Random Freezing - Continued

The previous thread - [Random Freezing|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1767718] was too long and was causing browsers to time out. It is now locked and continued in this thread.

So what does migration assistant have to do with this? I'm experiencing full hard system lockups and dreading having to send my system in.

Cheers!

I have random freezing and used the Migration Assistant when I bought the computer. I was just wondering if others did the same, because perhaps that has something to do with the problem. Actually, it would be better to find somebody who did not use the Migration Assistant but does have the random freezing problem, so I can discount this as a potential cause of the issue.

I too did NOT use the migration assistant and I did get a freeze at least once a week running Firefox and Safari in Leopard. I have not had a freeze in about 1.5 weeks since changing the max kernel settings as outlined in this thread. I have read that some folks are still freezing even after the kernel change, so I'll keep you posted if/when I experience my next freeze.

Since I an overseas until June and Apple Phone Support doesn't have a clue how to handle this (or even admit there are lots of freeze issues out there) I am resigned to taking screen shots of the Console after a freeze occurs, so that hopefully a Genius in San Francisco can figure this out once and for all when I return to the US.

Although I'm not sure if it fits with the freezing issue, I've had a ton of problems with diagonal lines. (picture here: http://twitpic.com/2qsad), and occasional freezes when I plug in an external display.

I sent it in to apple, and they replaced the logic board, HD and LCD. Within five hours of getting the machine back, I got the exact same issue (picture: http://bit.ly/2g1Lk2). This leads me to believe that it's either an issue with the (factory) ram, or with the November 2008 style logic board. I'm contacting Applecare again, and I'm going to fight for a completely new MBP, or at least the new logic board. This is unacceptable.

Adding to the count.

Macbook pro unibody early 2008 (Nov built date from the serial number)
4G Kingston ram installed.

maxmem=3456 trick doesn't work

Random freezes on 9400M,
haven't had a freeze on 9600GT.

Apple Hong Kong doesn't seem to know about it, or refuses to acknowledge it.
Has done the following as suggested by apple support
Reset PRAM
Apple Hardware Test (extended) pass without trouble.

System is quite clean, done 2 fresh install already with latest driver. Doesn't solve the problem.

They are now telling me to send my unit in for further testing, with no timeline on how long it would take.

This is my primary work machine... Remind me why I am paying so much for the grieve?

Since there is no way to reproduce the problem and all Apple technicians I talked with told me that they are not aware of this problem, I decided to take as mus evidence as possible and start publishing on the web.

Here is my collection of photos on Flickr

and here I have three videos on YouTube

As long as Apple pretends that they are no aware of the problem, I will do my best to inform as many people as possible about this issue.

Good for you Haris! I applaud your efforts! I had similar thought a couple of days ago.... create a web page that highlights, with video and photos, this frustrating freezing problem until Apple gets serious about recalling and fixing or replacing these machines with the issue. Next time I freeze, I'll post to YouTube as well. I would encourage others in this thread to do the same.

Then, at the very least, when you walk into a Genius appointment, you can pull up your photo/video evidence from YouTube when Apple can't "reproduce" the problem.

Ok update here after the previous post in the old thread -

So took my MBP to my retailer as told by Apple. Retailer insisted that the RAM was bad, and said that though they use Transcend as well, and it's fully supported, the RAMs can be lemons sometimes. So he replaced my RAM with brand new DIMMs. No problems since then.

Or so I thought.

I'd been running the computer on the 9600gt card, so it hadn't crashed even once. I didn't know that I'd changed it to the performance card, so I'd been wondering why the system is running so hot and giving only 2 hours of battery backup!

So I shifted to the 9400 card when I discovered this. And WHAM! While watching a video on VLC, it crashed, made an ugly noise in a loop, and the scree went black except for the top 10% or so, where some weird multicolored thin lines seemed to be stacking up! I can't really explain it, but I think it's been photographed/video captured by someone.

Hard restarted my system. Ran fine again on the 9600 card(which it shifts back to on a restart because it crashed on the 9400 card or somesuch) then shifted back to the 9400 and same hang on vlc again within 20 minutes. It was sunday today, so calling apple care tomorrow.

I guess the RAM's fine now! I'm not really as ****** now because I can reinduce the crash again! Just run a video on the 9400 card and it'll crash! At least the apple buggers won't be able to ignore it and my machine wont be written off as "ok"!!!

So that's that!

Also, if a firmware update will fix this problem, then it's pretty ******* off to have a 2000$ + machine hanging because of improper QA. Sad sad. As I said before, I love this machine, but
