merging 2 volumes into 1

Ok now I am running out of space on my Mac OSX Volume but there is a Macintosh HD Volume.

The issue I'm running into is that when I went to the Disk Utility to try and remove the partition it tells me that the Mac OS X partition is the start up volume and it cannot be removed the Macintosh HD volume says that "This Volume will not be erased"

Just to make sure everyone understands. There is 2 separate volumes one name "Mac OSX" and one named "Macintosh HD"

So what do I do?

Ok I formatted one of my Portable HDs and set it up to do the backup. It is backing up now but it is really not showing that it is backing up both volumes (or is it?) Will it back up everything on the Macbook (that means both volumes) or just the OS X volume that has my bootable os on it.

All this is very confusing

Update: ok sorry it is backing up both it seems, just did the calculations for how much data is on here

Are you using a cloning utility to make the backup? If so, it is cloning one volume. The volume you want to clone is the one that has OS X on it. Then you want to drag-copy the contents of the other volume, which I assume contains only data files, not system files or applications.

I gave a detailed outline of the process above. Is there a particular part of it that's confusing you?
