is for family members to share music, apps and videos. Since then, I have created a new "family" Apple ID where I want my family members to use this account to download music and apps.
Here is the problem, the old Apple ID account (xyz@yahoo.com) was the main account that I used to purchase music and apps as well as the iTunes library is attached to this account. Now, I have created a new "family" account (xyzfamily@gmail.com) which I want my family to use so they can download music and apps from the main iTunes library.
How do I use the new Apple ID with the iTunes Library?
pfisher112: Sign into the new account and start using that. As long as devices sync to the same library you can (as was said by ChrisCA earlier) use media from multiple accounts. The computer will remain authorized for up to 5 iTunes Store accounts (so don't keep on making new accounts).
Is there a specific reason to make a new AppleID? It just means a big nuisance when it comes to doing this kind of thing. In particular make sure you do not put yourself in a position where you need to re-download past purchases because iTunes will make you wait 90 days before doing that from different accounts. If you have a proper backup (as you should) there is no need to do that.

You don’t need to do this. And you should not do this as everyone gets everyone else’s info form the computer.
You can use Family Sharing and everyone keeps their own AppleID.
See this -> https://www.apple.com/ios/whats-new/family-sharing/
The reason behind creating a new "family" Apple ID is that I thought you have to use 1 apple id in order to share iTunes Match. Another words, I want to use iTunes Match and I was under the impression that ONLY 1 apple id is registered with iTunes Match.
For example, I have 6 people in my home. In order for 5 people to use iTunes Match, I want them to download ANY song and ANY app to there iPods. I want them to ONLY have the ability to download apps and songs.
I thought in order to use iTunes Match, everyone needs to know the ID and password. Right?
Naturally, I created a "family" Apple ID and I can share the password.
Again, I want any family member to be able to download ANY song to there iPod. I am not talking about streaming music. This is where I thought iTunes Match would work.
