Quitting Safari - impossible

My iBook G3 has been unused for several months.

I just fired it up, preparatory to taking it traveling, and I discover that Safari 3.2.1 is malfunctioning. I can't get out of it. When I type commandQ nothing but the spinning ball, same for selecting Quit Safari from the menu. I have to force quit - with comand option esc as my only way out.

I have Safari Plus installed, but it hasn't caused trouble before.

I have seen other posts with this issue. The solution offered, Reset Safari, leaves me wondering. Do I leave all the check boxes checked, or do it incrementally? And what are the repercussions of doing this? Can I regain what I've lost - icons say?

The combo update doesn't require any uninstalling and your bookmark's are safe. You have the luxury of a complete backup.

Just a few more questions, sorry. And these may be really stupid questions. I'm addressing them to you, hpr3, since Klaus rightly has family matters on his mind right now.
But, Klaus, feel free to put in your 2 pence worth if you are available. 🙂
A. Does the combo update for 10.4.11 also update Safari 3.2.1 or are these 2 separate events?
B. And if it is 2 separate updates should I do both? or just Tiger and see how Safari works before doing anything else?
C. Should I keep SafariPlus on the desktop during these updates? (I remember Klaus saying to delete input managers when updating Safari and SPlus is my only one but it is now still onthe desktop where it was moved when we were troubleshooting.
D. And how do I get the bookmarks from my backup file back into Safari once that is updated?
E. I have an old download of Tiger 10.4.11 from when I first did the update - should I reuse that or download it again?

Weather has cleared and neighboring dog has been returned safely to home.
Time to consider doing the update.

Yet? Nope!

Meanwhile:

A. I don't remember, but I don't think so. As Safari 3.2.1 requires 10.4.11, do that update first, then follow up with Safari.

B. Yes (see above).

C. Yes. Let's see how Safari performs before re-installing SafariPlus.

D. They shouldn't disappear, but the file is: Home/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist. You can drag the backup copy to that folder after the reinstall.

E. If it is the Combo update then yes. If it is the Delta update (only takes you from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11) then no.

You never told us it was lost - you really must supply all details to get this fixed! 😉

Good luck! 🙂

Currently on the G4 - I haven't done anything yet - things are stable right now, but I know I can't procrastinate - I'm sure it'll get bad. There were so many symptoms; I am trying to recreate them and can't just now. Wish I could paste in a puzzled face here.

NOTE: I just read this on the update info:
"The 10.4.11 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Tiger and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac. This update also includes Safari 3, the latest version of Apple's web browser."
Sounds like it includes Safari, question is which version.

This new question may not apply then:
Will things be screwed up - since I already have 3.2.1 installed (and obviously so too is 10.4.11 installed now) If I am updating 10.4.11 with Safari 3.2.1 already in place, will I be causing myself a problem?

OK that is good to know.
E. If it is the Combo update then yes. If it is the Delta update (only takes you from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11) then no.

And since I'm not sure which it is, I'll do the download just in case and use that download.

Actually I did - about 7 posts above this one (and depending, I think, on how you have your page view set up - for me this is at the top of page 4) (PAGE 4? on my 2 post thread?) Here's what I wrote:
Weather worsens.
T'storms and pouring rain. _The dog from the farm next door came here - he's afraid of thunder, his parents are away, his buddies are not afraid but aren't helping him._
_We are currently dogsitting_. I just came here on the MBP to let you know - I'll do all this tomorrow.
Turning off and unplugging now.
One quickie ? -when I do the combo update - do I uninstall anything? of does it just write over all? >Do I loose all my bookmarks in Safari? How do I keep a copy of them if that is the case?

Good luck! 🙂

Thank you, I am scared. I am not yet finding any issues today after 2 day off of G4, but will be downloading the combo now. I assume that working until things really worsen makes it all worse? A

And how does one (for "one", read me, Mrs H) screw up Tiger in the first place?

No.

I am SO not going there! 😀

No, honestly (do you remember that TV show?) I really meant the question seriously.

OK - so I did it!
I have a new 10.4.11 and a new 3.2.1. All bookmarks, the few saved cookies, everything else is in place as before. BUT-

A few strange things occured (well, maybe not strange if I knew what to expect) -
A. When I restarted after running the Updater the chime chimed, the screen showed the Apple and grey circle gear wheel thing for a while, then it scared me to death when the screen went black - then the chime chimed again, and the whole restart process thing happened again on its own and all was OK.

B. After the restart after re-doing Security update 2009-001, the blue status bar didn't get to the end of its line before the normal blue screen appeared (and stayed blue for a very long time) then everything proceeded fine.

C. I repaired permissions and got the usual Shockwave repairs that I get each and every time I do a security update (we've discussed this before on a different thread and No, I do not have Flash Player, it's Shockwave that causes the repairs to be needed and I don't know why I need Shockwave, but apparently I do) and then a whole string of other repairs. The repair permissions at the beginning of the process was clean - no repairs listed.

SO - guess what? I go to Safari, do a search, go to webmail - just trying to do things to test it out - and - it won't quit! I have to force quit. GRRRRR! I try this 3 more times and it quits fine.

Now what?

I may try living with this and see how often it occurs and if at least the other funky things that happened before are gone.

I don't have another browser installed (except and I'll never use it) an old Beta version (v3.0b3) of Firefox that I've never used and don't want to touch - I must download AppDelete and get it out of here.

Perhaps it's time to download the current Firefox and see how that does? (after deleting the beta version of course)

I am clinging to the life-raft that sentence represents: are you now saying that Safari quits when asked to?

A-C are quite normal startup features after a major update. Subsequent restarts should look more 'normal'.

It is not a bad idea to have another browser installed, if only because one occasionally comes across web sites that are not programmed properly for Safari.

But Firefox is not the only candidate. Many recommend Camino.

I don't have Camino, just Firefox, and I only have that to enable me to reply to posts saying 'why will this website only open in Firefox?' 🙂

If I remember correctly somewhere in the haze of threads Mrs H mentioned she had a SuperDuper clone that pre-dated the problem with Safari. At the risk of throwing a wrench into the proceedings there is nothing wrong with doing a reverse clone and seeing if the problem goes a way.
I would recommend the latest Firefox. It is stable although slower and clunkier than Safari. I also have Camino which is stable but also slower than Safari although iBod might disagree.

Mrs H.

You will have seen hpr3 and me muttering to each other.

In the meantime the world has moved on. Apple have released an update for Safari 3 for Tiger:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/Safari3_2_3_forTiger

And also a Security Update 2009-002 for Tiger 10.4.11:

For PPC Macs: http://support.apple.com/downloads/SecurityUpdate_2009_002__Tiger_PPC

For Intel Macs: http://support.apple.com/downloads/SecurityUpdate_2009_002__Tiger_Intel

These you should download and install (make sure it is the right one for your Mac).

It is possible that the Safari update fixes your Safari. If not, proceed with an archive and install.

Life rafts don't really work in cyber space...
So the answer is - sort of - for the most part it quits - I'd say 9 out of 10 times maybe. I have't had it up and running long but I keep trying to quit and see what happens.
It still hangs up occasionally and won't go to the next place I ask it to and I'm left staring at a screen of where I've been with the address of where I'd like to go in the address bar and just the http:// blued as I described before. SafariPlus is still on the desktop BTW.

Good to know - it really freaked me out.

What about I can't remember for sure, is its name Overture?
Must decide soon but first have to get AppDelete and get that beta Ff out of here.
