Quitting Safari - impossible

My iBook G3 has been unused for several months.

I just fired it up, preparatory to taking it traveling, and I discover that Safari 3.2.1 is malfunctioning. I can't get out of it. When I type commandQ nothing but the spinning ball, same for selecting Quit Safari from the menu. I have to force quit - with comand option esc as my only way out.

I have Safari Plus installed, but it hasn't caused trouble before.

I have seen other posts with this issue. The solution offered, Reset Safari, leaves me wondering. Do I leave all the check boxes checked, or do it incrementally? And what are the repercussions of doing this? Can I regain what I've lost - icons say?

I'm back and I hope this gets to the top so all of you will see it again.

It's still happening (it=I have to force quit sometimes to get out of Safari).

I've poked around here and I saw another post on a similar issue. By checking the activity monitor the poster discovered Safari was using over 90% of CPU.

This is the case for me too.

Could this be the source of my quitting problem and the problem of Safari not being willing to load a new page sometimes?

And if so, what do I do about it?

I am loath to install either 3.2.3 or 4 (not beta) (I am still with v3.2.1) until I get this sorted out - OR - do you all think that the newer 3 or perhaps 4 will solve the problem?

Welcome back Mrs H !
I don't have an answer but this will bump you to the top again. It shouldn't be too long for our friends Klaus1, Hawaiian_Starman or iBod to notice this post. 😉

Thanks for trying but nothing yet, but maybe this will get noticed now...

(There is no escape... 😉 )

Hi again Mrs H! 🙂

I hear that Camino is a good browser, but never tried it myself.

Have you installed security update 2009-002? That is a pre-requisite for updating your Safari.

If you are going to update Safari, go for 3.2.3. I am not sure that Safari 4 (final) would really suit you!

Thank you Klaus for finding this again!

From me??? 😟

Have you any clue why the CPU use would be so high for Safari?

Yes, I have.

OK.

Can you elaborate on this, please...

Absolutely not! I meant this thread! 🙂

No. It happens an rare occasions for me too, but a restart of safari cures it.

Some (emphasise: some) users have issues with the location of their tab button, and other enhancements introduced with Safari 4. Whilst these are non-technical subjective objections largely based on a failure to properly learn how to use Safari 4 (I do hope some of those moaners are reading this), Safari 4 certainly has one bug: it interferes with the Location feature of iPhoto.

So for the sake of peace in our time, stick with Safari 3.2.3 for the moment. We can always explore Safari 4 later!

I doubt whether Safari 3.2.3 is any slower than 4, but I skipped that model.

Thanks for clarifying! 🙂

Yes, but not for me - restart and immediately back to 94-98% - I checked (you knew I would)

Don't know what this means, but since Mr H uses iPhoto and PhotoShop both, we'll stick with 3.2.3 when I get around to installing that.

*???Should I use APP delete to ditch 3.2.1 or just install 3.2.3 and it'll write over 3.2.1???

Peace in our time, hmmmm, lovely thought. (I like peas. 😉 )

Slower? I want faster! And so far, Camino certainly is that.
I just asked another question, above (or below depending on the list) on the little lock thingie. Any thoughts?

No idea about the CPU issue, posts about it are rare, but I am looking into it.

Thanks for asking about Lily! 🙂

She is now all of one month old (on Sunday), and has become 'unscrunched' and looking lovely like her older sister!

But we can't really tell for a month or two how much alike, or not, they will be - not that it really matters.

Meantime No. 2 son has announced a due date for their no. 2 - in January. Will post back then (I am sure this thread will still be active! 😉 )

Breeding like rabbits, they are....

Hi hpr3,

Been there, done that; but, as per your suggestion, I tried again.

No difference. Indeed, at present activity monitor is showing % CPU 110.50!

I think I am going to try updating to Safari 3.2.3 and see if it changes anythin; otherwise, by default, I've switched to Camino 😟 .
