Quitting Safari - impossible

My iBook G3 has been unused for several months.

I just fired it up, preparatory to taking it traveling, and I discover that Safari 3.2.1 is malfunctioning. I can't get out of it. When I type commandQ nothing but the spinning ball, same for selecting Quit Safari from the menu. I have to force quit - with comand option esc as my only way out.

I have Safari Plus installed, but it hasn't caused trouble before.

I have seen other posts with this issue. The solution offered, Reset Safari, leaves me wondering. Do I leave all the check boxes checked, or do it incrementally? And what are the repercussions of doing this? Can I regain what I've lost - icons say?

If I remember correctly somewhere in the haze of threads Mrs H mentioned she had a SuperDuper clone that pre-dated the problem with Safari.

Haze-y threads - me?
Yes I do have a clone and (and here's the kicker, or one of them - as you know with me, there's always more than one- _I'm not positive it predates the problem_.)
At the risk of throwing a wrench into the proceedings there is nothing wrong with doing a reverse clone and seeing if the problem goes a way.

If I were positive it predated the problem, I might consider this.
I would recommend the latest Firefox. It is stable although slower and clunkier than Safari. I also have Camino which is stable but also slower than Safari although iBod might disagree.

Shall try Ff after deleting the beta version described above.

I agree with you, but it might be a hard sell to convince Mrs H to delete her internal disk and then clone back from the backup.

You are absolutely right! As I said to hpr3, if I were positive it predated the problem I might consider doing it, but I'm not.
But hey! it might all be working now!

and, it might be - jut not perfectly - maybe I'm just faster with the keyboard than Safari with its slow brain.
Otherwise an archive and install is the next and final step before an erase and install of the clone.

I think I might be willing to do an install of the clone first, but lets just see what happens. A&I is even scarier for me.

In the meantime the world has moved on. Apple have released an update for Safari 3 for Tiger:

This may solve everything!!!
Should I wait til a few of you test it and then go ahead with the update after seeing if there are any major issues mentioned here?
And also a Security Update 2009-002 for Tiger 10.4.11:
These you should download and install (make sure it is the right one for your Mac).

Yes, I always do - tricky since I have both 2 PPCs and 1 Intel.
It is possible that the Safari update fixes your Safari. If not, proceed with an archive and install.

Let's hope it's a fix!

You will have seen hpr3 and me muttering to each other.

Indeed!
I even found you wondering about my problem in another location entirely.
I am sorry to have utterly confounded the 2 of you - but it's nice to know you think of me even when I'm not around!

Klaus - YET?

Just in case anyone else is reading this and not noting the other threads about SU not showing the new Safari.
Security 002 is required for the update, so that has to be done first.
And I found an answer to my question about where is 3.2.2? Windows only.

Mrs H

PS Just in case anyone else is reading this? Who am I kidding - over 2000 folks are reading this 🙂

Did I say 2000, make that 3000!

The GOOD NEWS is - everything seems to be working fine! 🙂

Getting ready to do a Security Update and then the new version of Safari. I've downloaded from Apple and will proceed soon. I'll leave my backup as is - status quo ante the troubles - just in case.

Thanks for ALL your help and patience,
Mrs H

YES!! 🙂

Congratulations!
What a felicitous way to end this seemingly unending thread with the arrival of Lily.

We've probably broken all sorts of site rules by chatting here about life - and doesn't it feel grand!

Best wishes to your entire family from

We've hit the 100 posts' mark. A personal best? 😉

Certainly for me it is! In fact, now that I look back at the count, my congratulations to Klaus was #100. 🙂

Klaus, do you remember saying this in post #3? 🙂
Phew!
I was expecting another 38 post thread!

And 3680 views! Who thought this would be so interesting that Carolyn S would be waiting for a sequel?

And - my problem is fixed! (until, of course, I do the updates and see what occurs - don't worry, I'll begin anew)

Mrs H

PS I thought this was a completed thread - it really is never ending.
