Mac OS X (10.5.6)
Well two weeks after adjusting the kernels and without a freeze in the same time period, I had another freeze a few moments ago. Safari beta, Mozilla, and iTunes were open and running. I was listening to music through iTunes while running the visualizer (the one that looks like dark planets with the streams of light running between them). About 2 minutes after turning on the full screen visualizer, my MBP stopped playing the song and then began making an stuttering sound of the last note played. The visualizer froze as well. No beach ball and after waiting about 30 seconds the machine did not recover, forcing me to push the power button for a hard re-start.
I am running a 2.53 ghz machine with Apple factory Ram at 4 gb (but at present this is 3.38 gb due to the kernel change mentioned above).
I am more convinced than ever that this is an overheating problem, because prior to turning on the visualizer, CPU "A" was reporting a temp of 108 F. I have been using fan control since I bought this MBP and my minimum fan speeds are 3000 RPM. After the freeze and the subsequent re-boot, I checked the temperature and it was a whopping 135 degrees F. The back left of the machine, just above the screen brightness control was very hot. Upon reboot the fans did immediately kick up and as of this moment I am back to 108 F. I am not in an air conditioned office and the ambient air temp has to be around 85 degrees F.
For me, the next step will be to go back to my 4 gb of RAM, reverting to the original kernel settings, and then trying to reproduce the problem in the same manner above.
Other thoughts and comments are always appreciated.
i've also been having problem with random freezing ever since I upgrade my umbp 2,4 ghz to 4 Gb ram... the problem obviously came from my memory, it was corsair memory... and then I've switch using v-gen memory with hynix chipset and everything runs smooth and dandy 🙂
Well, just to update my situation for those who are also struck by the issue:
I gave my MBP away to a local licenced service provider the other week to check for any problems. They did 40 h of testing and couldn't reproduce the freeze. Therefore, there was no green light from Apple to do any repairs.
Fair enough, I thought, the system was reset anyway, I might as well try my luck. Then, about 30 mins ago, I switched on the 9600 and played a little MiniOneRacer, in other words, nothing too intense. About 3 mins into the game, the machine froze, black screen, audio-loop, etc. the whole deal.
I called up Apple Support to tell them about my problem (as I had done in november) and the trouble I'm having reproducing the error before the eyes of a service person. They were understanding and the guy told me that he found an internal Apple-Support document not available to the general public and that they're very aware of the problem and are working on a fix. Whether it was a hardware or a software issue, they couldn't yet be sure.
So if it's a software issue, no problem, they'll publish an update, those affected download it, done deal. However, should the chipset or logic board or anything else be faulty, they don't see a way to inform their customers! No support document, no calls, emails, etc. What the service person advised me to do was to call regularly and inquire as to the progress of their problem-solving process! Interesting concept. I also asked, whether it was possible to publish THIS information in some way so that people at least know it's being taken care of... But that doesn't seem to be in their power either. Unofficial sources are once more the only recourse for troubled customers.
Anyway, I hope this will be resolved soon, preferably by a software update and I also hope this will put some users here at ease. Sometimes, just knowing SOMEONE is doing SOMETHING helps with the pain 😉
My daughter has the same issue. i called AppleCare and they stated its a known issue and would be fixed in Mac OS 10.5.7. Well, the update is here and has not fixed the problem. The computer freezes with video screen part-way drawn at least once per day.
I just bought this 15" 2.4GHz MacBook Pro in March 2009. I bought it with 2GB RAM. I didn't have any problems until I started playing WoW again a couple weeks ago. After playing for the first 10-20 minutes of the day, the screen will freeze on the last picture and loop the last second or so of sound. The only way to unfreeze is to hard reboot. The weird thing is it usually won't freeze the rest of the day no matter how long I play. It's not isolated to WoW by the way as this has also happened in Warcraft 3 and once while just using Safari. I've tried pretty much everything outside of Apple support. I bought and installed 4GB of Muskin RAM from Newegg. The problem is still happening. Upgraded to OSX 10.5.7, reinstalled OSX and all updates, installed 3rd party fan controllers (cpu/gpu now rarely go over 70c) and I'm still getting crashes.
Next thing I will try is the maxmem workaround, then I will reinstall the original 2GB of RAM and try my luck with Apple, although I'm not too enthusiastic as I doubt I can reproduce the issue for them. Hopefully a fix is released soon.
Well, after a hard crash every day or so. The MacBook Pro is going back to Apple for repair. We got tired of waiting. Hopefully, a motherboard swap or some hardware change will fix it. I have delayed buying more MacBook Pros until this one works as expected....
I have been waiting patiently for a software/firmware fix, but I am now reconsidering taking it in (since they appear to have a "test" for whether the board needs to be replaced).
Right, I got a message today saying there is currently no solution for our problems. However, I will be contacted as soon as there is any news on the issue.
Also, the article you mentioned does not apply to this MacBook Pro model (mine, obviously, this might be different for some of you out there).
Thanks for the info. I have the MacBookPro5,1. I will try updating Safari later today, see if that does anything (not sure why it would, but some were saying the beta helped)
I took my MacbookPro5,1 into the Apple store for repair on this issue. I just got it back now. They swapped out the logic board. Hopefully this fixes it, will let you all know.
king_m1k3, how did you demonstrate the freeze? Mine seem to only occur in Parallels, and the freeze is completely random. Is there an application/game that can reliably reproduce the freeze? If so, I will take a trip to the apple store and see what they can do for me.
I didn't have to. I just explained all the different times it froze and they took it. He did see a few kernel panic logs on the system though.
Also... the computer froze again last night watching YouTube. If it happens again, I'm going to put the original 2GB RAM back in and if it still happens then, I'm going to cry.
OK just an update. The computer only froze once a couple days after the logic board was replaced. It hasn't froze since then. Good right?
Now the only problem is that the entire screen randomly flickers when using the "better battery life"/9400m. Guess I'll be visiting the Apple store again..
