Quitting Safari - impossible

My iBook G3 has been unused for several months.

I just fired it up, preparatory to taking it traveling, and I discover that Safari 3.2.1 is malfunctioning. I can't get out of it. When I type commandQ nothing but the spinning ball, same for selecting Quit Safari from the menu. I have to force quit - with comand option esc as my only way out.

I have Safari Plus installed, but it hasn't caused trouble before.

I have seen other posts with this issue. The solution offered, Reset Safari, leaves me wondering. Do I leave all the check boxes checked, or do it incrementally? And what are the repercussions of doing this? Can I regain what I've lost - icons say?

I was working in Safe Boot a day or so ago, after I had done an update to Office 2004 (I do updates in Safe Boot per BDA - or you? I don't recall)
I can't remember if there were any issues then.

And, the tricky thing is - there always is a tricky thing with my problems, isn't there? - even in regular work space (or whatever it's called) sometimes Safari is just fine, works, quits, doesn't hang up and sometimes it's a pain in the ...

Even though you have done a Safe Boot recently could you indulge me and run a 'Verify Disk' from DU?

Even though I did it on May 4, I redid it for you as requested (your wish is my command)
You'll note the volume verifies is "Ten Four" - I run Tiger off my LaCie, which has several partitions, Tiger is on "Ten Four" (clever name, huh?)

The report:
Verifying volume “Ten Four”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
%)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Ten Four appears to be OK.
Mounting Disk

1 HFS volume checked
Volume passed verification

PS I just also turned off RSS feed, check every hour - I noticed this was checked when I was wandering through prefs and since Klaus suggested something might be going on to hang things up, I thought this might be a thing - and I never use the RSS feeds to my knowledge, I just check BBC & NYTimes when I want to see them.

And I put new batteries in my Logitech mouse, it was hopping about peculiarly and I thought new bats might help things along.

Additional - semi-new - symptoms:
As I said above, the usual arrow on webpages is occasionally an iBeam now and sometimes a pointed finger. For ex, when I type in this box it's an iBeam but if I move the mouse up to Preview to see what this text looks like, it stays an iBeam and doesn't switch to an arrow or finger- or just now it switched to a finger and didn't come back to iBeam till I clicked in here. And if I move the iBeam from here to, say, the Safari menu bar it stays an iBeam for a while.
I wondered if my mouse was sick and gave it new batteries as I said.
I also now am seeing keyboard commands (in a yellow box) that didn't appear in Safari before (but I suspect this began when I reset Safari before and lost prefs - for ex I lost the unchecked box for spell check and had to go reset that again)
And, now when I'm in Safari and (say) I click Word in the dock, it opens, but below Safari, it used to be the newest thing I opened appeared on top - I suspect these are all prefs I lost?
I used to be able to move the cursor on the menu bar and it would show the next menu, now I have to click the word (moving from file to edit say) Is that the tab option I just unclicked?

I am going mad here!

I am going mad here!

Maybe not, but the rest of us are! 😀

You have a messed up system, methinks. Reinstalling Safari won't cut it, we need major surgery.

Please try the following:

Repair permissions.
Verify the hard disk, repair if required.
Run the 10.4.11 Combo updater again, then restart your mac.
Run the 2009-001 security update again, then restart your mac.
Repair permissions again.

Report back with results.

If that fails you are in for an archive and install.

Sorry - it's not my fault! Klaus you said I was a pioneer, this kind of pioneering I can do without.
Repair permissions.
Verify the hard disk, repair if required.
Run the 10.4.11 Combo updater again, then restart your mac.

I download updates from the Apple site nd then do them - never using software update - is that the download 10.4.11 itself that you are speaking of and do I need to uninstall something before running this? Would you please, if you don't mind, give me a link to the update on the support site?
Run the 2009-001 security update again, then restart your mac.
Repair permissions again.

Report back with results.

It'll be after you get back to me before I do this.
If that fails you are in for an archive and install.

As we've discussed before, I do a SuperDuper backup every few days - haven't done one since this problem began. We did say I could use this instead of a&I, but let's hope the updater again works.

As I said to hpr3 above, "we are having a series of power outages today (windy weather) - I'm currently on the MBP but I don't want to turn on the G4 or do anything as important as an update with the power bing so iffy!"
Can you boot from your backup to see if that works?

Works in what way?
Boot from? - you mean turn on the G4 and then switch to the backup to be my startup disk? and re-boot?
Or if not that, what?
I did attempt to open Safari from the backup, just to see if it worked better and I got a messge saying this application had never been opened before, did I want to open it - being a chicken, I bailed out on the whole thing...
The backup has been made to be "bootable" acc. to SuperDuper - so I guess the answer to your question is yes. What do I learn if I do that?
And what do I learn if I boot in Safe Boot mode and things work better?

Before I reinstall the combo update, a few MORE questions -
I haven't changed to a newer, reinstalled Safari, you know that - right?

Do you think the update is the answer to my problem? Is it safe to turn on the G4 and copy to my backup the recent mail I've dealt with - just by draganddrop - not by doing another whole backup, before attempting to fuss with an update?

And thanks, Klaus, for sending other folks here to see what they suggest - though I'm not sure anyone has interjected any more input.

PS Have a nice weekend - will you stick with me on this or are you out of commission until Monday/

Windy weather!!

Your tinkering has probably brought the entire State to its knees! 😀

so I guess the answer to your question is yes. What do I learn if I do that?

It means that, if your backup works as intended, you can simply clone it back to your hard drive.

Running the 10.4.11 update will not change your version of Safari, it will stay at 3.2.1 but you get a fresh copy.

A few suggestions were made by the real experts, which I passed on. None of them worked! 😉

will you stick with me on this or are you out of commission until Monday

Yes of course, with the proviso that I am visiting grandson tomorrow, and that grand-daughter's sibling was due today, so we are on Defcon 5 with the engine running! 🙂

Should be back in this thread in about 20 hours from now, subject to above. But don't wait for me - just carry on!

Weather worsens
T'storms and pouring rain. The dog from the farm next door came here - he's aftraid of thunder, his parents are away, his buddies are not afraid but aren't helping him.
We are currently dogsitting. I just came here on the MBP to let you know - I'll do all this tomorrow. Turning off and unplugging now.
One quickie ? -when I do the combo update - do I uninstall anything? of does it just write over all? Do I loose all my bookmarks in Safari? How do I keep a copy of them if that is the case?
