How do I put a movie on my site with iWeb?

(This is reposted here at Alancito's suggestion. Are there some iWeb '08 tricks which will allow me to do this...?)
_______________

I'm trying to have a "before and after movie" on my site. (It's a simple graphic made with AppleWorks Draw, showing the mess before using our service ... and then the solution afterwards.)

I want visitors to my site to see the Before image for about 3 seconds, followed by the After image for another three seconds. And I want this to cycle this way continuously ... and automatically.

I'm using iWeb 1.1.2. (Oh! And the reason I use a Mac is I am averse to technical stuff; I just want it to WORK.)

Alancito helped me with this over at <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9513268#9513268>, but it seems I may need to upgrade to '08.

Yes? No? Other suggestions?

First you Contact info is covering the video caption in Safari but only half covering it in IE.
Is it a text on a shape or background color or what?
It needs to be moved down the page a bit.
Do a Command A in the iWeb page to see if there are any object/text box overlaps.
The movie seems to work OK in IE V 7.
If the original was in m4v format and you used the QT in an iFrame it should work OK.

If you go to this page...

http://roddymckay.com/VisualMedia/ConvertQuickTimetoFlash.html

... you'll see three links to examples.

What size is your movie file and what is the file format of the original?

Leo - Yes. You describe my need precisely. (I started out asking for help with a .gif ... the advice moved me to calling it a "movie". We went from .gif ... to QT ... to Flash.)

How do I make this a .gif? How do I put it in iWeb? Will it run automatically and loop as a .gif? (Sometimes "newer" isn't better. I'd be very happy with a .gif.)

Roddy - I see the overlap problem you describe. (Which is why I posted we had made "progress" ... not solved ... the issue.) Using the Vimeo flash box shows iWeb to not be WYSIWYG....

Command-A in iWeb shows NO overlap at all. But the Vimeo box is larger than the QT box was. It is about 15% higher than the QT box was ... and no wider. I am perplexed that I seem to need to "guess" to prevent the overlap problem.

As a QT movie it is 164KB and 353h x 303w. I don't see the size in the html snippet for the flash on Vimeo.

Hello Kaptain Karl,

I took the time to read your original post so I knew you made your images with AppleWorks Drawing.
Me to, I love AppleWorks and still use from time to time. However, it is replaced with iWork (I must say, a great improvement).

Back to your question :

In AppleWorks Drawing save the 2 drawings as JPG,
If you do not have some version of Photoshop, goto http://www.versiontracker.com and do a search for your OS version with "animated gif", you'll get several applications (freeware, shareware) that will do the trick. (yes, even the freeware apps work fine)

All these apps have an interface (some are more user friendly but have less options) that lets you set image 1, set wait time in seconds, set image 2, set wait time in seconds, and so on.

If the animated gif application you like does not support JPG import, you can convert the 2 JPG's to GIF via Preview (save as).

You can drag the animated gif file on any iWeb page.
It will work on any browser.

Kind regards,
Leo

I usually use lots of empty space around movies!

You say....
I am frustrated that so many "solutions" involve buying yet another application. Are there any people who do small -- really small -- projects like this as a service to those of us who'd rather not "build a watch when all we really want to know is the time?"

If you want to send me a ZIP of your movie file I will convert it to SWF to see if you like it.
Click my name in the sidebar to get my email.

I emailed you the movie and the code but it was rejected by your server. I split it up and sent the SWF separately and this was undelivered too.
You need to get more space or clean house!
The SWF has been set to loop, autoplay, no controller and with a pre loader. I have adjusted the iFrame size to fit the movie but you should change the background color in the code from black #000000 to white #FFFFFF just in case because your webpage background is white.

The test page with both versions - controls and no controls - is still up and I'll leave it for a while....

Hi Kaptain!

Well I guess we're not letting you give up, lol.

I have prepared an animated GIF for you using your images:
[Karl AnimatedGif|http://www.wdd3.info/Xper/GIFanim.html]

If you like it you can download it to your desktop and then insert it into your iWeb page. Make sure you select the QT Inspector (button) to set this GIF to autoplay, and turn the GIF's control bar display to off (it will loop by itself so you don't need to check that box).

The first image runs for 3 seconds, dissolves to the second image, 3 second hold - then loops back to the first.

The GIF may take a second or two to load on your page (file size 116K), then it holds the first image for 3 seconds, so it may take six or seven seconds for the first cycling to kick in.

Cyclosaurus - I don't understand what I should change in your Java script ... but thanks for offering it.

Jim - iWeb '08 won't allow me to use the Inspector to make the animation Auto or Loop or anything. (The controls are grayed-out; not active.) It seems QT is the only form of vid I can control that way ... and QT can't be seen by enough of my target market. A weird Catch-22.)

At least I have something which looks like a website now. That "Forbidden" message was really bad for business....

KK:

When you create the gif withGIFfun you're created an html file with code to loop thru the selected images. To use that you would have to save that html file and the files to the server and embed it into your iWeb page using iFrame code and an HTML snippet.

Another animated gif building application, GIFBuilder for OSX for Mac will create standalone animated gifs.

You can't use it with photos as gifs can only support 256 colors. The GIFfun method would work with photos.

Both application only have one transition, i.e. none.
